LPG subsidy to stay, leakages to be probed
He said the ministry's task was to address LPG leakages through misappropriation and smuggling.
'We remain committed to providing LPG cylinder subsidies to the public. Fundamentally, this subsidy is for consumer use, a subsidy for the people's kitchens,' he told Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong) who sought clarification on whether the government would withdraw the subsidy.
Although the subsidy is primarily for household consumers, Armizan said it also benefits micro and small businesses, particularly in the food and beverage sector.
'For this reason, the food and beverage sector must ensure that prices remain reasonable for the public,' he added.
He said that the legal aspects specifically concerning the use of LPG by small traders will be detailed in amendments to the Control of Supplies Regulations (Import Prohibition) 2021.
The Control of Supplies Regulations (Amendment) 2021 limits the ownership and use of subsidised LPG exceeding 42kg at any one time without a scheduled controlled goods permit.

Erasing record of non-violent or minor offences under study
AN amendment to expunge the record of individuals convicted of non-violent or minor offences after a reasonable period is being mulled, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the ministry is currently in the process of amending the Registration of Criminals and Undesirable Persons Act 1969 (Act 7). The Act serves as a legal authority to register individuals who have been convicted of offences listed in the First and Second Schedules of Act 7 in the criminal register. 'The proposed amendments have been agreed upon in principle by the Cabinet on May 21. 'Among them is the introduction of a 'spent' mechanism, allowing individuals who have not committed new offences within a reasonable period to be considered as having 'no record' in the criminal register,' he said. He was responding to a question by Wong Chen (PH-Subang) who had asked whether the government is considering erasing the records of those convicted for non-violent or minor offences. Saifuddin Nasution said the legal reform will provide a second chance to those previously convicted to enable them to pursue opportunities such as employment and further education.

1,815 cases probed under Peaceful Assembly Act
A TOTAL of 1,815 cases have been investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (Act 736) nationwide from 2012 to June 2025, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Of the total, 33 cases have been prosecuted in court, with nine convicted under the law. 'In line with the Federal Court's decision declaring Section 9(5) of this Act unconstitutional, the Home Ministry will review and reassess the Act before setting any new stance and direction. 'This will be done in line with democratic principles, respect for human rights, and the current needs of the country,' he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday to a question by Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi). Syahredzan had asked the ministry to state the total number of people investigated, charged and convicted under the Act and the government's stance following the recent court decision. Saifuddin Nasution said the ministry's position on this will be established after a review. He also said that the right to freedom of peaceful assembly guaranteed by the Federal Constitution will also be considered. Previously, it was reported that the Home Ministry will table amendments to Section 11 of the Act. He also said the Cabinet decided to impose a moratorium on prosecutions under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 as an initial step towards comprehensive reform of laws related to the right to assemble.

More Rahmah sales planned
PUTRAJAYA: Higher discounts for items sold at Rahmah sales (PJRM) are among the improvements being planned for the popular government-sponsored event, says Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali (pic). The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister said such sales will be held more frequently and expanded to more locations, while stocks of items will be increased. Armizan also said more retailers will be brought in as strategic partners, following the Prime Minister's announcement on Wednesday that the initiative will get RM300mil in additional funds. 'We are targeting 20,000 PJRM nationwide this year, covering all 222 parliamentary constituencies, 600 state constituencies and 40 zones in the Federal Territories. 'As of July 22, a total of 12,441 PJRM have been implemented nationwide,' he told reporters after inspecting a Rahmah sales event at the ministry yesterday, Bernama reported. Elaborating on the ministry's plans, Armizan said it will raise the minimum number of stock-keeping units per location to 30 from 20, based on local demand and seasonal needs, such as festive periods. He said more strategic retail partners will be engaged through Mobile, On-Premises and Off-Premises formats, and the sales schedules will be updated on the ministry's website. The ministry is also looking into increasing the quantum of discounts on items sold at these events to more than the current 10 to 30%. Armizan said the ministry will submit a report on this year's PJRM to the Finance Ministry in December to assess the programme's performance and impact on the public. He also thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the people-centric initiatives, which were announced on Wednesday. Anwar announced that the PJRM allocation would be doubled to RM600mil this year to increase its frequency, expand coverage across all 600 state constituencies and offer a wider range of goods.
