Domestic demand will remain key driver of Malaysia's economic growth: Amro

The Sun6 days ago
SINGAPORE: Malaysia's economy continues to demonstrate resilience in 2025, underpinned by strong domestic demand, robust investment activity and favourable labour market conditions, despite pressures from global trade tensions and policy uncertainty.
Asean+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (Amro) chief economist Dong He stated that if the United States' reciprocal tariffs take effect from Aug 1 at the current rate of 25%, Malaysia's gross domestic product growth could fall from 5.1% in 2024 to 4.2% in 2025, and further to 3.8% in 2026.
'This reflects the direct impact on Malaysia's exports to the US, the indirect effects through intermediate goods sent to other countries destined for the US, and the broader slowdown in global trade growth. Nonetheless, domestic demand will remain the key driver of growth,' he told Bernama.
He noted that front-loaded exports had supported economic momentum earlier in the year. At the same time, key sectors such as information and communication technology and manufacturing remain active, bolstered by data centre investments and industrial diversification.
However, the outlook for the second half of the year and beyond remains clouded by external headwinds, particularly the outcome of ongoing US trade negotiations.
To maintain momentum, He said Malaysia's policy priorities should include sustained diplomatic engagement with the US on trade issues, diversification of export markets, and greater emphasis on the services sector, which is typically less exposed to protectionist measures.
He added that accelerating structural reforms remains essential, especially through the implementation of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
'Regionally, the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) could emerge as a strategic advantage, catalysing cross-border investment and innovation.
'US tariffs could enhance the JS-SEZ's appeal, particularly if Singapore faces much lower tariffs than countries like Vietnam and Mexico,' He said.
He added that the strong commitment to collaboration demonstrated by both the Singaporean and Malaysian governments boosts confidence in the zone's prospects, particularly in a volatile global environment shaped by rising protectionism.
'Together, the zone's economic value proposition and political backing can attract foreign investors looking to establish a base in Asean,' He said.
He noted that for the JS-SEZ to succeed, several challenges must be tackled, including cross-border movement of people and goods, infrastructure in southern Johor, wage gaps, labour shortages, and policy continuity, among others.
'If successful, the JS-SEZ can serve as a blueprint for future regional integration initiatives. For example, it could inspire similar cross-border economic zones between Thailand and Laos or Vietnam and Cambodia,' he said. – Bernama

IMF Upgrades Global Growth Forecast In Latest Outlook

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- Global economic growth is projected to reach 3.0 per cent in 2025 and 3.1 per cent in 2026, above the reference forecast in the April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO), according to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) July 2025 WEO update, released today. Titled 'Global Economy: Tenuous Resilience amid Persistent Uncertainty', the IMF report stated that the 2025 forecast is 0.2 percentage points higher, and the 2026 projection is 0.1 percentage point higher than the April 2025 WEO reference forecast. 'This reflects stronger-than-expected front-loading in anticipation of higher tariffs; lower-than-announced average effective United States tariff rates; improved financial conditions driven in part by a weaker US dollar; and fiscal expansion in several major economies,' the report said. The IMF also projected that global headline inflation will decline to 4.2 per cent in 2025 and 3.6 per cent in 2026, following a trajectory broadly in line with the April forecast. 'The overall picture masks significant cross-country differences, with inflation expected to remain above target in the US and more subdued in other major economies. Risks to the outlook remain tilted to the downside, as noted in the April 2025 WEO,' the report added, warning that a rebound in effective tariff rates could dampen growth. According to the IMF, elevated uncertainty could start weighing more heavily on activity, as deadlines for additional tariffs expire without progress on substantial, permanent agreements. 'Geopolitical tensions could disrupt global supply chains and push commodity prices up. 'Meanwhile, larger fiscal deficits or increased risk aversion could raise long-term interest rates and tighten global financial conditions,' it said. Combined with fragmentation concerns, the IMF said this could reignite volatility in financial markets.

ASEAN as global peace model affirmed by Malaysia and Brunei

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Brunei have voiced strong confidence in ASEAN's ability to remain a leading example of diplomacy and global peace. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted this during a phone discussion with Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah following his arrival at the ASEAN Secretariat Building in Jakarta. 'We touched on ASEAN as well as talking about efforts to reconcile Thailand and Cambodia, which agreed to unconditionally stop all forms of violence yesterday. 'God willing, we are confident that ASEAN will continue to be a model region in promoting diplomacy and global peace,' Anwar shared in a Facebook post. The breakthrough follows a special ASEAN meeting chaired by Anwar in Putrajaya, where Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to de-escalate border tensions. The meeting saw the participation of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. Key international stakeholders, including US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador Ouyang Yujing, also attended. The US co-organised the session, while China observed in support of a peaceful resolution. The longstanding border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia spans 817 kilometres, with tensions escalating since late May after clashes near Preah Vihear claimed a Cambodian soldier's life. Renewed skirmishes on July 24 further strained relations before the ceasefire agreement. Anwar later proceeded to Jakarta for the 13th Annual Consultation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. – Bernama
