Gaza Faces Imminent Crisis in Medical Laboratory, Blood Bank Services
Dr. Sahar Ghanem, Director of the Laboratory Department at the Ministry, said nearly half of the medical testing materials and lab consumables have stock levels that will not last more than a month.
Specifically, 48.7% of diagnostic reagents and 48.2% of laboratory consumables are running dangerously low.
'This sharp deterioration directly threatens the continuity of diagnostic and blood transfusion services,' Dr. Ghanem said.
'It comes at a time when the health sector is already overwhelmed by soaring numbers of injuries and an escalating humanitarian crisis.'
The crisis is further compounded by the targeted destruction of laboratory equipment by Israeli forces during ongoing military operations.
According to Dr. Ghanem, approximately 50% of hospital laboratories and 60% of primary care laboratories have been destroyed. In total, 514 laboratory devices are currently out of service.
Before the war started on October 7, 2023, 12 laboratories operated in hospitals across Gaza under the Ministry of Health. Six of these labs were completely destroyed, while two others, located in the European Gaza Hospital and Al-Durra Hospital, were forced to shut down due to evacuations.
Only four labs remain operational, scattered between the northern and southern parts of the Gaza Strip.
Dr. Ghanem accused the Israeli army of systematically targeting laboratory facilities to cripple the health sector and prevent timely diagnosis and treatment of patients and the wounded.
In response to the crisis, the Gaza Ministry of Health is urgently calling on international and humanitarian organizations to intervene.
They stress the need for immediate support to sustain the minimum level of medical services necessary to care for the wounded and sick in the besieged enclave.
Without swift international action, Gaza's already fragile healthcare infrastructure may soon face total collapse, the Ministry revealed.

Israel's War of Starvation Ravages Gaza's Children
DaysofPal – Starvation is tightening its grip on the Gaza Strip, where children are dying by the hour under an Israeli blockade that has turned hunger into a weapon of war. Medical sources and humanitarian organizations are warning that the famine in Gaza is no longer looming; it is here, unfolding in real time, as the international community fails to intervene meaningfully. The Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Yunis confirmed the death of two-year-old Abdul Aal, from severe malnutrition. At the time of his death, he weighed just 8 kilograms, far below the average weight for a child his age. Doctors described his condition as emblematic of the catastrophe sweeping the besieged territory. In the past 24 hours alone, Gaza's Ministry of Health reported two additional deaths due to starvation, raising the official toll to 159 victims, including 90 children. Health officials say this figure is rising daily as food supplies run out and humanitarian aid remains blocked. Another young man, 27-year-old Adel Madi from Rafah, also succumbed to hunger, the Nasser Medical Complex reported. In central Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp, medical staff at Al-Awda Hospital confirmed the death of Karam Al-Jamal due to prolonged starvation. The deaths are not isolated. Gaza's Ministry of Health director, Dr. Munir al-Barsh, stated that 1,300 people have been killed while attempting to reach aid distribution points, places he described as 'death traps' where the starving are met with Israeli gunfire. 'These are not accidents,' he said. 'These are deliberate killings of people whose only crime is hunger.' The crisis is now so severe that the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has issued urgent warnings, saying that 'with every hour that passes, more children are dying in Gaza.' UNICEF confirmed that tons of life-saving food and medical supplies remain stuck at Israeli border crossings, unable to reach the people who need them most. David Miliband, president of the International Rescue Committee, echoed the alarm, stating bluntly, 'People in Gaza are dying of hunger.' He revealed that despite having nutrition kits and emergency medical supplies ready, none were permitted entry into Gaza throughout April and May. 'It's not a shortage of aid,' Miliband said. 'It's a blockade.' While aid convoys wait at the border and food rots in trucks, Gaza's population is being decimated by preventable starvation. Famine has taken hold not as a consequence of natural disaster, but as the direct result of Israeli genocidal policy, one that human rights groups say is using hunger as a tool of collective punishment. Despite growing international outrage, including calls from humanitarian agencies to lift the siege and allow unrestricted aid access, Israel continues to impose suffocating restrictions on food, fuel, and medicine. The Israeli offensive and bombardment compound the crisis, leaving families with no safe shelter, no clean water, and no access to healthcare. Shortlink for this post:

HRW: Gaza Aid Distribution System Turned Into 'Regular Bloodbaths'
DaysofPal- Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a damning report condemning the Israeli handling of humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza, calling it a 'regular bloodbath' that constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity. HRW described the Israeli- and US-backed system for distributing aid in Gaza as a deeply flawed military mechanism that is actively endangering civilians rather than helping them. According to the report, the worsening famine in Gaza is entirely man-made and being used deliberately by Israeli forces as a weapon of war. 'The humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza is not an unfortunate byproduct of conflict, but the result of a calculated policy to starve civilians,' HRW stated. It emphasized that Israel's ongoing prevention of aid access constitutes both genocide and a crime against humanity. The report added that Israeli forces have turned food distribution points into zones of death, where desperate civilians, particularly children, widows, and the sick, are routinely targeted. Aid convoys and medical staff attempting to distribute food or deliver supplies to UN warehouses are also reportedly coming under fire, exacerbating chaos and hunger. In a joint call for action, HRW demanded that Israel immediately lift all unlawful restrictions on aid and urged both Israel and the United States to suspend the current aid distribution system, which has proven both ineffective and deadly. Moreover, it called on the international community to apply urgent pressure to open all crossings and facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian supplies by land, the only method deemed 'effective, safe, and fast' by UN agencies. Dr. Bassam Zakout, Director of the Medical Relief Society in Gaza, described the situation as beyond catastrophic, citing severe shortages in food, medical supplies, and infant formula. Zakout reported a sharp rise in malnutrition among children and teens, with many mothers forced to replace milk with water for their babies, noting that hospitals, overwhelmed and under-resourced, are receiving daily casualties from attacks near aid centers, underscoring the deadly nature of the current system. Zakout warned that time is rapidly running out for any effective humanitarian response, and that Gaza is already facing a real threat of mass starvation. According to the World Food Program, one in every three people in Gaza now goes entire days without food, while 75% of the population faces emergency levels of hunger. The UN's global food security monitor (IPC) confirmed that the worst-case famine scenario is already unfolding, warning that air-dropped aid is wholly inadequate to stop the collapse. Since March 2, Israel has shut all border crossings, abandoning its obligations under the January 18 ceasefire agreement, which promised the daily entry of 600 aid trucks and 50 fuel tankers. As a result, the enclave has run out of stored food, medicine, dairy products, vegetables, meat, and hygiene supplies, leaving the population of 2.3 million on the brink of starvation. The report concluded with an urgent appeal: open the crossings, end the blockade, and allow UN agencies to operate freely before Gaza is lost to a preventable humanitarian catastrophe. Israel Forcibly Disappearing Gaza Medical Official Dr. Marwan Al-Hams
DayofPal– The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza has raised serious concerns over the fate of Dr. Marwan Al-Hems, head of Gaza's field hospitals, who was abducted by Israeli forces ten days ago. The Ministry reports no information has been provided regarding his health condition or the circumstances of his detention, amid credible reports of abuse and mistreatment. In an official statement released Thursday, the Ministry accused Israeli authorities of engaging in the systematic forced disappearance of Palestinian medical personnel, noting that 361 medical staff members are currently held in Israeli prisons. It cited testimonies from released detainees and legal representatives detailing widespread abuse and harsh detention conditions. The Ministry urged international legal and humanitarian organizations to exert maximum pressure on Israel to secure the immediate release of all detained healthcare workers, stressing the violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions which protect medical staff during wars. On July 22, Alaa Skaafi, Director of Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights in Gaza, confirmed that Dr. Al-Hams is being held in Ashkelon Prison after sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg during his arrest. Skaafi said the physician has been denied access to legal counsel and that Israeli authorities have extended his detention without charge until July 31, 2025, a move described as a blatant violation of his legal and human rights. Dr. Al-Hams was detained on Monday, July 21, near the Red Cross Field Hospital in western Khan Younis, southern Gaza. According to Gaza's Health Ministry Director-General Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, the abduction constitutes yet another attack on Gaza's medical community, which has faced increasing targeting since the start of the war. Family sources reported that Dr. Al-Hems was taken by an Israeli special forces unit, and that the driver of their ambulance was also wounded during the operation. Local witnesses say Israeli forces opened fire on a group of civilians near a café opposite the Red Cross Field Hospital in western Rafah, escalating concerns over the increasing militarization of medical zones in Gaza. Human rights groups and local officials continue to call on the international community to act urgently to ensure protection for medical staff in conflict zones and demand accountability for violations of international law.
