Even before we meet the man who plays Detective Sherdil, in this year's 786th whodunit, a word I shall be using 786 times more before the year ends, we are told how this man played by Diljit Dosanjh was named Sherdil. It's understandable the makers want to combine crime and comedy and dumb the story down. The thought of the memories of Dosanjh's Arjun Patiala coming back send a shiver down your spine. But to give credit, at least the aesthetics are in place as we are right away taken to Budapest where a billionaire Boman Irani is murdered on an empty street. What it also gets right is a solid introductory shot of Ratna Pathak Shah, who plays Irani's wife. If Maya Sarabhai from Sarabhai vs Sarabhai had more attitude and authority, it could be this character. 'A true boss lady' is how Diana Penty describes her.

Some cringe and coincidental moments follow soon as Banita Sandhu of October fame shows up as a deaf and mute daughter of the couple who's called, errr Shanti. There's the severely underinvested Mukesh Bhat (the inimitable actor of Rocket Singh and Gulaal), the driver who's absconding since his master was brutally assassinated (Prem Ratan Dhan Payo anyone?). When all the crucial pieces of the puzzle are laid together, the eponymous character declares in his twang 'This is a classic…. Whodunit.' Okay then! But this very character never allows the film to be edge-of-the-seat as he keeps playing his harmonica and its perpetual tune hams its way to the background score that swells to a crescendo on multiple occasions. Let there be silence for some time dude.
If this blend of two contrasting genres is unable to keep the curiosity alive despite some spurts of engagement, Chunky Panday's typically filmy entry does perk up the proceedings from A to B. Had he smiled a little more, he could very well be the spiritual version of Aakhri Pasta called Aakhri Aastha as he did in Housefull 3.
Bollywood doesn't do comical thrillers well as it gets too confused which box to tick first- To add murder mystery in a comedy or comedy in a murder mystery. That's why the jokes and the jolts both feel ill-timed and misplaced. And that pretentious The End deceit that ruined Neeraj Pandey's forgettable Sikandar Ka Muqaddar last year returns here too.
But the ensemble is too contagious- Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah, Sumeet Vyas, Banita Sandhu, and Diana Penty. The outfits that Irani flaunts are absolutely striking. He looks dapper and the effective baritone adds to his intimidating personality that's all worn out and vulnerable inside. Penty brings a certain sense of gravitas to her performance with her no-nonsense attitude. She has been immensely selective about her choices of films after the impressive debut in Cocktail back in 2012. But that also shows how her repertoire is a cocktail of different genres, ranging from comedy to drama to now a whodunnit.

Sandhu added immense gravitas to her vegetative state in the meditative and heartfelt October. Here too, she's handicapped by a disability but makes terrific use of it. And the refined Shah is always a delight to watch. She has a remarkably impressive command over her body language. And once again after Kapoor & Sons, she's trapped in a crumbling marriage that ends with a surprising death.
The story is written by Ali Abbas Zafar along with Sagar Bajaj and Ravi Chhabriya who also directs the film. Post Sultan, Zafar has largely been out of depth except for Jogi, also starring Diljit Dosanjh. It's understandable the two wanted to have fun after an exhausting and emotionally charged collaboration, but the bullet misses the plate. That's not to say it's a washout. Not at all. Whodunnits always turn out to be guilty pleasures.
And unlike Housefull 5 (A and B) and 36 China Town, the final twist doesn't feel frivolous. It not only compliments the essence of the story but also exposes the fragility of dysfunctional relationships and dying emotional dynamics. It also makes up for the lost time of an ensemble of solid actors that needs to be seen more often in movies that judiciously explore its tenacity and talent. But without the harmonica next time please!

'Sitaare Zameen Par' box office opening day analysis: The Aamir Khan starrer expected to open at Rs 7-8 crore; will it affect 'Housefull 5'? Trade experts discuss

Aamir Khan 's 'Sitaare Zameen Par' has now released in theatres and while the trailer got a decent response, it's the positive word of mouth that shall play a huge role in the film's box office fate. While one may usually expect a big Aamir Khan starrer to open with big numbers, this one is slightly different. It's made for a different audience and will grow eventually if the public reviews are good. As per the advance booking report of the film till Thursday night, the movie had sold about 81931 tickets and collected Rs 2.5 crore in the advance bookings, according to Sacnilk. Talking about the expectations from the film on day 1, trade expert Taran Adarsh told ETimes, "I think the start is not going to be like the typical Aamir Khan starrer that we used to see in the past. I think the film will start slow, but will depend on the word of mouth. The start may be in single digits and if the word of mouth is very good, then I think it should cross the double digits on day one, but as of now, it's looking like a single digit opening." He added, "This is a word of mouth film. This is not a Dhoom or 'Ghajini' that will open with a bang. Now, as I said, it all depends on the public reports. I think Rs 7.5 to 8 crore is what we are looking at." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo Film trade expert Girish Wankhede said, "'Sitaara Zameen Par' doesn't look like a massive film. It looks typical, classy, elite film for the high-end, multiplex cutout. So, the way regular Aamir Khan films like PK, Dangal, performs, this one won't do that way. Secondly, it is not a huge release. Instead of marketing, they are more invested in showcasing the characters with various has not touched the masses. Third thing is, there are no great songs. So, my expectation of the very first day is around 7 to 8 crores, which is very less compared to all the Aamir Khan releases. If the word of mouth is stronger, then it can just go out of the roof on Friday and Sunday." Talking about the weekend numbers expected, in case the word of mouth is good, Wankhede adds, "At this moment, I can say that this film would not do more than 30-35 crores in the weekend, which is not a great number." Lesser screens for ' Housefull 5 ' At the moment, 'Housefull 5' starring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh , Abhishek Bachchan among others is dominating at the box office. It collected Rs 2.75 crore on Thursday which was day 14. The second week collection of the movie is now Rs 40 crore. The total collection of the movie so far is Rs 168 crore. But with the release of 'Sitaare Zameen Par', the number of screens for 'Housefull 5' will reduce. Taran Adarsh says, "Yes, that is going to be less. But in single screens, I think this film Housefull 5 will still be there. But major shows in multiplexes will be 'Sitaare Zameen Par'." However, Wankhede feels that since the genres of both are different, it won't get affected. "Moreover, 'Housefull 5' is already beginning to steam out," he said. If 'Sitaare Zameen Par' gets positive word of mouth, the film will have the entire week to find a place for itself at the box office. On June 27, Kajol starrer mythological thriller 'Maa' releases on screen which will give competition to 'Sitaare Zameen Par'.

Box office grows 27% in 2025, but Bollywood remains worried

Film producers and distributors are not enthused with the 27% year-on-year growth in all-India box office collection in the first five months of 2025, saying the growth does not capture the "existential" challenges that have engulfed the industry. These challenges have, consequently, created an acute sense of "nervousness" among all key stakeholders in the film industry, they said. The all-India box office collection rose to ₹4,812 crore between January and May this year from ₹3,791 crore in the year-ago period, according to the May box office report by media and entertainment research firm Ormax Media. "Are we looking at numbers or real growth? Last year was an election year. So, it seems there is growth in collection. There is a huge difference between film business in multiplexes and the B-class and C-class centres," said Yusuf Shaikh, CEO and founder, Janta Cinema, an exhibitor that showcases films at affordable prices. Shaikh said there are two critical challenges in the Hindi film industry . "We have lost 20-25% of the elite audience in theatres in the past few years. Even cheap ticket prices have not brought this audience to theatres," he said. Another major concern, said Shaikh, is the glaring absence of well-made mass entertainers. "It is an irony. Elite audiences are absent in theatres. The masses who come to theatres do not have credible mass entertainers to watch," he said. Most industry veterans believe that, incrementally, a sense of apathy is growing among audiences about watching Hindi films in theatres. "Today, the audience for whom watching films in theatres was a ritual is missing. This has impacted the average opening and collection of Hindi films," said a film distributor, who requested anonymity. "Consequently, today, the mass audience is watching regional or non-Hindi films in theatres." According to Ormax Media, the contribution of non-Hindi films-including English and other language films-to the all-India box office collection in the first five months of 2025 was a huge 63%, indicating an increasing acceptance of non-Hindi content by audiences in the Hindi belt. In the same period last year, the contribution of non-Hindi content to the all-India collection was 67%. This is because the share of collection of Hindi films to all-India collection grew to 37% in January-May 2025 from 33% in January-May 2024. Chhaava and Raid 2 were two noteworthy hits that contributed to this growth. "One or two hits do not promise change in the business situation. The Hindi film industry is disproportionately dependent on big-budget films. Today, the industry needs more successful mid-budget films ," said Prashen Kyawal, a creative, post-producer and media-tech consultant. Producer Rajesh R Nair concurs. "Instead of a big-budget film, we need a few mid-budget films, which have fresh stories and talent. The Hindi film industry must reinvent. Time has come to back fresh stories and new talent," he said.
