YouTube now the second most-watched media service in the UK

Overall, people spent an average of four hours and 30 minutes a day watching TV and video content at home in 2024, with broadcast TV still making up 56% of in-home viewing, the regulator said.
However, YouTube is 'leading the charge' in the streaming takeover of TV sets, with the service now the first place younger viewers go as soon as they switch on.

At home, people spent 39 minutes a day on YouTube in 2024, with 16 minutes of this on the household's TV set.
Younger adults aged 16 to 34 are driving the trend, watching 18 minutes of YouTube a day on TV, while one in five children aged four to 15 (20%) head straight to the app as soon as they turn the set on.
Even those aged over 55 have almost doubled the time they spend watching YouTube on their TVs compared with the previous year – up from six minutes a day in January 2023 to 11 minutes in December.
YouTube's soaring popularity comes as the platform's content has evolved, with half of its top-trending videos now more closely resembling traditional TV, including long-form interviews and game shows, Ofcom said.
On average, people spent 4% less time watching broadcast TV on TV sets than in 2023, with their average viewing dropping to two hours and 24 minutes a day, according to the report.
Just as in 2023, a decline was seen across all age groups except adults aged 75 and over.
Ed Leighton, Ofcom's interim group director for strategy and research, said: 'Scheduled TV is increasingly alien to younger viewers, with YouTube the first port of call for many when they pick up the TV remote.
'But we're also seeing signs that older adults are turning to the platform as part of their daily media diet too.
'Public service broadcasters are recognising this shift – moving to meet audiences in the online spaces where they increasingly spend their time. But we need to see even more ambition in this respect to ensure that public service media that audiences value survives long into the future.'
Gavin & Stacey, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Mr Bates vs The Post Office were the most-watched TV programmes and films of 2024.
Gavin & Stacey: The Finale was the most-watched programme of the year, averaging 18.6 million viewers across BBC One and BBC iPlayer on TV sets.

'Haunted' Annabelle doll gets new celebrity owner after handler dies

Comedian Matt Rife has revealed his 'super random' purchase of the museum that houses the 'haunted' Annabelle doll. The Raggedy Ann doll was obtained by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, in the 1970s after its original owner claimed it exhibited unsettling behaviour and was told by a psychic it had been possessed by a dead girl called Annabelle. Over the years was claimed to have caused a string of supernatural occurrences, featuring the 2013 film The Conjuring, going on to inspire the Annabelle horror film series – which includes the 2014 film Annabelle, followed by Annabelle: Creation (2017), and Annabelle Comes Home (2019). Over the past five decades, the original doll has been kept in the Warren's Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut. Last month the doll came to attention again following the sudden and mysterious death of its caretaker Dan Rivera. The well-known ghost hunter, 54, had been taking the doll around the US when he was found dead in his hotel. An autopsy is yet to confirm his cause of death, but police said 'nothing unusual or suspicious was observed at the scene.' A few weeks on Rife, 29, has now announced he's 'officially' purchased the Warren's house and museum alongside YouTube creator Elton Castee. 'INSANE ANNOUNCEMENT,' he began. 'I have officially purchased Ed and Lorraine Warren's home and Occult Museum, including being the legal guardian for at least the next 5 years, of the entire haunted collection including THE ANNABELLE DOLL, with my good friend @eltoncastee!! If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with the paranormal and all things haunted. You also may know The Conjuring films are my favourite scary movies of all time. So I'm incredibly honoured to have taken over one of the most prominent properties in paranormal history. Ed and Lorain Warren arguably put demonology and paranormal into the mainstream and are the very heart of some of the most famous haunted stories of all time, The Conjuring House, Amityville Horror, etc… 'We plan to open the house for overnight stays and museum tours so you yourself can experience and learn all the haunted history surrounding this amazing place.' In a TikTok Rife, best known for his self-produced comedy specials Only Fans, Matthew Steven Rife and Walking Red Flag, as well as Netflix specials Natural Selection and Lucid, added that: 'I know a lot of you guys don't know [what] any of this means whatsoever, but if you follow ghost stuff, this is about as big as it gets.' The New England Society for Psychic Research, which was founded by the Warrens, previously described it as 'demonically possessed'. Despite Rife's excitement, many people expressed concerns for him. 'It was nice knowing you!!!!!!' Jake commented on Instagram. 'DONT TOUCH ANYTHING!! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT TOUCH ANYTHING!!' Heather urged. The original Annabelle doll is a Raggedy Ann-style cloth doll that became the subject of widespread attention due to its alleged involvement in paranormal events investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren, prominent figures in American demonology and paranormal research. The events began in 1970, when a nursing student named Donna received the doll as a gift from her mother. Shortly after, Donna and her roommate Angie reported unusual activity involving the doll, including changes in its position and location within their apartment. They also discovered handwritten notes on parchment paper with disturbing messages such as 'Help me,' despite not having such paper in the apartment. Seeking an explanation, the women consulted a medium who claimed that the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a deceased girl named Annabelle Higgins. However, the Warrens, upon investigating, concluded that the presence associated with the doll was not that of a human spirit but a malevolent, demonic entity using the doll as a conduit to ultimately possess a human host. Following their investigation, the Warrens removed the doll and placed it in a secure glass case in their Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut, with a warning label reading, 'Warning: Positively Do Not Open.' The doll is also associated with a supposed curse. The Warrens recounted an incident in which a museum visitor mocked the doll and challenged its power. According to their account, the visitor died in a motorcycle accident shortly after being asked to leave the museum. This story has contributed to the belief that Annabelle carries a dangerous curse, although no verifiable evidence supports these claims. 'No way. We are not ready to lose you,' Mel added. Rife went on to explain that he and Castee are now the 'legal guardians and caretakers' of the Warrens' home, as well as the museum and its collection of 750 artifacts, but don't have permanent ownership. 'I must go on record and say we do not legally own the items, but we are the legal guardians and caretakers of the items for at least the next five years,' he clarified. He also shared his plans to re-open the museum, which was forced to shut in 2019 due to a zoning violation. Rife said that 'soon' the museum will be opened for tours, while the house would be open for guests, with options to visit for a day, night or entire weekend. More Trending 'This is the most random hobby ever, but it's so f***ing ool, man. I should probably collect stamps or something — might be a little safer,' he joked. Ed Warren died aged 79 in 2006, while Lorraine died aged 92 in 2019. They were played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring franchise. Got a story? The actor announced that one of the drivers who worked on the sitcom's finale, which aired back in December, had died recently. Although having worked as a driver on the BBC show, he's known as a DJ, producer and club promoter in Wales, and has been the subject of tributes. ‌ It's yet to be announced how Rob, also known as Joe Blow, died. Last month, he posted about his health on social media, telling fans that he had been experiencing esophagitis, which involves the inflammation of the esophagus, and had been sent home from work previously due to chest pains. He wrote on July 17: "To everyone who has been trying to get hold of me, I will be back in touch, I'm not ignoring you. Got sent home from work a few days ago with chest pains and been wiped out ever since with Esophagitis." ‌ Rob shared that he would have to miss some events as a result. He also said: "Its sucks not being able to swallow food or drink without being in excruciating pain, as anyone who knows me knows its my favourite thing to do." Over a week later though, Rob appeared to be back at work. He posted about at a rave event in Cardiff that he is understood to have organised and thanked fans for their support. ‌ Gavin and Stacey star Mathew paid tribute to his late former colleague at a talk in Taunton earlier this week. The actor took part in an In Conversation event at Taunton Brewhouse in Somerset on Thursday. As reported by the Sun, he apologised to the audience at one point, saying that he had been "distracted" after hearing about his colleague's death. He said: "Earlier on ... we had a driver on the finale called Rob and he was in his early 40s... and I found out via the WhatsApp group earlier that he has passed away and I got slightly distracted there." Mathew described the news as "really sad" and reiterated that he had got distracted over the loss. He added: "He was a really lovely guy and he's left a four-year-old behind and that is really, really, really sad." There have been tributes to Rob this week, including on BBC Introducing with Adam Walton. Adam Walton said that he had the "privilege" of playing Rob's music, including as a member of groups, on the BBC Radio show for more than 25 years. He further paid tribute and expressed his condolences to those who knew Rob. Adam said at one point: "Rob was a great and prolific emcee, and his loss is seismic for his friends and collaborators and obviously for his family and community."

The pair found themselves in the bottom two with Ty and Angel after getting the fewest votes from the public - who had been voting for who they think is most compatible. Maya revealed one couple would be dumped from the island and the decision was in the hand of some familiar faces. One by one the ex-Islanders had their say, leaving the couples at risk less than impressed by their comments. After much back and forth, Meg and Dejon received 10 votes, while Angel and Ty received 8 votes. Love Island's final four are - Angel and Ty, Cach and Toni, Harry and Shakira, and Jamie and Yas. The news sent shockwaves throughout the villa, but not so much with those watching at home who have spent days campaigning for their exit. Meg and Dejon partnered up right at the start of the series and have since progressed to boyfriend and girlfriend status - but it has been fair from smooth sailing. And their relationship has faced scrutiny, with many viewers and even some fellow Islanders accusing Dejon of "game playing." Dumped Islanders have also weighed in, with some branding their romance as "staged" and expressing doubt about the authenticity of Dejon's feelings - after repeatedly insisting he was 'open'. Watch moment Love Island stars left in shock as Maya Jama enters the villa with bombshell news just days before final He certainly tested out his connections with almost all the bombshells that entered - but always ended up back with Meg. Things turned more toxic than ever when Blu told Dejon that Meg was seen as a "mean girl" by the public - and fans claimed they had "worked out" why he had seemingly turned on her. Furious fans have accused Dejon of gaslighting Meg as they approach the villa final. This led show fans to threaten to call broadcasting regulator Ofcom. The nail in the coffin for the pair was their final date, which they spent arguing, which led to Dejon suggesting they sit in silence but with their arms around each other so they looked good on camera.
