Auto fare hike comes into effect, leaves Bengaluru commuters fuming over steep increase in app-based aggregator prices

The Hindu6 days ago
As the revised autorickshaw fare came into effect on Friday, commuters in Bengaluru said that fares on aggregator platforms had seen a sharp increase, with many claiming they are now being charged well beyond the government-approved minimum fare.
According to the new fare structure notified by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of Bengaluru Urban district, the minimum auto fare has been increased from ₹30 to ₹36 for the first two km, with the per-kilometre charge beyond that raised from ₹15 to ₹18. These new rates were notified on July 14 and came into force on August 1.
However, many daily commuters are reporting that app-based aggregators have hiked their prices by 30 to 40%, far exceeding the government-approved revisions. Many of them also complained about the lack of transparency in how these fares are calculated.
Meenakshi S., a resident of Banashankari, said she frequently uses app-based autorickshaws for her daily commute to Infantry Road. 'Earlier, the ride used to cost me under ₹170. Today, I paid ₹230 for the same distance. That's an increase of over 35%. There is no clarity on how the fare is calculated, and the app doesn't show the minimum fare, distance fare, or any extra charges. It just displays the sum amount,' she said.
She further alleged that the aggregators are violating government norms. 'It is unacceptable that these platforms are charging such exorbitant rates without a proper fare breakdown. The government must intervene and ensure that aggregators provide transparent fare details. We can't afford to be held hostage to these apps just because regular autorickshaws refuse to run on the meter,' she added.
Passengers said the absence of a fare breakup not only creates room for overcharging, but also erodes trust in these platforms.
Sangeetha R., a resident of Kamanahalli, said, 'I booked a short ride on Friday and was charged ₹97. There was no explanation nor was there a mention of convenience fees, pick-up charges, surge pricing, or anything else. It's frustrating to not know what exactly we're paying for,' she said.
Apart from fare revisions for day-time travel, the new structure also introduces a 50% night fare surcharge for rides between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Additionally, passengers can carry up to 20 kg of luggage free of cost, but beyond that, a charge of ₹10 will apply for every 20 kg or part thereof, up to a maximum limit of 50 kg. For waiting time, the first five minutes are exempt from charges, after which ₹10 will be levied for every 15 minutes.
Despite repeated attempts, The Hindu did not receive any response from all the aggregator platforms at the time of publication.
A Transport Department official said that as per regulations, app-based auto aggregators are permitted to charge only 10% above the government-notified fare, along with an additional 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST). 'We will take strict action against any auto drivers, owners, or aggregator platforms found violating these rules,' the official warned.

PCB's acute financial crunch may hit salaries, services may falter

graphic with pix by Godse Pune: A critical financial situation is looming large for Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) that could prevent it from paying employees' salaries in Sept if they do not receive the 'grant-in-aid' from the Ministry of Defence. Each month, the cantonment requires between Rs 7 crore and Rs 7.15 crore to manage its operations. Of this amount, Rs 4 crore is allocated for the salaries of permanent employees, Rs 1.5 crore for contractual staff, Rs 1.25 crore for pensions, and Rs 1 crore for essential expenses such as water and electricity. But we have yet to get the aid, and hence, a section of employees is worried about future salaries." PCB's chief executive officer Vidyadhar Pawar, who took charge of the cantonment last week, told TOI, "I will not comment on the matter at this juncture." The board's poor financial condition has severely impacted civic services over the past four years. They have been unable to maintain public gardens, repair roadside electric lines, fix and resurface roads, or replace old drinking water and sewage pipelines. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Gorgeous Female Athletes Ranked-But Did We Get It Right? From about 12,500 properties, the board gets about Rs 30 crore revenue annually," a senior PCB official said. The board resorted to public-private partnerships (PPP) to manage hospital services and address their problems. Meanwhile, activists are blaming senior PCB officials for the lack of vision. "The board's CEOs should have found ways to overcome financial issues. We did not see a conscious effort on this front from CEOs since 2016. Hence, the board is in this situation," Sanjay Kawade, an activist from Ghorpadi, said. Rajabhau Chavan, another activist, said, "The only way forward is to merge civilian pockets of the cantonment with PMC at the earliest. The board has been in a poor financial state since 2016 and there is no indication that it will improve. The officials should complete the merger at the earliest." What Stood Still for Nine Years? Representational Image A little research before buying any product is done by all on Google or Youtube. But this managed to purchase a MacBook cheaper than in India and enjoyed an 11-day international trip along with it. How Man Saved Rs 36000 On MacBook? On social media platform Reddit, a user shared how he boarded a flight just to get a better deal on a laptop. He traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam, and bought a MacBook and saved Rs 36,500 in the process. He narrated his whole experience on Reddit and explained how the savings from the laptop covered an 11-day trip to Hanoi. What Made This Deal Possible? The price of the MacBook was lower in Vietnam compared to India. He benefited from a tax refund and favorable exchange rates. As a bonus, he also enjoyed a vacation. His story has inspired others to consider if they can do something similar. Why Are Apple Products Cheaper in Vietnam? One major reason Apple products are more expensive in India is the high import duties, along with GST. These taxes increase the cost of devices like the iPhone and MacBook. Whereas Vietnam has lower import duties on electronics. Also, the government allows tourists to claim back VAT (Value Added Tax) so it becomes an ideal destination for tech-savvy travelers who want to shop and explore. How He Saved Thousands? The Reddit user explained that the MacBook model was priced at Rs 1.85 lakh in India, In Vietnam it cost only Rs 1.48 lakh. Even with credit card offers in India, the price was high. He chose a store in Vietnam that could provide documents for VAT refunds. Before boarding his return flight, he completed the VAT refund process at the airport, which was showing the laptop and submitting paperwork. Once the refund was processed, the effective price of the MacBook went down even further. How He Did Trip To Vietnam For Rs 48000? The total cost of his trip came to Rs 2.08 lakh, which included flight tickets, accommodation, food, local transport, and the MacBook. After receiving the VAT refund, his overall expense declined to Rs 1.97 lakh. Deducting the MacBook cost (Rs 1.48 lakh), his vacation expenses came to just Rs 48,000 for which he spent 11 days in Hanoi. He managed to work and explore the city during this time. He Worked Remotely. The Reddit user also mentioned that he worked remotely during his trip, allowing him to continue earning while enjoying his vacation.
