Curbs on movement of heavy vehicles hit CNG supply to fuel outlets
Official sources in the oil industry said that they were unable to supply around 45,000 kg of the 2.20 lakh kg of fuel delivered to 65,000 CNG vehicles (45,000 being autorickshaws) due to the restrictions.
Since most times CNG vehicles get to fill their tanks only at night, they are the most affected.
Karthick, an autorickshaw driver said that waiting for CNG was bothersome, but having to go from bunk to bunk was worse. 'We wait for CNG only because the fuel gives better mileage,' he added.
'This has led to long queues, particularly of autorickshaws, at bunks with CNG. At times, some bunks even run out of the fuel, which is sent from Vallur in 150 trucks. Also, since each truck takes about two hours to decant the fuel, we need to spend more time in the city,' a dealer said.
Sources in the dealer network said they also faced problems when it came to obtaining petrol and diesel. 'There are delays in the trucks reaching the outlets. The restrictions have been put in place, keeping in mind the safety of the public. However, these are essential goods, and when retail outlets go dry, it inconveniences the same public. We have urged the State-run oil marketing companies to take up the issue with the police,' a dealer said.
Meanwhile, another source said that as far as CNG was concerned, the issue had been raised with the police and various government officials, and hopefully, the problem would be resolved. They would also take up the issue of petrol and diesel trucks with the authorities concerned.

CM Adityanath inaugurates Torrent Group's green hydrogen plant in UP
Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group's green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh was on Sunday inaugurated by state chief minister Yogi Adityanath. The project, jointly developed by Torrent Group entities Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, will have an annual production capacity of 72,000 tonnes per annum, the group said in a statement. "The Green Hydrogen produced at the plant will be blended with natural gas in Torrent Gas' City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, maintaining its concentration up to 2 per cent," it said. The green hydrogen blended with natural gas will be further supplied to domestic households, CNG stations and industries in the region through the already laid network of natural gas pipelines. "Torrent's green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur is the first Green Hydrogen plant in Uttar Pradesh and is also the largest Green Hydrogen and Natural Gas blending project in the City Gas Distribution sector in the country," the statement said. Torrent Gas has licence to provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar and Kushinagar districts. Torrent has already set up 32 CNG stations and supplies gas to 12,000+ domestic households and 73 industries and commercial establishments in the region and intends to grow its gas distribution infrastructure in the region significantly. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced via electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources like solar, wind or hydropower. Unlike hydrogen made from fossil fuels, green hydrogen has no direct carbon emissions, making it a cleaner energy carrier. Blending it with natural gas reduces carbon footprint, utilises the already laid natural gas infrastructure and helps to ramp up early demand for hydrogen. Speaking on the occasion, Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh has a target of 1 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production, for which it has set up a specific policy that will support potential investments. With the inauguration of this plant, green hydrogen has become a part of the life of common people as it will directly reach their kitchens and vehicles. the statement quoted him as saying. He also mentioned that availability of PNG has brought great relief to the people of Gorakhpur, especially the housewives due to the convenience, safety and savings it offers. Increasing use of CNG as transportation fuel has helped battle pollution and save costs for the masses. Various industries and commercial establishments in Gorakhpur are also now using piped natural gas and reaping the benefits of cheaper and economical fuel. Jinal Mehta, Director, Torrent Group, said, "Torrent Group is committed to making a significant contribution in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for India's Energy Transition and National Green Hydrogen Mission. The commissioning of Torrent Power's Green Hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur and its integration into Torrent Gas' City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, is a milestone in this endeavour. It lowers emissions, builds demand for green molecules, and creates a platform for deeper de-carbonisation in transport and industry, he said.

320 CNG buses to be inducted into TNSTC fleet in Kumbakonam division
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Kumbakonam Division, is all set to induct 320 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses into its fleet. Disclosing this at the Independence Day celebrations held at the TNSTC, Kumbakonam Division's headquarters in Kumbakonam, its Managing Director K. Dasarathan said that eight buses, running on CNG, were operated on a trial basis. It had been proposed to induct 150 CNG buses and convert existing 170 diesel buses into CNG vehicles this financial year, he added. Stating that it had been planned to add 511 new BS-VI stage buses and another 303 buses with German funding during the financial year 2025-26, the Managing Director said 10 low- floor buses were being operated by the Corporation in Tiruchi, according to an official release.

PM Modi announces National Deep Water Exploration Mission to find oil under seabed
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced a National Deep Water Exploration Mission aimed at discovering oil and gas reserves beneath the seabed, as part of efforts to boost domestic production and reduce the country's multi-billion-dollar import bill. India is dependent on imports to meet as much as 88 per cent of its needs of crude oil, which is converted into fuels like petrol and diesel, and about half of its requirement of natural gas, which is used to generate electricity, produce fertilisers and converted to CNG to power automobiles. One reason for high import dependence is that the country is not endowed with easy-to-find reserves. Large oil and gas discoveries like KG-D6 of Reliance Industries and KG-DWN-98/2 of ONGC happened in the pre-2014 period in deep-sea blocks. "A huge portion of the budget is spent on importing petrol, diesel, gas, and other such resources... lakhs of crores of rupees go into this," Modi said. "If we weren't dependent on energy imports, that money could have been used for eradicating poverty, farmers' welfare and improving conditions in our villages... but instead, we have to send it to foreign countries." The government, he said, is now working to make the country self-reliant in energy. "To make India a developed nation, we are now embarking on a new phase of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean)," he said. "Building on this effort, we aim to work in mission mode to explore and discover oil and gas reserves beneath the sea. That's why India is launching the National Deep Water Exploration Mission - a significant step toward achieving energy independence." While the large discoveries of KG-D6 and KG-DWN-98/2 and a few more off the East Coast happened in areas awarded under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) prior to 2014, the Modi government has revamped the exploration policy, ushering in an open acreage licensing policy and opening up record area for exploration of oil and gas. Commenting on the announcement, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, in a post on X, said several key reforms, including legislation like the ORD Amendment Act, have been put in place to enhance exploration and production activities in India over the last few years. "52 discoveries have been made in the last five years, and 172 since 2014, including 66 offshore. Acreage of more than 0.38 million square kilometres has been awarded (for exploration) as compared to 82,327 sq km between 2009 and 2014. India's energy sector is exploring new horizons." Recently, nearly 1 million sq km of erstwhile 'No-Go' areas have been opened up for exploration and put up for bidding. The areas opened up include new deepwater frontiers like the Andaman-Nicobar basin. Deep water, particularly off the Andhra coast and the Andaman Sea, may hold some prospects. Puri and his ministry have been touting the prospects of the Andaman Sea for some time now. "Andaman-Nicobar: India's Next Oil & Gas Hotspot! Its tectonic setting and proximity to proven petroleum systems in Myanmar and North Sumatra make it a high-potential exploration zone attracting global interest," the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had said in a post on X on July 31. Puri, in a post on July 30, had said, "Andaman's waters could hold the key to India's energy future". Stating that India is exploring this untapped frontier, he had said that 25 blocks have been offered for bidding under the current OALP-X bid round, including promising ones in the Andaman Basin, spanning around 2 lakh sq km. "A breakthrough here means less imports, more jobs, and stronger energy security," he stated.
