Job fraudsters trick Bengaluru journalist into paying Rs 55 lakh ‘as processing fees and GST', police book 5

A 49-year-old journalist and author living in Bengaluru lost Rs 55 lakh in 73 days after fraudsters who offered him high-paying jobs tricked him into transferring money in the name of registration fees, processing charges, and Goods and Services Tax, the police said on Wednesday. According to the cyber police, who have registered a case and are investigating, the resident of Kasavanahalli in Bengaluru filed a complaint on Tuesday stating that he had registered on and received a call asking him to register on the Indeed job portal. The fraudsters used spoofed numbers and email addresses, including indeed1008@ybl, and hr@ to build credibility, according to the FIR. They also provided fake credentials, including job IDs and designations of people at companies like Amazon. Over two and a half months, the complainant said, he transferred the money to multiple bank accounts, in what he believed were official transactions linked to job confirmations. When the promised job offers never materialised and communication ceased, he realised he had been duped. The FIR names five suspects—Pankaj Singh, Karthick, Abhinav Arora, Ram Gopal Meena, and Bidappa—all thought to be operating from Delhi and Haryana. It has been filed under sections 66(c) (identity theft) and 66(d) (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act and sections 318(4)(cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Curbs on movement of heavy vehicles hit CNG supply to fuel outlets

Most of the 77 fuel outlets in the city have been facing a dearth in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) over the past few days, due to the restrictions placed on the movement of heavy vehicles. Official sources in the oil industry said that they were unable to supply around 45,000 kg of the 2.20 lakh kg of fuel delivered to 65,000 CNG vehicles (45,000 being autorickshaws) due to the restrictions. Since most times CNG vehicles get to fill their tanks only at night, they are the most affected. Karthick, an autorickshaw driver said that waiting for CNG was bothersome, but having to go from bunk to bunk was worse. 'We wait for CNG only because the fuel gives better mileage,' he added. 'This has led to long queues, particularly of autorickshaws, at bunks with CNG. At times, some bunks even run out of the fuel, which is sent from Vallur in 150 trucks. Also, since each truck takes about two hours to decant the fuel, we need to spend more time in the city,' a dealer said. Sources in the dealer network said they also faced problems when it came to obtaining petrol and diesel. 'There are delays in the trucks reaching the outlets. The restrictions have been put in place, keeping in mind the safety of the public. However, these are essential goods, and when retail outlets go dry, it inconveniences the same public. We have urged the State-run oil marketing companies to take up the issue with the police,' a dealer said. Meanwhile, another source said that as far as CNG was concerned, the issue had been raised with the police and various government officials, and hopefully, the problem would be resolved. They would also take up the issue of petrol and diesel trucks with the authorities concerned.

Worker beaten to death, six held

Six persons were arrested on Wednesday for reportedly beating a worker to death. P. Ajithkumar, 21, of Ariyagoundampatti in Suramangalam, was found dead behind a godown in the area on Monday (May 26) night. The Suramangalam police sent the body to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for postmortem and registered a case. The postmortem revealed internal injuries to the back of the head, leading police to suspect that he was beaten to death. The police detained five of Ajithkumar's friends for questioning. Investigations revealed that one of them, Karthick, had become acquainted with a girl on Instagram, who was also friends with Ajithkumar. Karthick had warned Ajithkumar to end his friendship with the girl. When Ajithkumar refused, Karthick invited him to consume alcohol along with their friends—Manikandan, Arunkumar, Vasanth, Velan, and Vikram. During the gathering, the six allegedly assaulted Ajithkumar, striking him on the head with their hands, causing him to collapse. They then fled the scene. All five were arrested. Later, Karthick was also arrested. All six were remanded in judicial custody.
