JOHOR BAHRU - Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT) stalwarts Safiq Rahim and Farizal Marlias have bid farewell to the club after years of dedication to the Southern Tigers.
The club announced the duo's departure via a tribute on its official Facebook page, recognising their years of commitment, leadership and achievements that helped shape JDT into a dominant force in Malaysian and regional football.
Safiq, 37, joined JDT in 2013 and has been instrumental in the team's success, including captaining the side to the historic 2015 AFC Cup victory, the first time an East Asian club clinched the prestigious continental title.
Over the course of 270 appearances, the attacking midfielder netted 59 goals and provided 68 assists, helping the club secure an impressive list of honours - nine Malaysia Super League titles, seven Charity Shields, four Malaysia Cups, four FA Cups and one AFC Cup. Farizal, 38, who donned the JDT jersey in 2015, on the other hand, established himself as one of the country's finest goalkeepers, keeping 102 clean sheets in 222 appearances.
His tenure saw him win 10 league titles, nine Charity Shields, five Malaysia Cups, four FA Cups and the historic AFC Cup in 2015.
The Johor-born duo are widely regarded as legends, not only for their on-field success but also for their leadership and influence within the club.
Yesterday, JDT confirmed the release of 11 players ahead of the 2025-2026 M-League season through a post on social media.
Among those released were goalkeepers Farizal Marlias and Izham Tarmizi, as well as midfield legend Safiq Rahim.
The Southern Tigers also parted ways with seven foreign players, Jordi Amat, Jese Rodriguez, Murilo Henrique, Jonathan Viera, Alvaro Gonzalez, Roque Mesa, and Anselmo de Moraes, as the club looks to refresh its squad for the upcoming campaign.
The eleventh departure is Ramadhan Saifullah, who has completed a permanent transfer to Kuching City FC, officially bringing his journey with the Southern Tigers to a close. - BERNAMA

Sailors out to sink JDT in Causeway battle
KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore's Lion City Sailors insist they will not be overawed when they face regional giants Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the Asean Club Championship Group B clash at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Thursday. The Sailors suffered two defeats to JDT in friendlies last year — 4-0 in April and 1-0 in November — but coach Aleksandar Rankovic believes things will be different in a competitive setting. In another top clash, champions Buriram United from Thailand open its defence of the title against Selangor FC on Wednesday (Aug 20) when the 2025/26 Group Stage kicks off this week. JDT, the dominant force in Malaysian football for more than a decade, will host a Lion City Sailors side looking for an improved performance in the Shopee Cup after going out in the Group Stage last season, but face a challenging start to its campaign in Group B against the Xisco Muñoz-coached outfit. After claiming the domestic treble for the third year in a row when the club lifted the Malaysia Super League, Malaysia FA Cup and Malaysia Cup last season, JDT will now look to translate that domestic dominance into regional success in the Shopee Cup. JDT launched the defence of its Malaysia Super League title with back-to-back wins over Selangor and Negri Sembilan earlier this month to underline the club's status as one of the teams to beat in this year's Shopee Cup while Lion City go into the opener off the back of a surprise 4-1 loss to Tampines Rovers FC in the Singapore Community Shield. Both clubs have been handed blockbuster opening fixtures. Treble winners JDT, who swept the Malaysia Super League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup last season, make their long-awaited debut in the regional competition with a Causeway clash against Singapore's Lion City Sailors at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Thursday (Aug 21). The Sailors, fresh off their own domestic double, will be looking for redemption after failing to progress beyond the group stage last year. On Wednesday (Aug 20), Selangor face an equally daunting task when they travel to Thailand to meet reigning champions Buriram United at the Chang Arena in Buriram. The Thai giants are defending not only their regional crown – secured in a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Vietnam's Cong An Ha Noi in May – but also a domestic treble. Selangor, runners-up to JDT in both league and cup competitions last season, will be making their first appearance on the South-East Asian stage.
