Ryan Reynolds put on spot by Landon Donovan as he scoffs at Wrexham 'miracle'

Former Premier League star Landon Donovan has thrown down the gauntlet to Ryan Reynolds after casting doubt on Wrexham's fairytale rise. Since being taken over by the Deadpool actor and his fellow screen star Rob McElhenney in February 2021, the Welsh club have achieved an impressive three consecutive promotions.
The Red Dragons are now gearing up for their first season back in the second tier after a 43-year absence. The Hollywood duo have been lauded for their impact on Wrexham's fortunes, with their ambitions now set on reaching the Premier League.
However, ex-Everton midfielder Donovan has questioned the narrative of the team's ascent depicted in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. Appearing on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, which he presents alongside US legend Tim Howard, Donovan suggested that the owners' success was largely due to significant financial investment.
He also put Reynolds and McElhenney on the spot about whether they're prepared to dig deeper into their pockets to help Wrexham's push for the top flight.
"If you watch the show, you think it's some miracle, but it's not a miracle," Donovan said. "It's an amazing story, but they have also spent at the top of every one of the leagues they've been in.
"The question now is whether they can do it in the Championship. My first thought was no, but I did see a report last week that they were willing to offer a player £50,000 a week.
"They clearly have the money to do it, but are they going to take the risk? It's a big risk now, and you could lose £30m or £40m and not get promoted. It's going to be interesting to watch."
However, Howard was more upbeat about Wrexham's chances of making the challenging leap to the top. Despite acknowledging the substantial investment in the team, the ex-Manchester United goalkeeper highlighted that splashing out money doesn't always equate to success.
Howard said: "They say the hardest jump in all of the promotions is from the Championship to the Premier League, because there is just more money in that league.
"Money makes the world go round when it comes to football or sports, and they [Wrexham] are pumping a tonne of money into that team. They're just better and if they continue to do that, I think they could possibly do it [be promoted].
"It's mind-blowing if you think about it because this could have easily gone the other way. It could have easily gone really bad because they spent a tonne of money on the wrong players and didn't get this success." He added: "The Premier League is filled with all sorts of crazy stories and I hope they are able to do it."
Several current Premier League stars have been rumoured for a potential switch to Wrexham following their promotion. These include Fulham's Tom Cairney and the West Ham United pair of Danny Ings and Aaron Cresswell.

He told SunSport: 'There were no video phones in those days but I wish we could have filmed him as you'd have seen a special player. 'We'd spend maybe 1½ hours on a session and he'd spend another 20 minutes afterwards, wanting to master what he'd just done. 'I'd have to have another few kids to do a drill and do the same thing again with him because he just wanted to get it. 'It's rare you see that in a child that age.' McTominay was never fully utilised by successive United managers after being handed his Red Devils debut by Jose Mourinho in 2017. Jackson explained: 'Jose was just fantastic for him. Gave him his debut, looked after him. 'Scott always works off confidence and a pat on the back. If you believe in him, he'll run over coals for you. Conte's done that. There will certainly be some red faces in Manchester, seeing one of their own go on to this success. After a season of watching players lacking character and fight, and finishing a dismal 15th in the Prem, McTominay is exactly the sort of player they need. Earlier this season, former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shared his amazement by saying: 'How you can sell Scott is beyond me.' The biggest fear in Manchester is this might only be the start. Jackson, who keeps in touch with McTominay, added: 'The best is yet to come for him. I don't think you've seen anything yet. 'I used to say to his dad Frank, 'He'll never be looked at as world class and it's a shame but he should be because he is'. 'He had success with Man United but to go and do what he's now done . . . and there is much, much more to come. Everton want to bring John Stones back from Man City nine years after £50m sale
John Stones has struggled with injuries this season and there are concerns that he will be able to win back his place in Pep Guardiola's team, with his old club interested in bringing him back Everton are ready to sound out Manchester City about the possibility of taking John Stones back to the Merseyside club. Stones, who has been a pivotal figure under Pep Guardiola, has been plagued by injuries for the last two seasons and hasn't played since undergoing an operation to repair a hamstring tear he sustained in February. City signed young centre-backs Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah in January and are also big admirers of Toffees star Jarrad Branthwaite. Stones has just a year left on his £250,000-a-week contract and would have to take a pay-cut to link up again with David Moyes. But City's asking price is unlikely to be prohibitive and they are aware that the defender needs regular football to push for a place in England's World Cup squad next summer. Stones arrived from Everton in a £50million deal in 2016 and has won six Premier League titles. Guardiola sees him as the best ball-playing defender at the Etihad but there are serious questions about whether Stones can cope with the schedule of playing every three days. He has made only 13 starts this season and his campaign was ended when his hamstring flared in the Champions League defeat against Real Madrid. Moyes was Everton's manager when they signed Stones from Barnsley in 2013 for £3million. He played 95 matches for the Toffees over three seasons, and could have left the club for Chelsea in 2015 only to see three bids from the Blues turned down, with the third of those coming in at £30m. Stones, who turned 31 last Wednesday, has won 83 caps for England, and captained his country for the first time in the 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to Greece at Wembley in October last year.

Rodri has two years left on his current £200,000-a-week agreement. The new package will keep him in Manchester until 2029 and catapult him through the £300,000-a-week barrier to become City's second-biggest earner behind Erling Haaland. Rodri scored the winning goal in City's 2023 Champions League success but has long been regarded as the ultimate defensive midfielder. City's season fell apart when he was injured against Arsenal before they eventually clinched third place on the final day of the season. City will complete the £60million capture of AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan this week and are also looking to seal a £35million agreement to sign Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki before they go to the United States. Reijnders won't be the only Dutchman to arrive at the Etihad before the Club World Cup, with Jurgen Klopp 's former Liverpool No 2 Pep Lijnders agreeing to take up the same role alongside Guardiola. There may also be a role on Guardiola's backroom staff for former West Ham midfielder Alessandro Diamanti, who is currently a youth-team coach with sister club Melbourne City.
