Man City make decision on Rodri after being left astonished by state of fitness

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Rodri made his return from injury in the final week of the Premier League season, and now Manchester City are going to be relying on him at the Club World Cup
Manchester City are ready to hand Ballon d'Or winner Rodri a new contract.
The Spanish midfielder has been negotiating with the club about a new deal for almost a year but was sidelined until the final week of the season when he ruptured a cruciate ligament in September.

City's medical team have been astonished by the rate of Rodri's recovery and he is now set to play a big part in the Club World Cup after returning to action as a substitute in the penultimate game of the season.

It's expected that the 28-year-old will sign a new deal to reflect his importance to the club and his status as being recognised as the world 's top player.
Rodri has two years left on his current £200,000-a-week agreement. The new package will keep him in Manchester until 2029 and catapult him through the £300,000-a-week barrier to become City's second-biggest earner behind Erling Haaland.

Rodri scored the winning goal in City's 2023 Champions League success but has long been regarded as the ultimate defensive midfielder.
City's season fell apart when he was injured against Arsenal before they eventually clinched third place on the final day of the season.

City will complete the £60million capture of AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan this week and are also looking to seal a £35million agreement to sign Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki before they go to the United States.
Reijnders won't be the only Dutchman to arrive at the Etihad before the Club World Cup, with Jurgen Klopp 's former Liverpool No 2 Pep Lijnders agreeing to take up the same role alongside Guardiola.
There may also be a role on Guardiola's backroom staff for former West Ham midfielder Alessandro Diamanti, who is currently a youth-team coach with sister club Melbourne City.

Barcelona chief Deco drops hint on when Man Utd can expect Marcus Rashford bid

Marcus Rashford's agent was recently spotted in Barcelona for transfer talks but the Manchester United star will have to be patient if he wants to get his dream move Barcelona sporting director Deco says that his club will focus on the futures of their own players before making moves for targets such as Marcus Rashford. Barca are in the process of tying down a number of key players, with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal recently putting pen to paper on new deals. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny also has an offer on the table while Barcelona are in negotiations with defenders Inigo Martinez and Eric Garcia to secure their long-term futures. But they still expect to make 'two, three or four signings', Deco has confirmed. ‌ One of those could be Rashford, whose agent and brother, Dwaine Maynard, was seen meeting with Deco in Catalunya last week. The England international has been put up for sale by Manchester United, who loaned him out to Aston Villa for the second half of the season. ‌ Villa negotiated the option to sign him permanently for £40million but they're now unlikely to trigger that clause. It leaves Rashford, who's set to lose his shirt number at United, searching for pastures new and Barcelona are understood to be his dream club. But the 27-year-old will have to be patient and hope that they pursue a move for him instead of Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, as Deco outlined Barca's priorities. "We have been focusing on renewing contracts, after that, we'll discuss players to come," the former midfielder told BBC Sport. "Of course, these two players, like you mentioned, they are good but have contracts in their clubs, so we won't speak because it's not fair. But when you decide to go to the market, for sure, we find some names. In my opinion, we don't need to bring many players. "When I speak with the agents of the players, everyone wants to come or stay. So this is important. The image of the club is still good. We are proud because Barcelona is still such a big club, and the way we are playing football makes players want to come." Should Barcelona sign Marcus Rashford? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ Deco also confirmed that Barca will 'not sell their best players', despite their precarious financial position. The newly-crowned La Liga champions dominated Spanish football in Hansi Flick's first season in charge and were minutes away from reaching the Champions League final. Flick described both Rashford and Diaz as a 'fantastic players' when asked about the attacking duo last month. "I don't want to talk about players who aren't part of my team, but they're both fantastic players and I like them," the German said. "We'll see what happens."

Liverpool's £109m offer for Florian Wirtz 'is REJECTED' - with an agreement between the Reds and Bayer Leverkusen 'still a long way off'

Liverpool 's club-record bid for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has been rejected, reports from Germany claim. Wirtz has been earmarked as the Reds' No 1 target this summer, as Arne Slot looks to build on the side that delivered him a Premier League title in his first season on Merseyside. The 22-year-old was key to Leverkusen's unlikely Bundesliga triumph in 2023-24 and has long been linked with a move to Bavarian giants Bayern Munich. Manchester City have also reportedly been tracking Wirtz, with Pep Guardiola reportedly viewing him as the perfect successor to Kevin De Bruyne as the club's primary creative outlet. In recent weeks however, Anfield has emerged as the most likely destination for the Germany international - with Wirtz having already agreed personal terms for a move. Liverpool further demonstrated their desire to complete the deal by tabling a bid worth €130milion (£109m). However, according to a report from Bild, the offer has been rejected with Leverkusen reportedly determined to secure a €150m (£127m) for their prize asset. The report further claims that the shortfall could be made up with performance-related bonuses but stresses that the deal is not considered to be in jeopardy. Another suggestion made in recent days is that Liverpool could offer a player to serve as a makeweight in negotiations, with Jarrell Quansah and Harvey Elliott named as potential candidates. Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was appointed Leverkusen's new head coach last week after Xabi Alonso departed to take charge of Real Madrid. Ten Hag has been out of work since being sacked by United in October but has wasted little time looking to the Premier League to reshape his new squad. On Sunday the Bundesliga side closed in on the signing of goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford. With their No 1 departing, Brentford are set to sign Liverpool academy graduate Caoimhin Kelleher in a deal worth £18m.

Jeremie Frimpong's response to career ambitions shows reason he joined Liverpool

Jeremie Frimpong completed his £29.5million move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last week, with the Dutchman now on his way to fulfilling his dreams of reaching the pinnacle of football Jeremie Frimpong once voiced his career ambitions as a teenager, showing why he chose to join Liverpool and how he has become a top player in recent years. The Reds completed their signing of the wing-back from Bayer Leverkusen last week after activating his £29.5million buyout clause. The Netherlands international penned a five-year contract with the newly-crowned Premier League champions. He is seen as the successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was unveiled as a Real Madrid player just hours before Frimpong's announcement, while also providing competition at right-back for Conor Bradley. ‌ Under the guidance of fellow countryman Arne Slot, the 24-year-old will look to reach new heights after being named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season twice. Frimpong became a standout player while playing a pivotal role in Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen team, achieving an unbeaten domestic double in 2023/24 where he scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in 47 matches. ‌ His move to Anfield marks a return to English football after leaving Manchester City six years ago, having joined the Etihad side at the age of 10 but failed to break into the first team. He then signed for Celtic in September 2019, enjoying an 18-month spell before switching to Leverkusen in January 2021. During his spell in Scotland, Frimpong didn't shy away from expressing his lofty ambitions, which have taken him to where he is today. Aged only 19, he announced to the world that he wanted to win football's biggest individual and team accolades, a testament to the character Liverpool have added to their ranks. In a 2019 interview with the Mail, Frimpong boldly stated: 'I want to be the best player there is. I want to play for the biggest team ever. I want to win the Champions League. I want to hold the World Cup. I want to win as many trophies as I can.' With Scottish Premiership and Bundesliga titles already under his belt, helping Liverpool retain their Premier League title and conquering Europe would certainly edge Frimpong closer to his dreams. The Dutch contingent at Liverpool, which includes Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, is expected to ease Frimpong's transition to life on Merseyside. He even acknowledged looking up to Van Dijk, his compatriot and Liverpool captain, during his time at Celtic. ‌ Frimpong said at the time: 'Look at Virgil van Dijk. There's the example. Played for Celtic; four years later, he nearly wins the Ballon d'Or at Liverpool. He was so close. So can I be the best player there is? Yeah, I think I can be.' Upon joining Liverpool, Frimpong told 'It (the transfer) went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer. 'For me, it was like, 'Whatever you guys do, just get this done.' [Speaking to] my agents, 'Just get this done.' Liverpool fans, I'm going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate. "Hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together. I'm just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won't let you guys down, and I'll give you the energy that you guys want.'
