Man City make decision on Rodri after being left astonished by state of fitness
Rodri made his return from injury in the final week of the Premier League season, and now Manchester City are going to be relying on him at the Club World Cup Manchester City are ready to hand Ballon d'Or winner Rodri a new contract. The Spanish midfielder has been negotiating with the club about a new deal for almost a year but was sidelined until the final week of the season when he ruptured a cruciate ligament in September. City's medical team have been astonished by the rate of Rodri's recovery and he is now set to play a big part in the Club World Cup after returning to action as a substitute in the penultimate game of the season. It's expected that the 28-year-old will sign a new deal to reflect his importance to the club and his status as being recognised as the world 's top player. Rodri has two years left on his current £200,000-a-week agreement. The new package will keep him in Manchester until 2029 and catapult him through the £300,000-a-week barrier to become City's second-biggest earner behind Erling Haaland. Rodri scored the winning goal in City's 2023 Champions League success but has long been regarded as the ultimate defensive midfielder. City's season fell apart when he was injured against Arsenal before they eventually clinched third place on the final day of the season. City will complete the £60million capture of AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan this week and are also looking to seal a £35million agreement to sign Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki before they go to the United States. Reijnders won't be the only Dutchman to arrive at the Etihad before the Club World Cup, with Jurgen Klopp 's former Liverpool No 2 Pep Lijnders agreeing to take up the same role alongside Guardiola. There may also be a role on Guardiola's backroom staff for former West Ham midfielder Alessandro Diamanti, who is currently a youth-team coach with sister club Melbourne City.

We'll talk once there's a ruling – Khaldoon Al Mubarak on Man City charges
City were referred to an independent commission in February 2023 over alleged breaches of league financial rules, which City strenuously deny. The commission heard the case between September and December last year but no outcome has yet been announced. Khaldoon was asked about the charges during an in-house interview earlier this week, and said: 'Well, I suppose the only thing I can say is we still don't have a ruling. Club statement — Manchester City (@ManCity) February 6, 2023 'Once there's a ruling, I'll be able to speak about it. Until then we just have to be patient, and it'll come, and we will talk about it, I promise you, once we have the ruling.' The investigation which ultimately resulted in more than 100 charges being laid started back in 2018. City were charged with failing to report accurate financial information for nine seasons stretching from 2009-10 to 2017-18, as well as failing to provide full details of former manager Roberto Mancini's pay between 2009-10 and 2012-13. They are also charged with failing to provide full details of remuneration in contracts with players between 2010-11 and 2015-16, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation over a period from 2018 to 2023. The club said at the time the charges were laid that they welcomed the opportunity for a commission 'to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of our position'. City won the Champions League at the end of the season the charges were laid in, securing themselves a place in FIFA's expanded 32-team Club World Cup which starts next month. World players' union FIFPRO has criticised the scheduling of the competition amid player welfare concerns and, along with Europe's domestic leagues organisation, has filed legal complaints against FIFA over a lack of consultation around the international match calendar. Manchester City's 2023 Champions League success secured their place in the Club World Cup this summer (Martin Rickett/PA) Despite that, Khaldoon insists the club are taking the competition seriously and treating it as the official start of next season rather than an extension of the current one. 'This is a very, very serious competition. In the summer, the whole world will be watching this,' he said. 'A big number of the top teams in the world will be competing in this tournament and I can assure you, we're going to give it our best shot. We're going there to win it. 'This is the beginning of the new season, not the continuation of last season. The team will take the rest that they will take right now, then they start pre-season and then immediately straight into the Club World Cup.'

Napoli close in on De Bruyne as Conte decides to stay with Serie A champions
Asked by reporters late on Thursday night, Napoli's sporting director Giovanni Manna said that De Bruyne was "pretty close" to joining Romelu Lukaku, Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour in moving to Italy from the Premier League. Earlier this month De Bruyne ended a 10-year spell at Manchester City, where he won six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League. De Bruyne, 33, will have Conte as his coach after he and Napoli ended weeks of speculation by confirming that he would stay to defend the Scudetto. Conte had been tipped for a return to Juventus, where he spent the bulk of his trophy-laden playing career and won three league titles as a coach, after publicly bemoaning the running of the club by film mogul owner Aurelio De Laurentiis. "At the end of every season coach and club always get together to assess the past season, to see if there is a shared vision and if there is still desire to continue towards certain goals," Conte told Sky Sport. "We have a contract and seeing as we have a shared vision, we don't have anything else to add. We're moving forward because we're serious people." Conte, who has a contract until 2027, has revolutionised Napoli since taking charge of a club still reeling from a disastrous defence of the 2023 league title which ended with a 10th-placed finish. The 55-year-old has got the best out of Lukaku and in particular McTominay who took to Napoli and Naples like a duck to water after arriving from Manchester United.
