Napoli close in on De Bruyne as Conte decides to stay with Serie A champions
Asked by reporters late on Thursday night, Napoli's sporting director Giovanni Manna said that De Bruyne was "pretty close" to joining Romelu Lukaku, Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour in moving to Italy from the Premier League.
Earlier this month De Bruyne ended a 10-year spell at Manchester City, where he won six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League.
De Bruyne, 33, will have Conte as his coach after he and Napoli ended weeks of speculation by confirming that he would stay to defend the Scudetto.
Conte had been tipped for a return to Juventus, where he spent the bulk of his trophy-laden playing career and won three league titles as a coach, after publicly bemoaning the running of the club by film mogul owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.
"At the end of every season coach and club always get together to assess the past season, to see if there is a shared vision and if there is still desire to continue towards certain goals," Conte told Sky Sport.
"We have a contract and seeing as we have a shared vision, we don't have anything else to add. We're moving forward because we're serious people."
Conte, who has a contract until 2027, has revolutionised Napoli since taking charge of a club still reeling from a disastrous defence of the 2023 league title which ended with a 10th-placed finish.
The 55-year-old has got the best out of Lukaku and in particular McTominay who took to Napoli and Naples like a duck to water after arriving from Manchester United.

The team from Mexico City looked to have booked their place - and the guaranteed $9.5 million participation reward - after a penalty from former LAFC player Brian Rodriguez in the 64th minute. But Brazilian Igor Jesus's 89th minute header for LAFC took the game into extra-time and five minutes from the end of the second period Bouanga drilled home the dramatic winner. It was a game with high stakes played in front of a boisterous crowd divided between the two teams and the tension was palpable from the outset. But it was the Californian club, who only began life in MLS seven years ago, who triumphed and earned a spot in the first edition of the expanded 32-team FIFA tournament. LAFC will line up in Group D of the Club World Cup, where they will face Premier League side Chelsea, Brazil's Flamengo and Esperance Tunis of Tunisia in the tournament which gets under way on June 14. The one-off 'play-in' match came about following FIFA's decision to ban Mexican club Leon from the tournament. Leon were barred because the club is owned by Grupo Pachuca, which also controls Liga MX side Pachuca, who are also taking part in the tournament. LAFC were given the chance on the basis of finishing as runners-up to Leon in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League. America, founded 108 years ago, were handed the opportunity due to their status as the "top-ranked team" in confederation rankings. While LAFC had the nominal home field advantage, at their BMO Stadium, California is home to many Club America fans and the result was a de facto neutral venue. The atmosphere was electric but chances were rare in the opening half with the Mexican team enjoying the better possession but causing few problems for LA's former France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. But when Mark Delgado's challenge on Erick Sanchez in the box was ruled a foul, after a VAR review, substitute Rodriguez kept his cool and sent Lloris the wrong way to put America ahead. Rodriguez had a chance to secure the outcome 10 minutes later but he floated his shot wide. The introduction of former France and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in the 74th minute proved to be decisive, however, with the 38-year-old's presence causing plenty of problems for the America back line. Thundering header Giroud's improvised shot with the outside of his foot forced Luis Malagon into a save and moments later the Club America keeper kept out a header from the Frenchman. With just a minute of normal time remaining, LAFC grabbed a lifeline when a Bouanga corner was met with a thundering header from Jesus. LAFC almost won the game in regulation but Malagon did brilliantly to keep out a cross/shot from Timothy Tillman that was heading towards the top corner. Then it was extra-time and with penalties looming, Frankie Amaya fed a ball in to Giroud on the edge of the box who laid off to the on-rushing Bouanga whose fierce shot took a wicked deflection and flashed past the helpless Malagon. The France-born Gabon international has scored 80 goals for LA, in all competitions, since joining the club from Saint Etienne in 2022 but none more valuable than this one. The win ensures that the tournament host nation will have three competing teams from Major League Soccer with the Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami already in the competition. The tournament concludes with a final in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 13 with the winner taking home over $100 million.

Gasperini announces Atalanta departure before Roma move
Gasperini, 67, departs after turning the Bergamo club from provincial also-rans in the shadow of the Milan giants down the road to one of Italy's best teams and even Europa League winners last year. "In the last few hours I have decided to put an end to a wonderful nine-year-long story... I'm ending my experience in Bergamo as head coach of Atalanta," Gasperini said in an open letter written to newspaper L'Eco di Bergamo. "I decided to end my relationship with the club, and no responsibility should be put upon the club or its directors. I've simply come to understand that the time has come to take this step." Atalanta finished third in Serie A this past season and secured Champions League football with two matches left to play after falling short with an ambitious bid for the club's first league title. Gasperini is set to join Roma on a three-year contract with a net salary of five million euros a season as the capital club try to re-establish themselves in the Serie A top four. Roma last qualified for the Champions League in 2017 and missed out in a spot in Europe's top club competition on the final day of the campaign last weekend, after a surge up the table under local hero Claudio Ranieri. Ranieri came out of retirement in November to save Roma from sliding into the relegation positions and guided them to fifth and a place in the Europa League. Roma, one of Italy's biggest clubs with a large and passionate support, have only won Serie A three times, the last coming way back in 2001. They have been overtaken by fierce rivals Napoli whose recent Scudetto triumph took their tally to four, and two in the past three seasons. Gasperini is a spiky character prone to angry outbursts at journalists and he will have to deal with both an expectant, highly-strung fanbase and an intense media environment in the Italian capital. There are a slew of radio stations, websites and even a daily newspaper entirely dedicated to Roma, which have caused bust-ups with previous coaches and can create enormous pressure if results are not good. Gasperini has chosen Roma over Juventus who tried to convince him to move to Turin after failing to snatch club icon Antonio Conte from Napoli. Juve are now in a bind as current coach Igor Tudor was ony supposed to be a stopgap until the end of the season after replacing sacked Thiago Motta in March.

Everton seal permanent deal for Alcaraz
Alcaraz will pen a two-year contract with Everton, who have agreed a reported £12.6 million ($16.9 million) fee for the midfielder. The 22-year-old Argentine scored two goals and provided three assists in 16 appearances in all competitions after joining David Moyes' side on a temporary basis in January. Alcaraz, who started seven times in the Premier League for Everton, scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at Newcastle on the last day of the top-flight season. He had previously played in the Premier League for Southampton after signing from Argentina's Racing Club in 2023. Alcaraz had a spell on loan at Serie A side Juventus before joining Flamengo in August.
