PM greets Col Qureshi's family during roadshow
Vadodara: During his roadshow through the city, titled Sindoor Samman Yatra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the family of Col Sofiya Qureshi, who was among the faces of the govt briefings during
Operation Sindoor
.
Her family was given space on a stage along the roadshow route and showered flowers on the PM when he drew near.
The Qureshi family — Sofiya's parents, brother and sister — were given seats on the stage on the route of the roadshow. When Modi's motorcade got near the stage, it slowed down and Modi's SUV drove near to the stage, much to the surprise of the family.
"We only knew that we would be given space on the stage and were invited to the roadshow.
Officials of the district collectorate informed us about the arrangements and Vadodara Municipal Corporation officials gave us feelers about this," said Sofiya's brother, Mohammed Sanjay Qureshi.
When the PM got close to the stage, the family showered rose petals on him. Modi greeted them with a 'namaste' by folding his hands and asked about their well-being with gestures. He then gave them a thumbs up before moving on.

Sanjay said they were surprised and proud of the interaction. "It is like a dream come true. It was also nice to see that a large majority of the crowd were women, with hardly any men there. We will remember this for a lifetime," he added.
Sofiya's twin sister, Shyna Sunsara, told mediapersons that the family felt honoured. She added that Sofiya was not merely her sister but the sister of the nation. "She is an inspiration not only for us but for others too," she said.
The PM began his two-day visit to the state from Vadodara. This was his first visit to the state after Operation Sindoor. The roadshow began at the exit of the airport and culminated at the Indian Air Force station entrance on New VIP Road.
Throughout the roadshow route, people waved the tricolour and shouted slogans. Modi stood out of the door of his car and waved to the crowd. Foreign students from various countries were also present.
Patriotic songs were played throughout the route. Cutouts of the Rafale and Tejas fighter jets, as well as the BrahMos missile, were also displayed.

This is Dravidian model, not Gujarat model: Stalin
Chennai: Refuting charges that the govt wanted to cover up a polluted canal with cloth to hide it from public sight during his Madurai visit, chief minister M K Stalin said on Monday that he had inspected the canal and issued instructions to clean it. "This is not a BJP model govt to cover up truth from world leaders using cloth. This is Dravidian model govt which uncovers cloaks, finds out what was being hidden and finds the solution for the problem," Stalin said in a letter to DMK cadres. Stalin was referring to criticism from opposition parties that cloth was draped to block the polluted Panthalkudi canal from public view during chief minister's road show in Madurai. "Following the reports in media as well as criticism on social media that a canal was covered with cloth, I issued directions to remove the cloth. During my visit to the canal in the evening along with ministers Palanivel Thiaga Rajan and P Moorthy and district officials, I inquired about the cleaning process undertaken in the canal and directed them to expedite the process," Stalin said. He said those who criticise the DMK govt would have realised that the govt was working to find solutions to problems faced by people. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like ¿Cómo obtener un segundo ingreso invirtiendo $100 con IA? Addressing reporters in Madurai, former minister Sellur Raju said the AIADMK govt had built a sewage treatment plant to prevent pollution of water in Panthalkudi canal and river Vaigai. "We built that plant to ensure that the Panthalkudi channel stayed clean. But now, in the name of development of Goripalayam flyover, they have scrapped it. This is not development—it's destruction," he said. The STP can treat two MLD a day and recently the Madurai corporation has allocated 1 crore to restore the facility after the flyover works are completed, he said.

CM calls for measures to protect Kolleru lake
Vijayawada: Stressing on the need for environmental protection, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday said the ecologically sensitive Kolleru lake must not be turned into a cesspool of pollution. The CM, who held a review meeting with local legislators and officials to discuss the steps needed to comply with Supreme Court guidelines as well as protecting the interests of those living within the lake's contours, asked officials to take immediate steps to ensure drain water from neighbouring fish ponds does not not enter the lake without proper treatment. "Unchecked release of drains must be stopped, and all encroachments on Upputeru, which carries water from Kolleru to the sea, must be removed along with desilting of the outlets," he told officials. Naidu said protecting the interests of farmers with about 20,000 acres of Jirayat and D-Patta lands in Kolleru area is the top priority for the state govt while resolving contour issues. He asked officials to send the govt's proposals to the central empowered committee (CEC) as directed by the Supreme Court. "The action plan must ensure justice not only to the environment and birds but also to local people. We must take a humane approach to resolve the complex issue," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologista recomenda: simples truque elimina o fungo facilmente Acabe com o Fungo Undo He said the National Wildlife Board recommended the exclusion of 20,000 acres from Kolleru sanctuary and proposed new boundaries. The Union govt sought the opinion of the state govt after the CEC raised objections, but the YSRCP govt neglected the issue, leaving about three lakh people residing in the area on tenterhooks, he alleged. After reviewing the preparations being made for a massive plantation drive to be taken up on June 5, Naidu set a target of planting one crore saplings across the state. He directed officials to take steps to geo-tag the plants to track the progress, and urged district collectors, ministers, and public representatives to actively participate in the programme by planting trees in educational institutions, hospitals, govt offices, bus stations, and along roadways, with proper tree guards.

Once in power, will set up judicial commission to probe false cases, police misuse: Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring
Ludhiana: Taking a stringent stand against the misuse of the police and their "willingness to oblige their political bosses and victimise innocent people by registering false cases, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday said once the Congress forms the govt in the state, it would set up a judicial commission to probe such cases. Addressing the 'Save Constitution' meeting in the Dakha assembly segment, on the city outskirts, Warring alleged that there was complete abuse of the Constitution in Punjab, with a section of police betraying their uniform. The meet was organised by Congress leader Capt Sandeep Singh Sandhu. Calling for tough and stringent measures to fix responsibility for false cases, Warring suggested that any official who was found to have registered a false case should not only be dismissed from the service but should also be made to spend the same period of time in jail as the innocent victim of the false FIR. Alleging that Punjab had turned into a police state, he referred to the killing of one person in police custody recently. He said there was no accountability and called for this practice to stop. The Ludhiana MP said Punjab needed serious police reforms to prevent the misuse of power. The Congress leader also took a dig at the Punjab govt's campaign against drugs – Yudh Nashya Virudh. Referring to the claims by the AAP govt that it registered 8,500 cases, he asked: "Do drugs finish with mere registration of FIRs or demolishing houses of people?" "Drugs are still being frequently peddled and people are still dying from drug overdose," he said, while referring to the complete failure of the govt in curbing drugs in the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Warring also re-inducted the suspended Phillaur Congress MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhry into the party.
