Luxembourg axe star man Gerson Rodrigues after controversial appearance at home to Ireland

Their manager Luc Holtz had already paid the price for his role in the episode by being denied a contract extension.
Ireland's friendly in Luxembourg in June was marked by protests from home supporters at the presence of Rodrigues in the side, their second home friendly of that June window.
He had been convicted of a domestic abuse charge and was given an 18-month suspended sentence but politicians and women's rights groups there protested at the fact he was being selected.
Irish fans in the stadium joined in the protests, with travelling supporters from Ireland displaying the red card and booing any time Rodrigues touched the ball.
Long-serving coach Holtz had defended, before the game and in the aftermath, his call to select the player saying there was no legal block on his selection.
Last month the Luxembourg FA decided, after a 'thorough analysis' of the matter, not to extend Holtz's contract when his current deal runs out in December, though they plan for him to be in charge for World Cup qualifiers, including a date with Northern Ireland.
The FLF also apologised to a local journalist who had been barred from attending a press conference over his coverage of the affair.
And now they have stated that Rodrigues – who has since moved to a club in Thailand – will not be selected for national team duty. They begin their World Cup campaign at home to Northern Ireland next month.
'The image of the Luxembourg football institution and all its members has been affected by the 'Gerson Rodrigues affair'. We would like to point out that the reputation of the Federation and its members is above any individuality and sporting considerations,' the FLF said.
'Despite the advice and recommendations that the Federation officials tried to give to the player concerned, he did not respond favourably.
'Consequently, the board of directors has decided that the aforementioned player is no longer eligible for selection until further notice for future international matches of the national team.'

Police dismantle gang smuggling marijuana to Ireland in farm feed

Spanish police, in collaboration with An Garda Síochána and police in the UK, have dismantled a criminal gang suspected of smuggling marijuana hidden inside sacks of animal feed sent to Ireland. The investigation began in January 2025 after authorities identified a group involving Irish, British and Spanish nationals using international freight companies to ship pallets of animal feed with concealed marijuana buds to Ireland, Spain's National Police said in a statement. The statement said 12 searches were carried out in Madrid, Malaga and Seville. Nearly €100,000 in cash was seized, along with 630 marijuana plants, a firearm and three detonators, high-end vehicles, luxury watches, electronic devices and items relating to criminal activity. At the same time as the searches, property and financial assets worth more than €2 million were blocked. Officials estimate the group trafficked more than three tonnes of marijuana since 2019, maintaining steady monthly shipments. Several shipments were intercepted in Spain and Ireland during the probe, with about 300 kilos of marijuana seized. One person in Ireland was arrested after gardaí searched a house in Co Louth. Thirteen people in Spain were also arrested. The operation was carried out with support from gardaí and Britain's national crime agency. Spain is a major gateway for drug trafficking into Europe due to its proximity to Morocco - a leading cannabis producer - and its historical ties to Latin America.

Edel McMahon and Christy Haney emerge as Ireland injury concerns ahead of World Cup

Ireland have been hit with another double injury blow ahead of the World Cup with co-captain Edel McMahon and Christy Haney unavailable for Saturday's final warm-up match against Canada. Head coach Scott Bemand will name his 32-woman squad for the tournament on Monday. Already without star forwards Erin King and Dorothy Wall, and with a big question mark over Aoife Wafer, Ireland can least afford to lose two more experienced forwards for the World Cup, which begins for Ireland against Japan on 24 August. Flanker McMahon, who has 34 caps, has been dealing with a knee issue, while 24-cap prop Haney has an hamstring injury. "Christy Haney (above) has picked up a bump, hamstring piece so that rules her out of consideration for this," Bemand told RTÉ Sport when asked if anyone was not considered for the game due to injury. "Other than that we are in pretty good health coming back from the Scotland game. "Obviously we've said that Aoife Wafer is tracking nicely but isn't at the point to be considered for this game but other than that, as a squad, we're in reasonable health." Asked specifically about co-captain McMahon, he replied: "Sorry, Tricky [Edel] as well. She's back on pitch and training and is doing a great job, bringing her leadership capabilities and setting the standard within straining as she always had. "This one probably comes a beat early but she's right on the cusp of being ready. There'll be a piece that she's in the mix but not quite yet. "Over the course of the summer we've just being managing a knee piece. She's back on pitch training with the group now and ramping up the training minutes." The Ireland team to face Canada in Belfast on Saturday at midday contains 10 changes to the team that beat Scotland last weekend. On new squad member Ellena Perry (above), who has switched from England, Bemand said of the prop: "Yeah, Elle Perry is known to some of our group with Gloucester-Hartpury. "She's previously represented the Rose Roses and has an Irish grandparent, so we've been able to utilise connections from before. "She hasn't played for England since 2020. She's a very good player. "She started both the PWR semi-final and final last year so in terms of capability [she's up there] and playing level. "She's been in for a couple of weeks now and she's hit the ground running. She's more than earned her place in and around the group. "The fit has been a seamless transition so she'll put her hand up."
