Banyana Banyana morale sky high after pre-Wafcon friendly successes

Over and above winning both their final friendly matches before the start of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Banyana Banyana also welcomed back some stalwarts, as well as testing some promising youngsters.
Banyana Banyana recently played their final preparation international friendlies before they jet off to Morocco to defend their title as the queens of African soccer. Though both ended in victory, the core exercise from the two matches was Banyana coach Desiree Ellis assessing different things that the team is doing well, as well as where they can improve.
The two friendly fixtures, against Botswana and Zambia, ended in South Africa's senior women's soccer side winning 3-2 and 2-0 respectively.
During the two fixtures, Banyana's technical team tried out different combinations and provided a number of hopefuls with an opportunity to audition for a spot in the final side that will trek to North Africa.
Outside of the victories, which Ellis had said were not too important for her during this international window, one of the positive takeaways was the return to the team of some key senior players.
Old guard returns
In the win against Botswana, Banyana's co-captain Refiloe Jane made her return to international soccer — after a one-year injury-enforced absence. The skipper had last featured for South Africa in their 2024 Paris Olympic qualification clash against Nigeria, in April 2024.
The midfield general — who is also back playing in South Africa after leaving Italian outfit Sassuolo last year — put in a solid shift against Botswana. The TS Galaxy playmaker's return was complemented by defensive stalwart Bambanani Mbane also making a comeback after a similarly lengthy layoff.
Mbane's Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies teammate Karabo Dhlamini was also sidelined for large parts of 2024, but she is back just in time for Ellis' team as they attempt to retain the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title they won in 2022. The 23-year-old defender is a player Ellis is particularly fond of, due to her versatility.
'There are a few things we can be better at. A big plus for us is having our senior players back. Bambanani played two 90-minute periods since coming back from injury. Karabo also played 90 minutes after coming back from injury. We saw Refiloe Jane play 60 minutes,' Ellis said after the victory over Zambia.
'We are trying different combinations to make sure that we have enough versatility in the team. So, sometimes a player will play out of position and there is a reason why. We know they are capable of performing in different positions,' she said.
Squad depth and harmony
Ellis and her support staff have a healthy pool of talent to choose from before their quest in Morocco. The coach has already announced a 46-player preliminary squad for the Wafcon. She will have to trim this to 21 players for the tournament, hence the need for versatile players.
'It helps us in terms of options for Wafcon, because the squad we can select is really small. So, the versatility of players will be really important,' Ellis stated.
In addition to having some of her trusted soldiers back, the Banyana Banyana coach also had an opportunity to observe some of the exciting youngsters fighting to anchor themselves in the team.
This includes JVW pair Casey Gordon (goalkeeper), as well as forward Boitumelo Mokoma — who is one of the top scorers in the early stages of the 2025 Hollywoodbets Super League season. Then there is zippy winger Adrielle Mibe. All three are still in their teens.
'Wafcon is around the corner now. Players such as Bambanani and Refiloe are very important for us. Their experience is invaluable and we're happy that they are fit again. Even the newcomers are exciting for us,' said Dhlamini on the state of the team.
Denmark-based Bongeka Gamede played a starring role as Banyana downed Zambia's Copper Queens 2-0 in Pretoria on Tuesday, 3 June 2025. The defender struck a long-distance free-kick to propel South Africa to victory over the Zambians. She said the team was oozing confidence in the lead-up to their title defence.
'The preps are going well. We've played Botswana, we played Malawi and Zambia. Botswana and Zambia are going to the Wafcon, so now we have some idea of what to expect there. Now we will carry on preparing ourselves and we will be ready (to defend our title),' Gamede said.
The final squad announcement will be made on 23 June 2025 in Johannesburg. The team will then depart for Morocco shortly after.
Twelve teams qualified for the 2024 Wafcon, which will take place from 5 to 26 July 2025. Banyana are in Group C, where they will face Ghana, Mali and Tanzania. DM

'I advised Chiefs to sign Mayele but Bobby ignored me'

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Kanga Nzenza says he once advised Amakhosi to sign Congolese top striker Fiston Mayele, but his plea was left unheard. Mayele is one of the hottest strikers on the African continent, having helped Pyramids win the CAF Champions League this past weekend. The 30-year-old finished the competition as the top goalscorer, having scored in the semi-final and final. Since last year, Kaizer Chiefs have been linked to Mayele, but no formal bid has been made by the Soweto giants. Nzenza mentioned that he spoke with Amakhosi boss Bobby Motaung about the striker. 'I once advised Chiefs to acquire Mayele,' Nzenza told KickOff. 'Just look at what he is doing now. I was clear that Chiefs needed to sign him because he has the ability to do well here. He can blend well with the Chiefs players and has been performing well, even though he may not be in top form at the moment. 'I even mentioned to that I was struggling to reach Bobby Motaung about Mayele because he is always busy. My plea was that Chiefs must sign him. They received my message, but they didn't act on it,' added the retired footballer. 'At the time, he was playing for Yanga in Tanzania, but then a club from Egypt signed him. He's an exceptional player. Whenever he comes to play for the national team, they refer to him as a super sub. 'Whenever he comes on, he changes the game. Look at how Sundowns lost the [Caf] Champions League because of him.' Given how much Mayele earns at Pyramids, Kaizer Chiefs are unlikely to afford his wages. The striker is set to leave the Egyptian club at the end of the season, according to reports. Mamelodi Sundowns aiming for glory at revamped FIFA Club World Cup

Themba Zwane Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane, seen here receiving the Premiership trophy. Hopefully, the fan favourite Themba Zwane makes the squad for FIFA Club World Cup, hosted in the United States this June. They secured their spot after a landmark African Champions League victory. In Japan, their journey was cut short after they were defeated by the Kashima Antlers. Reflecting on their previous venture outside Africa, Sundowns faced a harsh reality during the 2016 Club World Cup in Japan, where they did not secure a single victory. Their participation creates a platform for the club to showcase its talent against elite sides from Europe, South America, and Asia. The team is set to face formidable group opponents, including Borussia Dortmund—2024 UEFA Champions League runners-up, Brazil's Fluminense, and South Korea's Ulsan. The South African giants have secured their spot in the expanded 32-team tournament, which features a quartet of African representatives. It has been eight years since their last appearance in this international competition. This time, however, they aim to make a lasting impression against some of the world's leading football clubs. Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up to compete in the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, hosted in the United States this June, as they eagerly anticipate a return to the global stage. Subsequently, the team fell to a staggering 4-1 loss to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the fifth-place playoff, with Percy Tau's solitary goal the sole highlight of an otherwise disappointing campaign. Fast forward to the present, and Sundowns have embraced the lessons learned from that experience. The team's strategy is poised for a notable shift as they prepare for matches in the US. Unlike the dominant style they are accustomed to in the Premier Soccer League's Premiership, Sundowns' coaching staff has indicated a more measured approach and recognised the level of skill and experience they will face on the global stage. As part of their preparations, Sundowns will conduct their final training at the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, a facility renowned for developing top-tier athletic talent. This world-class training environment aims to provide the team with the best possible chance of success in the tournament. The new look FIFA Club World Cup kicks off on June 15, and for Sundowns, this is more than just another tournament. It's an opportunity to put African football on the map and to demonstrate their potential against some of the best clubs in the world. After the heart-wrenching experience of the CAF Champions League final defeat, the SA giants are now poised to seize an extraordinary opportunity, one that comes with the promise of substantial financial gain at the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA. With a staggering R180 million up for grabs, the prize money dwarfs the combined earnings accrued from their recent exploits, runners-up in Africa and domestic league title holders. The Club World Cup's new format, which features eight groups of four teams, transforms each match into a lucrative affair. A single victory in the group stages is now valued at an impressive $2 million, marking a significant shift in how club football rewards success. But the financial potential does not end there. For Sundowns, the more they advance in the tournament, the more they stand to gain. The winners of the prestigious event will walk away with a staggering $40 million. A perfect run throughout the tournament could see the overall prize total soar to an astonishing $125 million. This monetary landscape presents an unparalleled chance for Sundowns to enhance their financial stability, improve their operational capabilities, and renew their aspirations on the continental stage. Capitalising on such lucrative prospects is crucial, and every player will need to bring their A-game should they wish to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime chance. Financial implications apart, it is also a pivotal moment for Sundowns to solidify their reputation and influence in global football. The journey ahead will undoubtedly be fraught with challenges, but the rewards could reshape the club's finances and also redefine its legacy in African football. As the countdown to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup begins, all eyes will be on Sundowns, a team that stands at the intersection of heartbreak and hope, ready to embark on a thrilling path towards history.

Brazil held in Ancelotti debut, Paraguay move closer to qualifying

MONTEVIDEO - Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. Argentina, already assured of a place in next year's tournament, beat Chile 1-0 in Santiago with a goal from Julian Alvarez, a result which guarantees Lionel Scaloni's team top spot and leaves bottom placed 'La Roja' with virtually no hope of qualifying. Ancelotti, the 65-year-old Italian, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager replaced Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of reigning champions and bitter rivals Argentina. Thursday's result leaves the Selecao in fourth place in the qualifying table on 22 points while Ecuador, the surprise package in the campaign, remain in second on 24 points. Argentina lead the standings on 34 points and are the only team to have officially secured their place in the tournament which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Paraguay, who enjoyed a 2-0 win over Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay, sit in third place, level on points with Ecuador. Ecuador knew a win would put them on the brink of qualification and there was a packed crowd at the Estadio Monumental in Guayaquil. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro, but the Manchester United midfielder, recalled to the national side by Ancelotti, saw a tame side-footed effort easily dealt with by Valle. PATIENCE While there was no instant impact from Ancelotti, Vinicius, who played under the coach in Madrid, said he needed time to make his impact felt. "I'm very happy to have Ancelotti here with us, because I've always said he's the best coach I've ever worked with. Having the opportunity to work with him in the Brazilian national team is the best," the winger told SporTV. "He hasn't had time to show his work, his game plan, because he's only had two or three days of training," he added. Atletico Madrid striker Alvarez put Argentina ahead at the Estadio Nacional in the 16th minute with a deft finish after he had been put through by a perfectly weighted pass from Thiago Almada. Lionel Messi came off the bench in the 57th minute but Chile sensed a chance to get something from the game and created more as the game progressed. Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez made a series of crucial saves and Lucas Cepeda went closest with a fierce shot which struck the bar. Cepeda then had the best chance of the game when he was found at the back post but he blasted his volley wide. Messi set up Giuliano Simeone with a chance to make it 2-0 but the son of former Argentina captain and Atletico Madrid coach Diego, fired his shot into the side netting. A header from midfielder Matías Galarza just 13 minutes into the game and a late penalty from Julio Enciso earned Paraguay a crucial victory over a depleted Uruguay. The victory left Paraguay on the verge of securing their return to the World Cup for the first time since qualifying for the 2010 finals in South Africa. Victory in Sao Paulo on Tuesday against Brazil would secure their place in the tournament. The top six teams in the 10-team qualifying group head directly into the World Cup draw while the seventh placed team must enter the inter-confederation playoffs.
