Matthew Goode told ‘not to read the Department Q novels' for Netflix show
In the adaptation of the Nordic noir novels, the action moves from Copenhagen to the Scottish capital Edinburgh, and is directed and written by multiaward-winning Scott Frank, known for Netflix series The Queen's Gambit and superhero film Logan.

Carl is a former top-rated detective, who is full of 'guilt' after his partner is paralysed and another policeman dies in an attack, before being given a cold case.
At a special screening of Netflix's Dept. Q at the Ham Yard Hotel in Soho, central London on Tuesday, Goode told the PA news agency that Frank 'really freed me up' having it based in Scotland, rather than Denmark.
He added: 'I don't think (making it in Denmark) would have fit this particularly well, it worked for (Swedish noir) Wallander (with Sir Kenneth Branagh).
'He (Scott) said to me, 'don't read the novels', because he also made me English, which made him (Carl) an outsider, and so I was able to develop with Scott a really brilliant sort of socio-political, economic, sort of history of what we thought this English version of Morck would be.'
Goode, who previously worked with Frank on crime show The Lookout, said the creator and executive producer of the new show 'treats the audience like they are as intelligent as he is, which is staggeringly intelligent'.
He added: 'It's a very taut, very dark, brilliant crime thriller with also a lot of levity. It's also very amusing, and one of Scott's pet hates is any kind of sentimentality. So it's a slow burn, but it unfurls itself beautifully.'
Adler-Olsen's books about a cold case unit have been previously adapted into films including the 2010 Danish movies The Keeper Of Lost Causes, A Conspiracy Of Faith and The Absent One.

When asked about the Netflix experience compared with the ones that have come before, the author said the previous movies were 'terrible, terrible in so many ways'.
He said: 'It's all about screenwriting. It's all about manuscripts, and the manuscripts of the former films were like amateurs.
'So now we have the best writer in the world, that makes a difference so that's why I wasn't that happy about (it before).'
Adler-Olsen also said he was 'looking forward' to seeing how the show changes, after moving to Edinburgh.
Speaking about what he had seen so far, the author said: 'I'm astonished how in the world is the story turning this way, I can't believe it.'
The cast also includes Scottish stars Shirley Henderson, known for playing Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter films and being in Bridget Jones's Diary, Mark Bonnar, who has been in detective shows Guilt and Shetland, as well as Swedish actor Alexej Manvelov.
Dept. Q comes to Netflix on Thursday.

Georgina flashed a massive diamond that took up almost half of her ring finger. It featured one stunning stone that glistened on the white bedsheets while Cristiano place his hand underneath. Talk quickly turned to the price of the stunning jewel as one said: "For how much? That must have cost a backpack." Others were more taken aback by the size of the ring as someone exclaimed: "That rock." Another went further as they added: "A glacier!" Some call the Sussexes' Netflix deal a demotion - but the company still sees them as a power couple
While we're all desperate to know what this new deal is really worth in dollars and pounds, one thing I can tell you for certain is that Prince Harry and Meghan want us to know they're delighted that Netflix again wanted to get a deal done. Yes this is a different type of deal from their original one in 2020. Some have argued that a "first look deal" looks like a demotion from what they previously signed up to. With no real clarity on how much their original deal was worth, and no numbers being publicly thrown around this time, that is hard to judge. But talking to those who know something about these kinds of deals you do get a sense it could potentially be more lucrative than it looks on face value. With first look deals, yes there is often financial commitments from the likes of Netflix to get that first exclusive look at projects and first refusal. What to expect on Netflix thanks to Harry and Meghan's new deal
Harry and Meghan have given the streaming giant first options on their output from Archewell Productions. Here is what to expect from the couple on Netflix in the coming months: – With Love, Meghan – Season 2 The second instalment of Meghan's lifestyle show will debut later in August. Netflix said: 'Meghan returns with a fun and heartwarming new season, welcoming celebrity chefs, talented artists, and beloved friends for hands-on adventures filled with laughter and discovery.' It promises 'playful cooking challenges' and 'DIY projects', adding: 'Meghan and her guests explore bold flavours, experiment with new techniques, and discover simple ways to add beauty to everyday life.' The show, Netflix says, is 'all about embracing playfulness over perfection and finding joy in creating together'. Season one was not, however, well received by critics and the show has a 3.2 rating out of 10 on – With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration The special holiday episode of With Love, Meghan will air in December. Netflix invites viewers to 'join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration'. The then-prince of Wales, then-duke and duchess of Cambridge, and the Sussexes attend the Christmas Day morning church service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham in 2018 (Joe Giddens/PA) It adds: 'Together, friends and family deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts, and share lots of laughs – with simple how-tos to follow at home. 'It's a holiday wonder with warmth, tradition, and a generous dose of joy.' The Sussexes used to spend Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham but Harry and Meghan, who moved to the US five years ago, last did so in 2018. Harry is estranged from his brother the Prince of Wales after a bitter fallout and has a troubled relationship with his father the King. – Meet Me At The Lake The 'romance feature' is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Carley Fortune. 'This romantic drama follows a decade-spanning love story that begins with a chance encounter and a broken promise,' Netflix says. No date has been announced for the project – news of which first emerged two years ago. The story deals with mental health, postnatal depression and childhood trauma over losing a parent in a car crash, with some of the themes said to have similarities with Harry and Meghan's own experience. – Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within The new documentary short, by Campfire Studios in Association with Wontanara Productions and Archewell Productions, will focus on a tiny orphanage in Uganda which was borne out of the HIV/Aids crisis. Harry and Meghan are listed among the producers and the documentary will be released later this year. The duke only recently stepped down from Sentebale, the charity he founded nearly 20 years ago to help children orphaned by Aids in Lesotho, following a boardroom battle with its chairwoman. Netflix says: 'In the heart of Uganda's Masaka region, where the shadows of the HIV/Aids crisis linger, a small orphanage becomes a beacon of hope. 'Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within goes beyond the viral videos to reveal a vibrant, one-of-a-kind community where orphaned children transform hardship into joy, dancing their way toward healing, belonging, and the promise of a brighter future.' It is not known whether Harry and Meghan will feature in the documentary. – Future projects Archewell Productions says it is 'in active development on additional projects with Netflix that span a variety of content genres'. The Sussexes' contract has been described as a 'multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects'.
