India U19 held to draw by England U19 in first Youth Test
Chasing a stiff target of 350, England ended on 270/7 in 63 overs, frustrating the visitors' push for a win that would have given them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Shaikh was the mainstay of England's resistance, scoring a composed 112 off 140 balls with 11 fours and two sixes here on Tuesday.
He received crucial support from Ben Mayes, who struck a steady 51 off 82 balls (3x4s), and wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew, who chipped in with a brisk 50 off just 35 balls (8x4s).
India had threatened to force a result when they reduced England to 62/3 in the 14th over but the hosts fought back through Shaikh's partnerships with Mayes and Rew.
With an hour left on the final day, India gave themselves hope by pulling off two run outs in successive overs -- first removing Shaikh and then sending back Ekansh Singh in the next over.
But Ralphie Albert (9 not out of 37 balls) and Jack Home (7 not out off 36 balls) showed commendable composure under immense pressure as India threw everything at them with an all-out attacking field.
Close-in fielders crowded the batters with two slips, a silly point, and a short leg forming a tight cordon, but the English pair held their nerves to survive the final overs and secure a hard-fought draw for the hosts.
Earlier, India U-19 resumed their second innings on 128 for three and posted 248 in 57.4 overs, setting England a daunting target.
Vihaan Malhotra top-scored with a gritty 63 off 85 balls, hitting 10 fours.
He and overnight partner Abhigyan Kundu looked settled before Alex Green (2/67) struck twice in quick succession, removing both while Rahul Kumar (11) also got out cheaply as India slipped from 171/3 to 187/6.
With the visitors in danger of a collapse, RS Ambrish played a crucial knock of 53 off 71 balls, adding valuable runs with the tail.
He was the last man to depart, run out as India folded for 248.
India U19, led by Ayush Mhatre, had earlier claimed the five-match Youth ODI series 3-2.

Gill has been impressive as leader as well as batter in the ongoing series, especially in the second Test where he registered his maiden win as red-ball captain with a commanding 336-run victory. However, there have been moments and phases where he has allowed the game to slip out of his grasp and allowed the Ben Stokes-led hosts to seize control. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As per former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar, Gill's on-field flare-up with the English openers shortly before stumps on Day 3 was one such moment. Gill got into a heated exchange with Crawley over the latter's delay tactics during Jasprit Bumrah's over after India had finished level on scores with the visitors with a little over 15 minutes to go for stumps. The 25-year-old skipper, however, couldn't back his words with a match-winning score during India's chase of the 193-run target on the following day as he was dismissed cheaply for 6. Manjrekar, for one, compared Gill with former India captain Virat Kohli, known for his fiery on-field demeanour and wasn't shy of giving it back to the opposition from time to time. 'With Virat Kohli, you could see that he was ready for a scrap' Manjrekar added that it wasn't necessary for Gill to show Kohli-like aggression after becoming the Test captain, adding that he would have exhibited it in the six years that have gone by since he made his India debut in January 2019. 'And just to extend on that point, if Shubman Gill had that kind of a fiery side to him, we would have seen it a little earlier. You don't have to show it when you're captain. Or did he show it because he's got this confidence now that he's won a Test match and he's got so many runs?' Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo. 'Because with Virat Kohli, you could see that he was ready for a scrap. He was always waiting to get in the thick of things. Even when he wasn't a captain, you could see him coming in there. 'Soft' Dukes ball under review, says manufacturer after player complaints
In the eye of a storm, the manufacturer of the Dukes ball on Friday said it will conduct a thorough review following widespread criticism of the "soft" balls used in the first three Tests between India and England, according to a report in the BBC. The on-field umpires have regularly changed the balls in the ongoing five-match series as they were unable to retain hardness and were going out of shape quickly, particularly post 30 overs. The whole process has caused delays to the match proceedings. Following criticism by India captain Shubman Gill and former English pacer Stuart Broad, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will collect as many used balls as possible and return them to the company that produces Dukes balls by the end of the week. "We will take it away, inspect and then start talking to the tanner, talking about all of the raw materials - everything," Dilip Jajodia, owner of British Cricket Balls Ltd, who make the Dukes, told BBC Sport. "Everything we do will be reviewed and then if we think some changes need to be made or tightened up, we will." The ball used for Test series is decided by the host board. The Dukes is used in England, Test matches in India are played with the SG ball, while teams use the Kookaburra in Australia. The Dukes ball, which has been in production since 1760, has faced some issues in Test and County cricket in recent years. During the Lord's Test, Gill was upset with the ball they were given by the umpires after the second new ball had to be changed in the first hour of the second morning. While Jasprit Bumrah had taken three quick wickets with the original ball, the Indian bowlers failed to make a single breakthrough in the rest of the first session after the red cherry was changed. Broad, a fierce critic of the Dukes ball in recent years, also expressed his displeasure with the replacement ball. England lead the five-match series 2-1 after victories in London and Leeds, while India won in Edgbaston.
