S Sreesanth Breaks Silence On 3-Year Suspension Over Sanju Samson Row: "Not Aware..."

NDTV02-05-2025

Former India cricketer S Sreesanth declined to comment on his three-year suspension by the Kerala Cricket Association, stating that he is not aware of the matter. Sreesanth was suspended by the KCA for his alleged false and derogatory statements against the organisation regarding Sanju Samson's omission from the national team for the Champions Trophy 2025. Sreesanth had alleged that Samson was sidelined by the KCA to play for the Kerala side last year and hence missed selection to the national team for the Champions Trophy. The decision was taken in KCA's annual general body meeting on April 30 in Kochi and was shared by the state cricket body via an official statement on Friday.
When contacted by IANS for his comments, Sreesanth remained tight-lipped to comment on the matter. "I'm not aware of it," Sreesanth said in response to IANS when asked about his suspension by the Kerala Cricket Association.
Meanwhile, Sreesanth is now waiting for the official communication from the KCA, and according to sources, he will be taking legal recourse against the three-year suspension.
This is not the first time that Sreesanth has courted trouble. The previous instance was in 2023 when the Legends League Cricket (LLC) Commissioner served him a legal notice following his rant over an on-field altercation with the current Indian men's team head coach Gautam Gambhir.
His previous troubles came at his last IPL match for the Rajasthan Royals against Punjab on May 9, 2013, the season in which he was accused of being involved in spot-fixing, which led to his arrest. Though Sreesanth always maintained his innocence throughout the controversy, he was handed a life ban along with Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila.
The fast bowler then challenged the decision in the Supreme Court, which set aside the life ban and asked the BCCI to consider a fresh punishment. The sentence was reduced to a seven-year suspension, which ended in September 2020.
Thereafter, Sreesanth played for Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2021. He played his last first-class game for Kerala against Meghalaya in the 2021-22 edition of the Ranji Trophy.
In March 2023, Sreesanth announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Indian men eye comeback against Netherlands in FIH Pro League

The Indian men's hockey team will look to bounce back from its narrow defeat in the opener when it takes on The Netherlands in the European leg of the FIH Pro League here on Monday. India squandered a one goal lead to lose 1-2 to Olympic champions Netherlands in the first match on Saturday. The Indian side showed promise in the early phases of the first half, with captain Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner to give his side the lead. The Dutch side, however, made a strong comeback and ultimately emerged victorious courtesy of a brace from Thijs van Dam, which included the winning goal in the 58th minute. With seven games left to play in the competition, India currently stand fourth in the points table with 15 points. 'We did well in the first half but the third quarter wasn't as good. In the fourth quarter we did well again and were winning the ball, but we weren't getting any shots on goal. 'It was unfortunate to lose like that because I thought we could push for a draw. We want to push ourselves as hard as we can, especially against a team like the Netherlands,' India head coach Craig Fulton said after the match. With next year's World Cup spot up for grabs, India will aim to do well in the remaining matches and gain maximum points against challenging opponents. India played the home leg of the Pro League in Bhubaneswar earlier this year, when it amassed 15 points with five wins in eight games.

Indian Engineer Dies During Scuba Diving Session In Dubai

An Indian civil engineer has died in the UAE while undergoing a scuba diving session during the Eid Al Adha holidays. The 29-year-old man, identified as Issac Paul Olakkengil, was in Dubai with his family when he took the session at Jumerah Beach on Friday (Jun 6), according to a report in Khaleej Times. Hailing from the southern Indian state of Kerala, Mr Olakkengil was enjoying the holidays alongside his wife, Resham and younger brother, Ivin when the tragedy struck. Mr Olakkengil suffered a cardiac arrest after experiencing difficulty breathing underwater. As per David Pyarilos, Mr Olakkengil's uncle, who is overseeing the legal procedure for the family, the incident took place during a training session at a designated scuba diving area. Both Reshma and Ivin were also receiving training when the situation took a turn for the worse. "It seems they were getting trained for scuba diving, and apparently, he [Issac] couldn't breathe properly and moved away from the pack," said Mr Pyarilos. "So, everyone panicked and was impacted underwater. I was told Reshma was rescued to the shore first, followed by the other two." Investigation underway While Mr Olakkengil was rushed to the hospital, where he could not be saved, his brother, Ivin, collapsed on reaching the hospital and is currently under observation. Mr Pyarilos confirmed that he was out of danger, but doctors were keeping close tabs on him. "All of them are engineers. While Issac and Reshma are in Dubai, Ivin is based in Abu Dhabi. Ivin's friends just told me they are concerned about breaking this heart-wrenching news to him, as the brothers shared a strong bond," said Pyarilos. Ivin was only informed about his brother's death on Saturday, while the family works with the police to complete the investigation. The Dubai law enforcement officials have seized the equipment used during the scuba diving session to analyse it. Mr Olakkengil's dead body will be repatriated to India after receiving the necessary legal documents.
