JAKARTA: (Bernama-Xinhua) Indonesian Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto has said that the government is preparing to build a new super-maximum security prison on a remote island as part of broader reforms to the country's correctional system, Xinhua reported.
"The president aspires to build a modern correctional institution with super maximum security, located on a remote island. It is now being prepared," he said on Wednesday (June 25) during a visit to a prison in Medan, North Sumatra province.
As part of wider efforts to improve the correctional system, Andrianto said that the government plans to build 13 new prisons across the country, which are expected to be operational by the end of this year.
He noted that the move aims to address the long-standing issue of prison overcrowding in Indonesia. - Bernama-Xinhua

Over 20 research projects at UK universities halted after U.S. funding withdrawal
LONDON, June 26 (Xinhua) -- More than 20 projects at Russell Group institutions, an association of 24 leading universities in Britain, have been halted following the withdrawal of U.S. funding, local media reported Wednesday. At least nine research projects at Russell Group universities have received formal stop notices from the U.S. government, according to Research Professional News (RPN), a London-based outlet. These notices, requiring a halt to work due to funding suspension, have resulted in either grant cancellations or suspensions at five Russell Group institutions. Information requests submitted by RPN to all Russell Group institutions revealed that a further 14 projects lost funding after receiving similar notices from their U.S. collaborators. One researcher whose project was delayed told RPN that they "felt like their funding had been used as a pawn." In some instances, British universities were notified by U.S.-based lead researchers who had awarded funding to their British collaborators, only to later inform them that the grants had been terminated.

Afghan forces dismantle over 20,000 drug labs
KABUL, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Afghan counter-narcotics forces have launched more than 98,000 operations nationwide in the past nearly four years, dismantling over 20,000 drug processing labs, according to the Ministry of Interior on Thursday. Speaking at a gathering in Kabul to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesman for the ministry, said that over 98,000 operations have been conducted across the country during the cited period, leading to the destruction of over 20,000 clandestine drug processing labs and the arrest of more than 28,000 drug traffickers. In a major crackdown on illicit crop cultivation, security forces have destroyed over 38,000 hectares of land used for growing poppy and hashish across the country during the period, Qani said. The Afghan interim government banned poppy cultivation and its processing and drug trafficking in April 2022, and has vowed to eliminate drug menace in the country.

Belarus president proposes to launch EAEU 2.0
MINSK, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko proposed to launch the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) 2.0, which would present its own signature Eurasian product, in demand and common to all participating countries. Speaking to a plenary session of the Eurasian Economic Forum in Minsk on Thursday, Lukashenko said that within the framework of Eurasian integration, participating countries need to develop a common product in order to gain and maintain positions in global markets. The strategy of the EAEU is calculated until 2025, and then the union is expected to begin working in a new capacity. "Today we have every reason to present individual elements of EAEU 2.0. In a situation of global turbulence, it is important not to trail behind events, but to influence the global agenda in a positive way, to have well-thought-out models for responding to external challenges," the Belarusian leader said. Having marked its 10th anniversary, the EAEU has demonstrated the ability to find mutually acceptable solutions and effective compromises, Lukashenko said. It is not just functioning, but is actually succeeding in its key parameters, he added. In ten years, the mutual trade turnover of the participating countries has more than doubled, and the volume of foreign trade has increased by 37 percent. The EAEU GDP has grown by almost 18 percent, industrial production by 30 percent, agricultural output by 25 percent, cargo turnover by 10 percent, and investment by more than 40 percent. Lukashenko expressed the belief that free employment in the countries of the EAEU has become an important achievement for citizens. Belarus is chairing the EAEU bodies in 2025.
