Ford envisions three-level tunnel under Highway 401, feasibility study not started

Yahooa day ago
THORNHILL, ONT. — Ontario Premier Doug Ford is revealing more details about his planned tunnel under Highway 401, even as a feasibility study he's commissioning has yet to get underway.
Speaking at an unrelated transit announcement today in Thornhill, Ont., north of Toronto, Ford said his plan is to have a 19.5-metre-wide, three-level tunnel, with one level going eastbound, one for westbound traffic and a bottom level for transit.
Ford has previously said a feasibility study will determine the length.
The province issued a request for proposals for the study in the spring and has not yet selected a proponent, but the government appears to be forging ahead with plans.
Global News and CBC reported this week that documents obtained under freedom-of-information requests show the government was looking at the idea as far back as 2019, but shelved it in 2021.
Global reports that an analysis of the tunnel idea several years ago mentions a risk of "roadway collapse."

'Clean water is secret ingredient of Guernsey oysters'

Guernsey's clean, disease-free water is the secret ingredient behind an island's global reputation for high-quality oysters, according to the owners of a hatchery. Guernsey Sea Farms' co-founder Mark Dravers said the "blue economy" - sustainable marine businesses - had become "very fashionable" and had contributed to farm gaining millions of customers around the world. The farm, based in a disused quarry in northern Guernsey, produces juvenile oysters which are then grown to full size once shipped. He said the island's clean water is "really important" for achieving paperwork to certify exports as disease-free, which is a "unique selling point". Co-founder Penny Dravers said the farm shipped "tens of millions of oysters" around the world, including to Canada and Peru. "People often confuse us with Herm oysters," Mrs Dravers said, "but in fact we don't produce the final product... the oyster that you'll get at a restaurant." When they send shipments to places such as South Africa, they can have a million oysters in a single polystyrene box, weighing about 10 kilos. "We'll have a million there and that could be worth £10,000," Mr Dravers said. The couple believe the reason customers buy from them is because of "the reputation of Guernsey waters". Mrs Dravers said the farm had strict biosecurity procedures in place to protect the water quality and oysters. Visitors have to go through a detailed biosecurity induction on arrival, as well as a "water bath that people have to walk through". Mr Dravers said the farm did not import any oysters in order to maintain biosecurity, despite the island's waters having no native oysters. He said they also had controls in place to protect against invasive species, such as filtered and ultraviolet treated water. After more than 40 years in the business, the couple have started to take a more hands-off approach and hand over the reins to "the next generation", Mr Dravers said. "We're really pleased to show people that there's something going on in Guernsey that isn't just finance," he said. Canadian Tire Q2 sales climb, but profit dips amid investment in growth strategy

Canadian Tire's ( sales showed resilience in the second quarter, yet expenses related to its new growth strategy hampered earnings. As at 10:41 a.m. ET, shares were trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange at $171.50, down 7.35 per cent. 'Customer confidence showed signs of recovery from March lows in the face of continued uncertainty,' said CEO Greg Hicks, on the Toronto-based retailer's earnings call Thursday morning. Canadian Tire reported second-quarter revenue of $4.2 billion, up 5.2 per cent compared to the same period last year. Same-store sales, which exclude newly opened locations, rose 5.6 per cent overall. At Canadian Tire, same-store sales climbed 6.4 per cent, driven largely by seasonal and gardening products, while Mark's increased one per cent and SportChek rose 3.9 per cent. However, the company's profit took a hit, largely due to the sale of its former Helly Hansen brand and a new, four-year growth strategy called True North, which was unveiled in March. The retail giant says its net income attributable to shareholders fell to $168.2 million or $2.04 per diluted share this quarter, from $207.7 million or $3.56 per diluted share a year ago. The Truth North strategy includes new, modernized store concepts, expansion of the company's Triangle Rewards program through partnerships with RBC and WestJet, and an enhanced go-to-market approach. The company has committed over $2 billion to the strategy and expects the benefits to start materializing through 2026. Year-to-date, the retailer has refreshed 14 Canadian Tire retail stores, and opened one new Mark's and SportChek store, respectively, Hicks says. The company enhanced a total of 21 stores in 2024, with more than 30 planned for the rest of the year. The Truth North plan also includes reducing corporate staff, an exercise that began last week, to improve agility and better compete with global competitors. 'We have been in a period of meaningful reductions designed to remove layers and drive decision-making closer to our customers,' Hicks said. The company expects restructuring and reductions to be mostly completed in its third quarter. Hicks did not disclose how many employees would be impacted. RBI reports $2.41bn revenue in Q2 2025

Restaurant Brands International (RBI), the parent of fast-food chains including Burger King and Tim Hortons, has reported total revenues of $2.41bn in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, compared to $2.08bn in the same period lof the previous year. The company experienced a 5.3% increase in system-wide sales compared to the previous year, with international sales showing 9.8% growth. Despite these gains, RBI's financials indicate a mixed performance. The company reported a 5.7% organic growth in adjusted operating income, which amounted to $668m. However, income from operations for the quarter saw a significant reduction of 27.2% to $483m, down from $663m in the same quarter of 2024. Adjusted diluted earnings per share also saw an improvement, climbing 9.2% to $0.94. The firm's comparable sales rose to 2.4%, with Burger King International and Tim Hortons Canada contributing increases of 4.1% and 3.6%, respectively. Net income from continuing operations followed a similar downward trend, dropping 34.1% to $264m from the previous year's $399m. Net income attributable to common shareholders was reported at $189m. Breaking down performance by segments, Burger King's sales increased 1%, with US comparable sales up by 1.5%. Tim Hortons reported a 3.9% growth in system-wide sales. Popeyes saw 1.6% growth, while Firehouse Subs led with a 6.3% increase in system-wide sales. Despite the challenges faced in Q2, RBI is predicting a more than 8% organic growth in adjusted operating income for the entirety of 2025. RBI CEO Josh Kobza stated: "We made great progress in the second quarter advancing our strategic priorities, with improved sales trends and strong execution led by our two largest businesses, Tim Hortons and International. 'Across the system, we're seeing strong franchisee alignment, impactful marketing, and focused operational initiatives drive meaningful improvements in the guest experience.' In February 2025, RBI expanded its portfolio by acquiring Burger King China from its local franchisee for $158m. For Q1 2025, RBI reported a net income attributable to common shareholders of $159m, lower than the $230m recorded for the corresponding period of the previous year. May 2024 saw RBI finalising the acquisition of Carrols Restaurant Group for $1bn. It represents the largest collection of Burger King franchises in the US.
