'Netflix's new medical docuseries is not for those with a weak stomach'
A brand new medical documentary series is a truly distressing watch that will linger in my memory forever - and it's ready to stream now on Netflix.
We've all witnessed Channel 4's 24 Hours in A&E and the immense strains our Accident and Emergency departments endure. But now, a fresh series about the NHS surpasses even that, and it's something everyone should see.
Critical: Between Life and Death premieres today (July 23) and highlights London's trauma units as they confront intense situations and strive to save those who are critically injured. From polytrauma patients to life or death surgeries, the documentary covers it all.
Netflix fans 'can't sleep' after watching twisted film that streaming giant is taking down
Netflix series 'so addictive' fans binge watch in one night
Tracking front line workers across 21 days with 40 cameras, Critical doesn't shy away, and it's certainly not afraid to show you everything. It's the kind of programme that stays with you and reinforces the fact that our NHS heroes are indeed just that - heroes.
The first episode features a massive tragedy following a fairground ride malfunction in Brockwell Park, London in 2024. The ride failure resulted in several people, including children, being injured as emergency services rushed to the scene, reports the Express.
Now, in an unprecedented behind-the-scenes insight, we hear from victims, their families and the emergency services involved. With footage of the ride malfunction and the intense details, it feels like you're right there in the hospital with them.
I can honestly say I will never go on a fairground ride again. I've never been a fan of rides anyway, but knowing things can change in a single instant is terrifying. Critical: Between Life and Death has shown me a new perspective.
If you're squeamish, this programme might not be for you, but it's something everyone should try and watch. It certainly fosters a profound appreciation for those we often overlook.
The first episode plunges us directly into the thick of things, showcasing frontline workers, from initial call receivers to trauma department staff, all battling to prevent dire outcomes.
Advanced Paramedic Practitioner Rory, who assisted in orchestrating the emergency response from the operations centre, reflected: "They were having a nice day, and then very quickly that changed."
The episode also hears from the sister of one victim who was also at the fairground, who struggles to hold back the tears as she relives the harrowing experience.
The synopsis teases: "In London, a major trauma happens every 60 minutes, and for the NHS, each call is a race against time. Critical: Between Life and Death gets inside the minds of the dedicated trauma teams that hold our lives in their hands when the worst happens.
"From the makers of the award-winning 24 Hours in A&E and with exclusive access, 40 cameras are embedded for 21 days across the entire London Major Trauma System.
"The documentary series goes over the shoulder and under the scalpel to reveal not only the life-saving interventions but also the personal, emotional, and sometimes traumatic reasons that inspire those on the NHS frontline to do a job where every second counts."

Wolfenstein 3 hopes reignited as live action TV show is announced
Amazon is developing a live action series based on Wolfenstein, as it continues to expand its roster of video game adaptations. There are so many TV and film adaptations of video games currently in production it's hard to keep up, between new seasons of The Last Of Us, animated Splinter Cell shows, another Street Fighter movie, an OutRun adaptation from Michael Bay, and many others. There's a chance some of them will not see the light of day (Netflix's take on Tom Clancy's The Division appears to be one such casualty) but Amazon, following the success of Fallout, has given the green light to a slew of projects based on video games over recent years. And now another one has been added to the pile, with a series based on the grandaddy of all first person shooters. According to Variety, Amazon is in development on a Wolfenstein live action series. While plot details are being kept secret, the official logline just about sums it up: 'The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.' The show is being created, written, and executive produced by Patrick Somerville, who has a pretty strong CV. He previously created Netflix's Maniac starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, along with HBO miniseries Station Eleven, which was nominated for seven Emmys. Wolfenstein developer MachineGames is involved too, with the studio's co-founder Jerk Gustafsson serving as an executive producer, alongside Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham via Kilter Films. If you're unfamiliar, Wolfenstein is a series of games set in an alternate history of the Second World War. The first two games by Muse Software were 1981's Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, which had a top-down perspective and were a very early example of a stealth game. The games remained little known until id Software purchased the rights and made 1992's Wolfenstein 3D – the precursor to Doom and the first widely popular first person shooter. More Trending Today, the series is synonymous with developer MachineGames, who rebooted the series in 2014, with Wolfenstein: The New Order and its sequel Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. These featured much more storytelling and social commentary, while maintaining a heightened sense of absurdity, and are presumably what the TV show will be based on. A third mainline game in the series has been rumoured for some time but never officially announced, and it's unclear what the studio is working on now following Indiana Jones And The Great Circle. Although they have hinted at a Quake reboot (also an id Software property) multiple times. The Amazon adaptation implies there's now a greater chance of a third game coming to fruition, if it isn't already underway. Job listings in 2023 suggested another sequel was in the works, and Bethesda's former head of publishing, Pete Hines, was very keen on the idea, but the poor sales of Wolfenstein 2 and its spin-offs has always left a third title in doubt. This Wolfenstein series is one of many video game adaptations currently in the works at Amazon. Along with Fallout and Secret Level, which are both getting second seasons, the company has green-lit shows based on Mass Effect, God Of War, and tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000 with Henry Cavill. Coronation Street actress lands part in rival soap after splitting from co-star
Tisha Merry, who is best known for having played Steph Britton on Coronation Street, has been cast in a special edition of Hollyoaks. Former Coronation Street star Tisha Merry has been cast in Hollyoaks. The actress, 32, became known for starring as Steph Britton on ITV's flagship soap from 2013 until 2018 but has now landed the part of Gemma in Channel 4's post-watershed version of continuing drama series in time for the show's 30th anniversary and will be linked to Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas), who is making a return to the programme. She said: "I'm absolutely over the moon to be joining the cast of Hollyoaks. It's a fabulous opportunity and an incredible time to join as they celebrate their 30th birthday week." Describing her new alter-ego's bubbly personality, she added: "Gemma is flirty, feisty, and the kind of woman you'd want as your best friend… but never your enemy. She's bold, unpredictable, and trust me when I say, she'll be entering with a bang. I can't wait for you all to meet her." Meanwhile, Jamie, who is also known for his role as Jake Stone on EastEnders, is making another comeback to Hollyoaks ahead of the milestone teased that the special will see him as his alter-ego 'starts afresh' following his split from Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe). He said: "Warren has been busy since you last saw him, wanting to rebuild his empire and start afresh after the heartbreak with Mercedes. We'll be filming a lot on location and they're pulling out all the stops so I'm looking forward to it." Little is known about the plot of the episode, but Jorgie Porter will also make a comeback as Theresa McQueen following her maternity leave from the programme, and she said: "It's really exciting to be a part of Laters, I've been in so many over the years and they're always my favourite – hopefully I get a swear word this time. "Theresa is scheming with an unlikely business partner and its fun to see her living life on the edge again. It's incredible to time my return with the Hollyoaks 30th birthday week too, I couldn't miss it." During her time as Bistro waitress Steph on Coronation Street, Tisha saw the character through a number of storylines after being introduced as the best friend of Katy Armstong (Georgia May Foote). Amongst the most prominent were her becoming a victim of revenge porn at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, and she later struck up a relationship with Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth), before he was killed by Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre). The builder also murdered Steph's brother Luke Britton, and she made her last appearance when attending his funeral. But away from the cameras, Tisha also found love with her co-star Alan Halsall, who still plays Tyrone Dobbs to this day. They were in a relationship for five years but announced announced their split in February 2024 after five years of together. At the time, a source told The Sun: 'Alan and Tisha ... started to drift apart and feel the pressure of making their relationship work get on top of them. They realised they weren't on the same page and splitting up felt like the best option. They've been focusing on themselves and surrounding themselves with their own friends. Tisha moved out of Alan's home around a month ago and is throwing herself into work.' Before dating Tisha, Alan was married to former Coronation Street star Lucy-Jo Hudson. The actress played Katy Harris on the soap from 2002 until 2005 before going on to play Donna-Marie Quinn on Hollyoaks. They were married in 2009 and welcomed a daughter together - but the romance collapsed and they were divorced in 2018. Lucy-Jo has since welcomed a second child - a son named Carter Ray whose father is Lewis Devine. While Alan and Lucy-Jo co-parent their daughter, Lucy-Jo has spoken out about how difficult she sometimes finds this - particularly when Alan would take their daughter away on holiday. She wrote on social media last year: "It's been almost 6 years of me having to share my Sienna, and you'd think I'd be used to it by now but I'm not!" And former I'm A Me Out Of Here! contestant Alan,42, who has starred as Tyrone on the cobbles since 1998, recently looked loved-up with a new girlfriend Ellie Dolan as he attended the wedding of Corrie's Jack P Shepherd over the weekend. And by attending the Celebrity Big Brother winner's wedding, it looks as though their budding romance appears to be going from strength to strength. At the time, a source explained to the Mirror: "Alan is really happy. Ellie is a great girl and they have lots of common. And she gets on so well with Sienna, which is so important to Alan. Sienna is his world."
