Speaker Appavu backs actor Kamal Haasan in ‘Kannada came form Tamil' row

The Hindu3 days ago

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu has backed actor Kamal Haasan, who had asserted recently that 'Kannada came from Tamil'.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday after participating in a function, Mr. Appavu said the people of then Madras Presidency, which comprised Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, Karnataka and a part of Orissa spoke Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Tulu and Oriya and it was propagated then that Tamil and all other south Indian languages were born from Sanskrit.
However, this longstanding myth was smashed by Bishop Caldwell of Northern Ireland, who learnt all the south Indian languages and even Sanskrit and researched about these languages for 18 years.
In his book 'A comparative grammar of Dravidian or South Indian Family of Languages' in 1856, Bishop Caldwell, who obtained a degree in a university in Ireland, had declared that Tamil was one among the first three languages of the world.
'In his book, Bishop Caldwell, after 18-year-long research and learning 18 languages, has written that Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tulu, Oriya etc. were born from Tamil. Hence, ancient Tamil obtained classical status thanks to the efforts taken by late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. And, a statue was erected for Bishop Caldwell in Chennai and a memorial has been created for the late scholar. So, what Kamal Haasan said in this connection is right,' Mr. Appavu said.
The Speaker said the accused in the Anna University sexual assault case had been convicted within the shortest possible time only due to the sincere efforts taken by the Tamil Nadu Government to expedite the trial of the case.
'Justice has been done to the victims of infamous Pollachi sexual assault case only after the present Government expedited the trial of the case. Now, the the accused in the Anna University sexual assault case has been found guilty. Everyone expects that the accused would get maximum punishment for this heinous crime. This has instilled confidence in the minds of the women, girls and the minors that they would get justice under the present government,' Mr. Appavu said.

Hate Speech Case: Abbas Ansari disqualified from Assembly, Rajbhar says will appeal in HC

A day after a court in Mau sentenced MLA Abbas Ansari to two years of imprisonment in a three-year-old hate speech case, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Secretariat on Sunday declared his Assembly seat, Mau Sadar, vacant. A senior official of the Vidhan Sabha Secretariat said Ansari, an MLA of SBSP, has been disqualified from the Assembly as per the Representation of the People Act. 'A letter has been sent to the Election Commission in this regard,' the official added. Abbas Ansari, the son of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari who died in Banda jail last year, is the sixth MLA in the present House to face disqualification. The five others who lost their Assembly membership since 2022 are Azam Khan, his son Abdullah Azam Khan, Irfan Solanki—all elected on Samajwadi Party tickets—along with Vikram Saini and Ramdular Gond of the BJP. Meanwhile, SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar, who is a Cabinet minister in the BJP government in the state, said they would file an appeal against the conviction of Abbas Ansari. 'He (Abbas Ansari) is an MLA of our party. The court has pronounced its judgment. We will move the high court to present our side,' PTI quoted Rajbhar as saying. Following the disqualification of Abbas Ansari, the SBSP will have five MLAs in the 403-member Legislative Assembly. Abbas had made the remarks at a public meeting during the 2022 Assembly election campaign. The organiser of the event, Mansoor Ahmed Ansari, was also convicted in the case and was sentenced to six months in jail. Abbas's younger brother, Umar Ansari, is also an accused in the case. However, he is being tried separately. Both Abbas and Mansoor have been granted bail following their sentencing. According to police, Abbas and his brother had allegedly threatened to 'teach a lesson' to the administrative officials of Mau after the election. They were booked for criminal intimidation and promoting religious enmity among others.

DMK launched ‘Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' enrolment drive

Madurai: Gearing up for the 2026 assembly elections, DMK president and chief minister M K Stalin launched an enrolment drive titled 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' at the party's general council meeting held at Uthangudi on Sunday. Unveiling the campaign, Stalin urged party cadres to enrol at least 30% of voters in each polling booth as DMK members through a massive door-to-door outreach. "The welfare schemes of the Dravidian-model govt have reached every household. At least one beneficiary lives in each home. That trust must now translate into political unity. We must ensure DMK's presence in every street, every house," Stalin told the cadres. Reading out a special resolution announcing the drive, Stalin instructed the functionaries to achieve their membership enrolment targets in two months. Earlier, the general council passed 27 other resolutions, many of them criticising the BJP for Waqf Act, Hindi imposition and delimitation. DMK also hit out at BJP for allegedly undermining Tamil heritage by rejecting the findings of the Keeladi excavations. A resolution said railway projects in TN were hit because of discriminatory fund allocation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Click Here! Another resolution urged the Centre to revoke gold loan restrictions, which 'unfairly burden women and economically weaker sections.' Though there were speculations that deputy CM Udhayanidhi would be elevated to a new party post, there was only a resolution lauding him for his contribution to party's growth. During the meeting, DMK announced that two new party wings would be created - one for persons with disabilities, and another for academicians.
