Bob Costas wins Baseball Digest lifetime achievement award
Bob Costas has won the fifth Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Baseball Digest.
The longtime broadcaster was honored Thursday with an annual distinction that 'recognizes a living individual whose career has been spent in or around Major League Baseball and who has made significant contributions to the game.'
Willie Mays won the inaugural award in 2021, followed by Vin Scully (2022), Joe Torre (2023) and Dusty Baker (2024).
'Baseball hasn't just been a big part of my career. It's been a big and ongoing part of my life,' Costas said in a news release. 'Someone once said of me, 'He is a citizen of the game.' I hope that was true. I hope I have meant something to the game. I know it has meant a great deal to me."
Costas has hosted or called seven World Series, 10 League Championship Series and eight All-Star Games. He's been with MLB Network since its inception in 2009. He stopped doing play-by-play following the 2024 postseason but will continue to contribute to the network's coverage.
He received the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award in 2018 for major contributions to baseball broadcasting.
'As one of the most decorated sports broadcasters of all-time, Bob Costas' love of baseball and passion for the game has always been evident," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "Bob has been a part of some of the most important moments in MLB history. His vast baseball knowledge and experience has allowed him to provide thoughtful commentary and valuable historical context throughout his career working with MLB's broadcast partners and MLB Network.'
Costas was chosen in voting by a 19-member panel from a list of 10 finalists that also included Terry Francona, Sandy Koufax, Tony La Russa, Jim Leyland, Lou Piniella and Bud Selig, among others.

Reds rely on the long ball, sweep Diamondbacks
June 8 - Matt McLain hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning to help the Cincinnati Reds complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks with a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jose Trevino also homered for the Reds to wrap up their fourth sweep of the season. Reds starter Brady Singer allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked three. The game was delayed by rain for 30 minutes with no outs in the top of the sixth. Scott Barlow was on the mound for the Reds when the game resumed and he retired the side in the sixth. Taylor Rogers (2-2) did the same in the seventh and eighth, and Tony Santillan pitched the ninth for his second save. Arizona starter Zac Gallen (4-8) returned to the mound after the delay and departed after giving up the home run to McLain. He allowed four runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking three. Eugenio Suarez homered for the second straight game for the Diamondbacks, who came into the series riding a four-game winning streak. Suarez hit a high fly to right-center field that carried over the fence with one out in the second to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead. Arizona's Alek Thomas led off the third with a single up the middle, was sacrificed to second by Jose Herrera and scored on a line-drive single up the middle by Corbin Carroll to extend the lead to 2-0. Encarnacion-Strand homered for the third straight game when he reached for a low curveball with one out in the fourth and lined it over the left field fence to cut the lead to 2-1. Trevino led off the fifth by hitting the second pitch over the fence in left-center field to tie the score 2-2. Gallen returned after the delay and he walked Elly De La Cruz with one out after getting ahead 0-2. He then gave up a single to Encarnacion-Strand, but De La Cruz was picked off second and Will Benson grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Bo Naylor helps Guardians slip past Astros 4-2
June 8 - Bo Naylor hit a home run among his three hits as the Cleveland Guardians snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the visiting Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. It was the second three-hit game of the season for Naylor and seventh of his career. Gabriel Arias doubled twice and scored a run for Cleveland. Cade Smith (2-2) struck out three during 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Emmanuel Clase pitched around two singles in the ninth to pick up his 14th save. Jake Meyers went 4-for-4 with a stolen base and Cam Smith had a two-run double for Houston, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Steven Okert (1-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk over one inning while striking out two. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Naylor's eighth home run of the season, a 429-foot drive to right, two batters after Arias doubled. It was Naylor's first extra-base hit against a left-handed pitcher this season. Houston tied it 2-2 in the seventh on a two-run double into the gap in left-center by Smith, driving in Yainer Diaz and Meyers, who singled. The Guardians went back in front 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of a throwing error by Okert in the process. Johnathan Rodriguez led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Nolan Jones. Naylor followed with a bloop single to left to put runners at first and second. Will Wilson then laid down a sacrifice bunt but Okert threw wildly to first allowing Jones to score what would prove to be the winning run and Naylor to advance to third. Steven Kwan followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Naylor. Houston got the tying runs on base in the ninth against Clase with back-to-back one-out singles from Diaz and Meyers. Rays complete comeback to take series with Marlins
June 8 - Brandon Lowe's eighth-inning sacrifice fly capped a comeback for the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, as they beat the visiting Miami Marlins 3-2. Yandy Diaz had a hand in each of the runs for the Rays as the designated hitter went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. His eighth-inning double chased reliever Valente Bellozo (1-3). Pinch-runner Jose Caballero stole third off Calvin Faucher, allowing him to score on Lowe's fly ball to shallow center. Edwin Uceta (5-1) pitched a perfect eighth and ninth with three strikeouts for the Rays, who have won five of their last six games. Rookie Heriberto Hernandez enjoyed the first three-hit day of his major league career, but it was not enough for the Marlins as they fell for the sixth time in their last seven contests. One day after an 11-10 Marlins win in 10 innings, Sunday's rubber match of the three-game series was a pitchers' duel between Miami's bullpen and Tampa Bay starter Drew Rasmussen, who entered with a 23-inning shutout streak, and three relievers. It took just three Marlins batters, aided by a Rays fielding blunder, to end that streak. Edwards led off with a single, and he managed to get to third on Jesus Sanchez's bouncer up the middle.
