TVLine Asks: Would The Handmaid's Tale Weaponized Wedding Cake Have Worked on You?
Confused? We'll back up a moment. This week's Handmaid's Tale found Elisabeth Moss' June and Samira Wiley's Moira back in Gilead and undercover as handmaids in order to lead their enslaved sisters in mass murder. The wedding of Serena Joy to High Commander Wharton provided the perfect opportunity: June and Moira surreptitiously distributed blades to the scarlet-robed women during the church ceremony, then waited for the reception's guests to eat the cake that Rita had secretly drugged. Hours later, as the commanders slept at home in a medicated stupor, the handmaids spread out all over with the intent of killing Gilead's leaders in their sleep. June got the party going by offing Commander Bell, who'd been abusing Janine, his new handmaid. The plan to drug the cake, while brilliant, did have one flaw: What if a commander (or 10!) didn't eat it? Maybe he was too full, or too drunk, or more of a pie guy? Haven't we all been to weddings where the dessert was dry or not a flavor we liked? And did the potential takedown of Gilead hinge on the very unlikely scenario in which 99 percent of attendees ate the cake?
When we asked Handmaid's executive producer Warren Littlefield about it, he chuckled and very gently informed us that we were no fun.
'It's part of the ritual of a wedding, right?' he said, laughing. 'Even those of us who are like, 'Oh, I'm on a diet, I can't have cake' — you have a little cake, right? That's part of the pact of your guests at a wedding.' We humbly counter that such a pact should crumble in the presence of overbaked sponge, but onward!

The Traitors Announces All-Civilian Version to Air on NBC — Apply Now!
The Traitors fans, now's your chance to do a little backstabbing of your own. NBC will air an all-civilian version of the hit reality competition, TVLine has learned. Typically, The Traitors — which airs on streamer Peacock — features celebrities competing for the cash prize, but this time, ordinary fans will play the game, with Alan Cumming returning as host. (Other international versions of The Traitors, including the UK and Australia, feature everyday people as contestants.) 'With our resident host and gameplay master of ceremonies, Alan Cumming, on board to introduce complete strangers to new epic missions and twisted gameplay, this new version for NBC offers a unique opportunity for the cast and audience to meet each other for the first time and we know it will be incredible to watch.' For those uninitiated, The Traitors brings its players to a remote Scottish castle, where a small number of them are secretly designated 'traitors,' tasked with 'murdering,' or eliminating from the game, one of their fellow players each night. But the other players, dubbed the 'faithful,' can get rid of the traitors by voting out one of their own each night at the round table. At the end of the game, if the faithful get rid of all the traitors, they split the cash prize — but if even one traitor remains, they take home all the money. Debuting in the Netherlands in 2021, The Traitors has spawned more than 30 (!) international editions, with the U.S. version bowing on Peacock in 2023. The first season mixed reality TV celebrities like Survivor alum Cirie Fields with everyday people, but the subsequent two seasons have been all celebrities. The show has become a runaway hit for Peacock, winning the Emmy last year for best reality competition. Season 4 of The Traitors is expected to air on Peacock early next year — with a cast including former Real Housewife Lisa Rinna, actor Michael Rapaport and football mom Donna Kelce — and the show has already been renewed for a fifth season. Chicago Fire's Daniel Kyri Returning for ‘Limited Time' in Season 14 — Get Details
Surprise! Firehouse 51 isn't saying goodbye to Darren Ritter just yet. Daniel Kyri, who exited Chicago Fire as a series regular along with Jake Lockett at the end of Season 13, has shared that he'll return in Season 14 as Ritter, albeit briefly. Ritter was not formally written out of the series at the end of Season 13, presumably leaving the door open for Kyri to return and wrap up his character's storyline. Back in May, showrunner Andrew Newman told TVLine that they didn't have a set plan for addressing his departure, but that there were 'lots of possibilities there.' 'We're going to play with all this and see what we get and how much time we get with Daniel, who we love, and the character, who we love,' she said. The Season 13 finale did hint at CFD layoffs, which Newman acknowledged as a potential explanation for some character exits. The layoffs twist 'wasn't even done intentionally for that, but because it's so in the zeitgeist, people coming in and gutting departments and gutting places, it's very real to the CFD.' 'We're going to have a lot of turnover,' Newman added, 'and a lot craziness going on in the CFD from the top, where people are being cut and moved, and everything's going to get shaken up next season.' What Will Chicago Fire Season 14 Be About? During the Chicago Fire Season 13 finale, Herrmann admitted that a desk job, like chief, is not for him and went to Commissioner Grissom with a proposition. Herrmann stepped down to be a regular firefighter so that his friend Mouch could step up as Engine's lieutenant. The efficiency expert's warning in an earlier episode that layoffs and forced resignations are coming was on top of Herrmann's mind as he made his decision. As previously confirmed, Chicago Fire Season 14 will premiere Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 9/8c, sandwiched between Chicago Med Season 11 and Chicago P.D. Season 13.
