Guwahati civic body launches drive to install 60 high-mast LED lights
:
Guwahati Municipal Corporation
(GMC) has embarked on an ambitious journey to illuminate the city with 60 high-mast LED lights, ensuring one such light in each ward across the city.
GMC on Thursday inaugurated two new high-mast LED lights at Kahilipara and Lokhra. This comprehensive lighting drive is being implemented in collaboration with Guwahati Unnayan Company Ltd. (GUCL) as part of the city's ongoing modernisation efforts.
The project has gained significant momentum with recent inaugurations of high-mast LED lights at multiple locations, including Hengrabari Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) ground, Geeta Nagar field, Bapuji Nagar at Noonmati, Narengi Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) field, and Birkuchi LP School at Narengi. These new installations bring the total number of operational high-mast LED lights to 50, while construction of the remaining 10 lights is currently underway and will be completed within the next four months.
The current initiative builds upon the existing infrastructure, as the city already has 53 operational high-mast LED street lights. Once the new project is completed, Guwahati will have a robust network of 113 high-mast LED lights strategically positioned throughout the urban landscape.
GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania emphasised the transformative impact of this initiative, stating, "This comprehensive lighting project represents our commitment to making Guwahati a safer, more accessible city for all residents. The installation of high-mast LED lights in every ward, including our cremation grounds, demonstrates our dedication to providing dignified public infrastructure that serves our citizens around the clock."
Sarania said GMC is planning to install high-mast LED lights in around 29 cremation grounds across the city. This initiative aims to provide well-lit and secure environments during evening and night-time rituals, contributing to cleaner and more respectful public spaces for citizens during sensitive times.
Counsellor of ward number 58, Gauri Borah, said, "In my ward, the high-mast LED light is installed inside the compound of Birkuchi LP School. Earlier in that area, due to the absence of proper lighting, individuals were seen getting involved in unsocial activities like drinking alcohol and gambling, etc., but now I'm hopeful that the high-mast light will prevent such activities."
A resident of Narengi, Himanjit Pathak, said the installation of high-mast LED lights in his locality was much needed to ensure public safety. However, he added that one such light in a ward is not enough; more such lights would be necessary.
The high-mast LED installation is part of GMC's broader lighting programme, which has already made substantial progress in transforming the city's illumination infrastructure. The program's first phase successfully installed 20,657 LED street lights across various streets and by-lanes throughout Guwahati, establishing a foundation for improved urban lighting.
The second phase of the lighting programme is currently in progress, with 5,000 LED lights already installed out of a total target of 12,000 lights planned for this phase.

10 Kanwariyas injured as tractor-trolley overturns in Akola
Akola: A tractor-trolley carrying Kanwariyas to fetch holy water from the Purna River overturned at Bhim Nagar Chowk after losing balance and crashed into an electric pole on Sunday night. At least 10 Kanwariyas were injured in the accident, with two to three reported to be in critical condition, said police. According to eyewitnesses, nearly 30 to 35 devotees were on the tractor-trolley for the state's largest Kanwar Yatra held ahead of the last Shravan Somwar. The hit to the electric pole snapped the power supply in the area. Due to the power outage, police and local residents faced difficulties in carrying out rescue operations. Police initially shifted all the injured to the Government Medical College (GMC), from where they were referred to private hospitals. On being informed, BJP MLA Randhir Savarkar, MP Anoop Dhote and local BJP netas visited the hospitals and assured to bear the medical expenses. Source-level waste segregation to be mandatory across all GMC wards
1 2 Guwahati: Waste management has long been a subject of debate in the city, with frequent dissatisfaction over collection practices that often led to garbage being dumped directly at landfill sites. However, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has now renewed its efforts with a simple yet crucial step, which is segregation at the source-level, with strong emphasis on utilising wastes for productive purposes. The GMC is aiming to work towards adopting smarter methods of waste management, equipped with the necessary facilities to support the process. According to GMC commissioner MS Lakshmi Priya, efforts are underway to spread awareness and make source segregation mandatory in every ward. She said mixing waste first and then attempting segregation becomes a time-consuming and challenging task. "It is a part of our campaign, 'Saaf Guwahati Sikun Guwahati', where we will be attempting to target the crucial level, and make people aware that different wastes need to be segregated separately, otherwise it becomes a problem," the commissioner added. In line with the solid waste management rules, 2016, the commissioner has laid special emphasis on wet and sanitary wastes, which would be collected daily. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Alabama Residents With Credit Card Debt Could Be In For Loan-Free Relief Forbes Learn More Undo Meanwhile dry waste will be collected on specific days for residential areas. "Wet wastes such as kitchen scraps, fruit and vegetable peels, and leftover food will be collected daily, along with sanitary waste like used napkins, diapers, and bandages. Dry waste, including paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, fabric, leather, and metal cans, and domestic hazardous waste such as used batteries, expired medicines, and empty paint cans will be collected twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays," she said. Sanitary waste, if not handled properly, can pose serious risks to both waste collectors and the environment, which is why the rules mandate its scientific disposal. The civic body is also focusing on wet and organic waste management. The GMC plans to utilise its five-metric-tonne capacity bio-methanation-cum-electricity generation plant, which until now had been operating with just about one tonne of waste. With greater coordination from hotels, restaurants, and vendors, officials are confident that the plant will now receive adequate waste input to run at full capacity. Guntur civic body plans to plant five lakh saplings this monsoon
Guntur Municipal Corporation is planning to plant over five lakh saplings across the city during the ongoing monsoon. It has already planted about 35,000 saplings between June and August so far, GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu told The Hindu. Mr. Srinivasulu said the GMC Standing Committee and Council have approved a proposal. The saplings are being procured from AP Greening Corporation, Forest Department nurseries and private nurseries. GMC will promote home composting covering 75,000 houses, and clustering composting covering 50,000 households to ensure manure to these plants. Mr. Srinivasulu said they are encouraging schools, colleges, commercial establishments, NGOs, housing societies, and individuals to plant the saplings. The civic body is also planning to have ornamental plants along major roads. Local women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and residential welfare associations would care for them. Moreover, parks in the city will be developed with medicinal plants. Stating that the GMC is covered under NCAP (National Clean Air Programme), the Commissioner said the local body is planning to reduce carbon emissions by promoting greenery.
