An ‘honored' Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond movie: ‘To me, he's sacred territory'
Denis Villeneuve is stepping out of the deserts of Dune and into the spy world of Bond.
The four-time Oscar nominee is set to direct and executive produce the next James Bond installment for Amazon MGM Studios. Tanya Lapointe joins him as an executive producer, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman continuing as producers. The role of the next James Bond has yet to be cast.

Acknowledging the weight of the project, Villeneuve said today, "Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.'
Villeneuve has four Oscar nominations under his belt: for directing Arrival (2016), writing and producing Dune: Part One (2021), and producing Dune: Part Two (2024). He has yet to win.
James Bond movies have claimed several Academy Awards through the years, including Best Sound Effects for Goldfinger (1965), Best Visual Effects for Thunderball (1966), Best Song and Best Sound Editing for Skyfall (2013), Best Song for Spectre (2016), and Best Song for No Time to Die (2022).
"We are honored that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond's next chapter," said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. "He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself. From Blade Runner 2049 to Arrival to the Dune films, he has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and — most importantly — the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theaters. James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007's next adventure.'
Pascal and Heyman said jointly, "Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it's ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker."
In December, the Wall Street Journal suggested that longtime James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and Amazon MGM Studios were "at an impasse" over the future of the spy franchise, however it was later revealed in February that the studio had negotiated creative control in a new deal.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said: 'I would deeply love to one day make a James Bond movie. It's a character that I've been with — like everybody — since my childhood. I have massive affection for Bond. It would be a big challenge for people to try and reboot it.' 'It's true that it would be a dream to do 007. I don't know if such a thing would happen, but it would be a privilege. At the end of the day, that would be pure cinematic joy.' Now that dream is real. Villeneuve will helm the next Bond film, though he won't be working with Daniel Craig, who he once called the 'ultimate James Bond.' Casting is still up in the air, though rumors have swirled around Dune 's Timothée Chalamet, especially following Amazon's announcement. Despite being locked into production on Dune: Messiah , which is set to release December 2026, Villeneuve still found a way to make space for 007. And he's treating it like sacred ground. New film academy members include Danielle Deadwyler, Ariana Grande, Jason Momoa, Conan O'Brien
NEW YORK (AP) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited 534 new members to its organization on Thursday, adding recent Oscar nominees and many more to Hollywood's most exclusive club. The newest class of Oscar voters includes a number of stars like Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, Danielle Deadwyler and Andrew Scott. They, along with filmmakers, below-the-line professionals and executives will bring the film academy's membership total to 11,120, with voting members numbering 10,143. That's the largest membership ever for the academy. Since the #OscarsSoWhite backlash, the film academy has added thousands of members to swell its ranks and diversify its voting body. This year's class is 41% female, 45% from underrepresented communities and 55% from outside the U.S. Those new members will make the entire academy 35% women, 22% from underrepresented communities and 21% international. 'We are thrilled to invite this esteemed class of artists, technologists, and professionals to join the Academy,' said academy chief executive Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang in a statement. 'Through their commitment to filmmaking and to the greater movie industry, these exceptionally talented individuals have made indelible contributions to our global filmmaking community.' Invitations went out to 91 Oscar nominees and 26 winners, including best actress winner Mikey Madison ("Anora") and best supporting actor winner Kieran Culkin ("A Real Pain"). Recent nominees who were invited include Ariana Grande, Jeremy Strong, Sebastian Stan and Monica Barbara.
