Mystery after man dies from carpark assault
Elmars Kalejs, 53, was found by a member of the public in the carpark adjacent to the Settlers' Common Environmental Centre in Bedfordale about 12.30pm on April 18.
He was lying unconscious near the driver's side door of his silver Holden Commodore sedan, with clear and significant head injuries.
Mr Kalejs was transported to hospital in a serious condition with head injuries and broken ribs.
He died two months later in hospital. Homicide detectives have now launched a renewed investigation into the incident, specifically seeking any information over the 24 hours from midday April 17 to the same time on April 18.
CCTV released by police captures Mr Kalejs walking through a shopping centre car park on April 18, dressed in a blue and black chequered shirt and black hat, carrying a black backpack.
Detective Senior Sergeant Jarrod Manson said even the smallest piece of information could hold the key to providing some answers for Mr Kalejs' family.
'Somebody out there may know what happened, and exactly how Mr Kalejs sustained these injuries. We want to find that explanation and we believe that's possible with the help of the community,' Senior Sergeant Manson, from the state's Homicide Squad, said on Tuesday. Senior Sergeant Manson told the ABC police still did not know how Mr Kalejs sustained his injuries but assured there was no evidence to suggest any risk to the public.
'We understand (Mr Kalejs) was sleeping in his car at this location and there's been no other incidents that we're aware of, where someone's been injured in such a manner,' he said.

She added it had been a hard few months due to the 53-year-old not being able to meet his third and final grandson, describing Mr Kalejs as a 'loving, gentle man' who 'lived off the land'.
'Please just help, if you know anything it's OK, we forgive anyone who's done it. Just please come forward,' she told the ABC.
'We just need closure as a family.'

Nearly half of SA's greyhound racing recommendations implemented in a year
An independent inspector monitoring major reforms into South Australia's greyhound industry says half of the recommendations of an inquiry are underway, but more work still needs to be done. The industry was given two years to improve its standards or risk being banned in SA following reports by ABC into dogs being allegedly abused, which resulted in trainers being suspended. The revelations triggered an independent inquiry into the state's greyhound industry, led by former Victorian police commissioner Graham Ashton who handed down a series of recommendations in 2023. Former Victoria Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sal Perna, was appointed SA's greyhound industry reform inspector in May 2024 to oversee the implementation of those recommendations. In his one-year progress report, Mr Perna said of the 87 recommendations made, 41 are complete and one is partially fulfilled. He told ABC Radio Adelaide one of the biggest reforms achieved was prohibiting surgical artificial insemination, ahead of a nationwide ban in effect from the start of next year. "That meant changes to something people have been doing for a long time and training new vets to be able to do it," Mr Perna said. "It's also something they are looking at to introduce nationally next year but South Australia, because of the recommendations, needed to do that quickly and do that before the other states." Mr Perna said more work needs to be done on recommendations that improve the welfare of greyhounds. "A lot of the aspects of exercise and socialisation and, you know, access to space to move in and fresh water and the size of the kennels and more rehoming facilities — they're are the things that'd take time in the next 12 months," he said. The completed reforms included increasing the frequency of drug testing, publishing injury data, developing a staff code of conduct and banning lay betting, which is betting on a dog to lose. Another recommendation directed Greyhound Racing South Australia to ensure at least one of their directors come from a background in animal welfare or integrity. Former ICAC director of investigations, Andrew Baker, has been hired as the organisation's general manager for welfare. In his report, Mr Perna said he has engaged with more than 300 greyhound racing stakeholders and participants and visited all five racetracks in SA. SA Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Emily Bourke, said she has been receiving monthly updates on the progress of the recommendations. Ms Bourke said the welfare of greyhounds is at the centre of the reforms. "We're almost at halfway of meeting those recommendations with the industry and they're really significant reforms that the industry has been able to achieve, but they do have a long way to go," she said. "Having these recommendations in place I guess is providing a stick to make things happen. Is it happening fast enough? They've got a year to get through this." Ms Bourke said as part of the recommendations, mandatory reporting of suspected cruelty has been included in updated legislation. The minister said the government has committed $16.4 million to support RSPCA deliver animal welfare checks. Mr Perna will provide a final report at the end of his two-year term, after which the state government will make a decision on the industry's future in South Australia. He said the completed recommendations so far would be reviewed again at a later time to ensure the actions are continuing.
