Decision on Zayn Rayyan case to be known tomorrow
Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh is scheduled to give the decision involving Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf at the end of the prosecution case at 9am.
If the court decides that the prosecution has succeeded in proving a prima facie case against Ismanira and Zaim Ikhwan, then they will be called to defend themselves, while if not, the two accused will be released and acquitted of the charges.
On April 24, the prosecution closed the case after calling 28 prosecution witnesses throughout the 20-day trial which began on February 4.
Among the prosecution witnesses called to testify were the first person to find Zayn Rayyan's body, Faizul Najib Abd Munaim, Auni Afiqah Abas who was Zayn Rayyan's caregiver, forensic medical consultant Dr Rohayu Shahar Adnan, three investigating officers and two 10-year-old child witnesses.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz and Nur Sabrina Zubairi, while lawyers Haresh Mahadevan, Ramzani Idris and Lavanesh Haresh represented both accused.
Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira, both aged 30, were charged with neglecting Zayn Rayyan in a manner likely to cause physical harm to the victim in the vicinity of Block R, Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai up to the nearby river area between 12 noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023.
They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of RM50,000 or both, if convicted.
Zayn Rayyan, 6, was reported missing on December 5, 2023 and his body was found the next day in a stream near his house. - Bernama

LAHAD DATU: The Marine Police Force arrested two men in an early morning operation at Batu 8, Jalan Silam. The suspects, aged 32 and 38, were detained with two vans carrying contraband cigarettes worth over RM2 million. Police wrapping up case of Iranians who robbed 'hypnotised' tourists in Penang
GEORGE TOWN: Police are finalising investigation papers on the case of five Iranian nationals who were arrested for investigation into the alleged theft of money from foreign tourists around the George Town city centre last Saturday. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said all five, aged between 19 and 35, have finished their police remand and are currently being remanded by the Immigration Department until Aug 15. "Police are still conducting investigations from various angles including the possibility of their involvement in similar cases in other places (other states) however, there have been no findings so far. "Investigations so far show that they are involved in three cases reported in the George Town area and we are completing the investigation papers before it is sent to the deputy public prosecutor's office for further action," he said when contacted by Bernama today. He said police were also still waiting for a response from the Immigration Department to confirm the authenticity of the passports of the five Iranians, including a married couple, and records of their entry and exit in the country. Mohd Alwi said his party was investigating the cases under Section 379 of the Penal Code (for theft) and Section 380 the same act in addition to Section 6 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Last Saturday, police arrested the three men and two women at Plaza Gurney during Op Tourist to assist in the investigation into the theft of money from foreign tourists who were believed to have been swindled through trickery around the city centre, where the suspects are believed to possess expertise to swindle with sweet-talking skills to carry out the crime such as casting victims under a spell or a charm (pukau) before stealing their money. Police received three reports of cash theft involving tourists in a hypnosis scam (pukau) that occurred in the Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang areas involving victims who were Taiwanese, Dutch and Syrian nationals, all aged between 29 and 52, in incidents from July 30 to Aug 1.

Former wushu coach gets 13 years and caning for child sexual assault
KUALA LUMPUR: A former wushu coach has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and four strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl. Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar delivered the verdict after finding the defence failed to raise reasonable doubt in the case against Gjeblehim Bong Teck Fuu, 34. The court ordered the accused to undergo counselling during his imprisonment and placed him under police supervision for three years after his release. Defence counsel Tharamjit Singh's request for a stay of execution pending appeal was dismissed by the court. Bong was charged with committing the offence as the victim's coach at a premises in Taman Sri Sentosa, Jalan Klang Lama, on April 13, 2022. He faced charges under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum 20-year jail term and whipping. Section 16(1) of the same Act imposes a minimum two strokes of the cane and up to five years' imprisonment upon conviction. Tharamjit Singh pleaded for leniency, stating Bong had to care for his elderly mother. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shakila Mohd Shariff argued for a harsher sentence, citing the severe psychological impact on the victim. She emphasised the accused abused his position of trust as a coach, exploiting the child's vulnerability.
