Two men arrested in Lahad Datu over RM2 million smuggled cigarettes
The suspects, aged 32 and 38, were detained with two vans carrying contraband cigarettes worth over RM2 million.
Sabah Region 4 PPM Commander ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim confirmed the operation took place around 1 am.
'Checks on the vehicles uncovered piles of black plastic bags containing a large quantity of various brands of cigarettes,' he said.
The seized cigarettes, believed to be smuggled from a neighbouring country, totalled more than 1.62 million sticks.
Mohd Nazri stated the case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967.
He urged the public to cooperate by reporting criminal activities to curb smuggling.

JPJ Senior Enforcement Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said in the latest operation, Ops Luxury 3.0, conducted from Aug 7 to yesterday, 104 high-end vehicles, including Ferrari, Range Rover, Porsche, and Ford Mustang models driven by both locals and foreigners, were confiscated. He said the vehicles were seized for offences that included the driver not having a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL), as well as expired road tax and insurance, in some cases for extended periods. The latest operation alone saw 627 summonses issued. 'Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number of seizures with 93 vehicles, followed by Selangor (61), Penang (28), Sarawak (16), and Kelantan (15). 'All the vehicles have been placed at the JPJ depot for further investigation and were seized under the Road Transport Act 1987,' he told reporters at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur JPJ Vehicle Storage Depot today. Also present were Kuala Lumpur JPJ Director Hamidi Adam and Selangor JPJ Director Azrin Borhan. Muhammad Kifli said JPJ would not compromise with any party violating traffic regulations, adding that impounded vehicles would only be released once the owners renewed their road tax (LKM) and insurance. He said the periodic implementation of Ops Luxury would continue to be strengthened as part of JPJ's strategic efforts to safeguard the safety, well-being, and sustainability of the nation's transport sector. Any party found breaching the Road Transport Act 1987 or its regulations would face strict action, he added. MCMC records statement over false content in Zara Qairina's case
KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from an individual over false content circulated on social media in connection with the late Zara Qairina Mahathir's case. In a statement, MCMC said the person was summoned to the Cheras police headquarters yesterday, where a mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized to assist investigations. 'The content is believed to contain false information touching on 3R issues (race, religion and royalty), which could cause public confusion and disrupt the authorities' investigation,' the statement read. The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction. MCMC also urged the public to allow the investigation process to run its course and to be wary of speculative content that could mislead the public. 'The spread of unverified information not only risks hurting the feelings of the victim's family but also breaches ethical values and may interfere with the course of justice,' the commission said. Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, a day after she was found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar around 4 am.
