Ban vaping to protect our youth, says consumer group
KOTA KINABALU: The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia has thrown its support behind the government's proposed ban on vaping and e-cigarette products, citing serious risks to public health and safety, especially among the youth.
Its Sabah chapter chairman David Chan said vaping poses significant dangers despite being marketed as a safer alternative to smoking.
"Vaping is far from a harmless alternative, with growing evidence showing that vape liquids often contain toxic chemicals capable of causing severe lung damage and health issues," Chan said in a statement on Thursday (May 15).
He raised alarm over the rising number of vape cartridges laced with illicit substances, including synthetic drugs and hallucinogens such as the so-called "Vape Magic Mushroom."
'These dangerous mixtures are being distributed by unlicensed individuals and openly sold via social media platforms, bypassing legal regulations. This puts the lives of our youth at risk," he warned.
Chan added that if left unchecked, vaping could fuel a surge in drug abuse among schoolchildren, increased dropout rates, addiction-related crimes, and long-term healthcare burdens.
"This issue goes beyond health. It has the potential to undermine social stability, and the risks far outweigh any perceived economic gain," he stressed.
He urged both the federal and state governments to take firm and coordinated action by enforcing a complete ban on all cigarette and vape products.
"Protecting the health and future of our children and young people must be a national priority," said Chan, adding that the foundation stands ready to support any initiative aimed at protecting consumers and public well-being.

'The Department's attempt to blame UMS for pump and meter failures is misleading and unacceptable. This is a systemic failure, students are suffering and communities from Tuaran to Sepanggar are equally affected. The Department must stop making excuses and act immediately,' said Kalabakan Division Chief Sarifuddin Hata, in a statement, Tuesday. The rebuke follows the Departments' statement attributing disruptions to internal campus infrastructure, which UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor called an insult to students forced to protest over unmet basic needs. Kasim was quoted as saying that the root cause is the Department's inadequate supply, exacerbated by low water pressure in hilly areas and skewed distribution favouring low-lying zones despite UMS housing the main R13 storage tank. Warisan urged the State Government to intervene, warning that scapegoating the university only deepens public distrust while solving nothing. 'We stand with UMS and all affected residents. Clean water is a right, not a privilege,' said Sarifuddin, who is also Merotai Assemblyman. Meanwhile, the National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (Yayasan Pengguna Negara Malaysia, YPNM) Sabah Chapter demanded a public apology from the Water Department (JANS). YPNM Sabah Chairman David Chan said JANS' statement was misleading and damaging to UMS, a respected institution of higher learning with thousands of students and academic staff. 'To shift the blame to UMS by alleging internal pumping failures without proper consultation or technical verification is simply irresponsible,' he said, in a statement. Chan said UMS employs a team of qualified engineers and technical experts, many holding Master's and doctoral degrees, who are more than capable of diagnosing system issues. 'To suggest otherwise is a dismissive and disrespectful act that undermines the university's credibility,' he said. Chan called on the JANS Director to withdraw the claim and issue a public apology to UMS students, faculty and administration. 'It gives me happiness to see these patients smile again and their families happy. As Malaysians, we seldom see many people with cleft lip problems (in Malaysia) because our medical care is good. 'Cleft lips and palate deformities are not something difficult to treat, it can be done in an hour, and the recovery is fast,' Chan told Bernama in an interview in the capital recently. Chan, who previously headed a major Malaysian bank in Phnom Penh and later led a Cambodian bank, has been at the helm of Smile Cambodia since 2015. Smile Cambodia is a member of Smile Asia, an international alliance of charities that provides free surgery to children born with cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities. Smile Cambodia was established after Operation Smile Cambodia ceased its operations in Cambodia in early 2015. Operation Smile and Smile Cambodia have conducted nearly 5,700 operations in total in the Kingdom so far. Chan was also the chairman of Operation Smile Cambodia.
