Rolls-Royce shrugs off tariff pressures as profits soar

Shares in the company surged to a new record level on Thursday morning as a result. The FTSE 100 firm said the results showed continued success in the long-term transformation plan first laid out by the company in 2023. On Thursday, the engineering giant revealed that underlying operating profits jumped by 50% to £1.7 billion for the first half of 2025. Rolls-Royce raised its financial forecasts for 2025 as a result, predicting underlying operating profits between £3.1 billion and £3.2 billion this year. It represents a significant upgrade after previously pointing towards profits between £2.7 billion and £2.9 billion. Rolls-Royce, which makes engines used in large Boeing and Airbus planes, said it was supported by a 'strong' performance in its large engines business, as well as margin improvements on contracts. The company said underlying revenues in its civil aerospace arm grew by 17%, with growth of 20% in its power systems division. The London-listed business cheered the 'strong' performance in the face of 'an uncertain external environment, including continued supply chain challenges and tariffs'. It said Rolls-Royce is expecting to fully offset the impact of announced US tariffs through mitigating actions and is also monitoring the potential indirect impact of weaker economic growth and trade tensions. Rolls-Royce also highlighted 'some improvement' in its supply chain, resulting in improvement availability for finished parts, but recorded inflationary pressure in product costs. Tufan Erginbilgic, chief executive of the company said: 'Our multi-year transformation continues to deliver. Our actions led to strong first half year results, despite the challenges of the supply chain and tariffs. 'We are continuing to expand the earnings and cash potential of Rolls-Royce. 'A strong start to the year gives us confidence to raise our guidance for 2025.' Rolls-Royce shares were 9% higher at 1,077p on Thursday morning.

StanChart profit jumps 26% as CEO Winters' turnaround takes root

HONG KONG/LONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - Standard Chartered (StanChart) (STAN.L), opens new tab reported on Thursday a higher-than-expected 26% jump in first-half pretax profit, driven by growth in the bank's wealth and markets businesses that benefitted from the Trump-induced global volatility. The results show progress in CEO Bill Winters' key goal of growing revenue across its three main business lines of wealth, trading and banking, after spending the first half of his 10-year reign restructuring the bank to slash costs. London-listed shares of StanChart opened flat, after its Hong Kong shares pared early losses to be down 0.4% by 0713 GMT, outperforming the broader Hong Kong market (.HIS), opens new tab which was down 1.5%. The bank's shares have outperformed Britain's benchmark FTSE 100 index (.FTSE), opens new tab in recent weeks for the first time since the start of Winters' tenure. "My first couple of years here were particularly tough given the amount of restructuring that we felt we needed to do," Winters told reporters on a conference call, hailing a turnaround at the bank. "And as I think is the case in most turnaround type stories, it takes a while to demonstrate to the market that the value that is there is really there". The London-headquartered lender's pretax profit for the first six months of this year hit $4.38 billion, better than the $3.83 billion analysts had forecast. Emerging markets-focused StanChart also announced a further $1.3 billion share buyback, and an interim dividend of 12.3 cents a share, its first dividend payment in 2025. First-half income grew 11%, and the bank, which earns most of its revenue in Asia and Africa, slightly raised its guidance for full-year income, saying it now expected growth to be at the bottom of a 5%-7% range rather than below it. The trading business, StanChart's second-biggest revenue driver, registered a 28% jump in operating income to $2.4 billion, propelled by buoyant client trading amid rising market volatility following U.S. President Donald Trump's trade tariffs. Wealth management income shot up by 24% as efforts to boost fee revenue paid off with inflows and the number of new accounts rising - with 135,000 new affluent clients joining in the first six months - due to demand for wealth advice amid the market volatility. The bank has said it will target $200 billion in new assets and double-digit growth in income from its wealth business over the next five years, as part of a wider strategy to shift to higher fee-earning businesses. The lender also appeared to dodge the multi-billion dollar China-related write-downs which blighted rival HSBC's (HSBA.L), opens new tab results announced on Wednesday, with StanChart reporting an impairment charge for the first half of $336 million, mainly from its wealth and retail banking unit. The bank said its exposure to Hong Kong's troubled commercial real estate sector was $2.1 billion, less than 0.5% of its total book, with provisions rising $34 million in the second quarter of the year to $116 million. The lender, however, warned that cash constraints on borrowers could lead to more impairments. StanChart also kept its key performance targets largely unchanged, although the bank's Chief Risk Officer Sadia Ricke said the risk of "re-escalation in global tariffs" has somewhat moderated. "Outside tariffs, we remain vigilant in monitoring geopolitical risks across geographies including the Middle East and the resultant impact it could have on certain commodities prices," she said in a statement.

UK's Next lifts profit outlook as warm weather, M&S disruption boost trade

LONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - British clothing retailer Next (NXT.L), opens new tab raised its annual profit outlook for the third time in five months as it reported better-than-expected second-quarter sales, benefiting from warm weather and disruption at cyberattack-hit rival Marks & Spencer (MKS.L), opens new tab. Next has around 460 stores in the UK and Ireland and an online presence in over 70 countries selling the Next brand and more than 700 other brands. With the United Kingdom accounting for around 80% of its sales, it is often considered a useful gauge of how British consumers are faring. It said on Thursday full-price sales in the 13 weeks to July 26 rose 10.5% versus last year - ahead of guidance of 6.5% and compared to growth of 11.4% in the first quarter. Sales overperformed against Next's expectations in both the UK and overseas, it said. The retailer said UK sales growth of 7.8% was largely due to better than expected weather and "trading disruption at a major competitor", which it did not name. However, Next's second quarter overlapped a period where M&S stopped taking online clothing orders following a cyberattack, opens new tab which has cost it 300 million pounds ($398 million) in profit. Industry data has shown Next to be a beneficiary of M&S' woes, along with Zara ( opens new tab and H&M ( opens new tab. Next said international sales grew a faster than expected 26.4% mainly because its digital marketing proved more effective than anticipated. Though Next raised its guidance for second half full price sales growth to 4.5% from 3.5% previously, it remained cautious for the period. It expects UK employment opportunities to continue to diminish, with the effects of April's employer tax increases continuing to filter through into the economy. "We believe that this will increasingly dampen consumer spending as the year progresses," it said. Reflecting that caution, Next shares were flat on Thursday, having risen 29% in 2025 so far. "Next is cautious about the second half of the year, but the company has a good track record of under-promising and over-delivering," Zoe Gillespie, wealth manager at RBC Brewin Dolphin, said. Next raised its forecast for year to January 2026 pretax profit by 25 million pounds to 1.105 billion pounds. Profit topped 1 billion pounds for the first time in 2024/25. On Wednesday, Next bought the brand rights to maternity retailer Seraphine. ($1 = 0.7539 pounds)
