Athletics: US sprinter Richardson seeks to kickstart season after February injury - Omni sports
"I was injured this year in February, that completely set me back for the season -- my start of the season and just how I would normally execute," the 25-year-old US sprint star said at a pre-meet press conference on Friday.
Richardson didn't elaborate on the nature of the injury, but she has raced just one 100m this season, posting a lackluster 11.47sec at Tokyo in May.
The reigning 100m world champion says the most important thing now is to get races under her belt and stay healthy as she looks toward her title defence in Tokyo.
"My biggest thing is having a healthy race (Saturday)," she said. "With a healthy race, me being confident in me, just knowing what I know and being capable of doing, I know that I will produce what it is that I want."
Richardson called it a "blessing in disguise" that the World Championships date of September 13-21 stretches the season out.
Also, as the reigning title holder, she has a bye in the 100m, but she said she "definitely plans" to bid for a 200m place at the US trials in Eugene later this month.
"The only thing that matters is world championships," she said.
On Saturday, Richardson will be facing an elite field in the 100m led by Saint Lucia's Julien Alfred, who beat Richardson for Paris Olympics gold last year.
Paris bronze medallist Melissa Jefferson-Wooden -- who clocked a world-leading 10.73sec at a Grand Slam Track meeting in June -- is also entered.
Alfred, a convincing winner in Stockholm three weeks ago in 10.75, said she's hoping to build on that performance -- which surprised her at the time.
"The day before, I had a mental breakdown because my coach and I had been working on a few things," she confided. "I was a bit hard on myself going into the race, but the time really shocked me just on my execution."

'Rarely been so angry': Bayern's Kompany seethes after Musiala injury
The 22-year-old Germany international fell and appeared to suffer a severe ankle injury after an innocuous collision in play with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during the French side's 2-0 quarter-final victory in Atlanta. Musiala was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Serge Gnabry for the second half. "I've rarely been so angry at half-time, not against my players," Kompany told reporters. "There are many things in life that are much more important than this, but in the end, for these guys, it's their life. "Someone like Jamal lives for this and he (recently) came back from a setback. And then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless." Kompany said he wanted his Bayern side to try and find motivation in the injury against the European champions. "You try and get strength out of it because you want to do it for Jamal," explained the Belgian coach. "When I'm sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment, it's not the result. "I understand this is football, but it's the fact that it happened to someone that, for one, enjoys the game so much, but also is very important for us. "It didn't look good... it looks like an ankle injury of some type, but I'm not going to make a diagnosis here." PSG players also showed support for the youngster -- one of football's most promising young talents. "A shout-out to Jamal Musiala, who suffered a serious injury, it's something you do not want to see on the field," PSG defender Marquinhos told DAZN. "It's important we talk about Jamal Musiala," said Achraf Hakimi. "I want to give my support to him. We hope to see him back on the pitch soon." Tennis: Djokovic 100 not out, into fourth round at Wimbledon - Omni sports
Novak Djokovic recorded his 100th win at Wimbledon with a dominant victory over Serbian Davis Cup team-mate Miomir Kecmanovic on Saturday to remain on course for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic said before a ball was struck at the All England Club this year that Wimbledon presented his best chance to surpass the 24 majors won by the long-retired Australian Margaret Court. A seven-time champion in south-west London, Djokovic is showing he is a credible contender for his first Slam victory since 2023. The 38-year-old has dropped just 12 games in his last two matches after romping to a 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 victory in just under two hours on court. Djokovic's 100 wins puts him behind only Roger Federer's 105 victories in the men's game and nine-time winner Martina Navratilova's all-time record of 120. Conserving his energy could prove vital in the second week with Djokovic likely to have to beat both the world's top two players, Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, if he is to lift the trophy on July 13. He faces Australian 11th seed Alex de Minaur in the fourth round. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) Tennis: Tearful defending champion Krejcikova knocked out of Wimbledon - Omni sports
Barbora Krejcikova's reign as Wimbledon champion came to a tearful end on Saturday as the Czech slumped to a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat against American 10th seed Emma Navarro. Krejcikova appeared to be struggling with injury in the closing stages and wept on Court One as Navarro took advantage to cause the latest upset in the women's tournament following the exits of five of the top six seeds. The 29-year-old had to fight back from a set down to beat rising star Alexandra Eala in the first round before another tense three-set win over Caroline Dolehide in the second round. There would be no dramatic escape for Krejcikova this time, with the 17th seed's fitness problems finally catching up with her. Krejcikova arrived at Wimbledon with just six matches under her belt in an injury-ravaged 2025. The two-time Grand Slam champion has endured a difficult time since defeating Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon final last year, having played just six matches this season prior to returning to the All England Club this week. She was out of action until May after suffering a back injury and lost in the second round of the French Open. Krejcikova also pulled out of the recent Eastbourne Open before the quarter-finals with a thigh problem. The world number 16 had relished being back on the hallowed turf of the All England Club, describing her first-round match on Centre Court as like "playing in the temple of tennis". Initially it seemed she would be equally inspired on Court One as Krejcikova strolled through the first set. But the Czech lost her rhythm in the second set and Navarro pounced to level the match. Krejcikova took a lengthy spell off-court to compose herself before the decider, but she quickly squandered five break points and then dropped her own serve in the third game. Leaning on her racquet with a concerned grimace after another unforced error, Krejcikova looked less than fully fit. She managed to break in the next game but Navarro immediately regained the lead with another break, prompting Krejcikova to call for a medical time-out that included having her blood pressure checked. Constantly bending over in obvious discomfort, Krejcikova's Wimbledon reign was coming to a painful end. Even a break back for the Czech couldn't lift her and Navarro delivered the knockout blow, breaking again before serving out the victory as Krejcikova left the court struggling to hold back tears.
