RM274,000 frozen chicken feet scam: Company director claims trial in KL court
R Gopinatan Pillai, 60, was accused of deceiving an individual into believing he could supply frozen chicken feet for export to China, causing the victim to deposit RM273,987.50 into his company's bank account.
The offence was allegedly committed at an office unit in Menara Sentral Vista, Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, here on July 5, 2023.
The charge, under Section 420 of the Penal Code, carries a penalty of up to 10 years' imprisonment, whipping and a fine, upon conviction.
Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril set September 2 for mention and bail appeal after Gopinatan, who is currently being held at the Sungai Buloh Prison for another offence, informed the court that his lawyer was absent today and would appeal for bail on the next mention date.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Batrisyia Mohd Khusri had offered bail of RM30,000 with one surety. — Bernama

(File pic) SINGAPORE : Malaysian billionaire Ong Beng Seng's status as a Singapore permanent resident will be reviewed by the authorities following his conviction and sentencing for abetting obstruction of justice in a case linked to a former minister, according to local media reports. An immigration spokesperson told the Straits Times on Friday that the department would review the status of Singapore permanent residents who have been convicted of an offence, Bernama reported. Ong, 79, was fined the maximum amount of S$30,000 on Friday after he pleaded guilty to the charge on Aug 4. A second charge, of instigating former transport minister S Iswaran to obtain flights and a hotel stay from him, was taken into consideration for sentencing. Principal district judge Lee Lit Cheng agreed with both the prosecution and defence that judicial mercy should be exercised in this case due to Ong's ill health. He suffers from an incurable form of cancer that has damaged his skeletal system and severely compromised his immune system. He also suffers from other complications that further increase his risk of infection and place him at risk of gangrene. Ong is the founder of Singapore-based Hotel Properties Limited which is a shareholder of various businesses, including Hard Rock resorts and Four Seasons resorts across Europe and Asia.

APEC Preparation Meeting Approves Seoul-Led Action Plan For Development
SEOUL, Aug 15 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- A Seoul-led action plan for the capacity building of developing economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was approved at a meeting of senior APEC officials held to prepare the upcoming APEC summit in South Korea, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Friday. According to Yonhap News Agency, the five-step Capacity Building Need Initiative (CBNI) for developing APEC economies was endorsed at the APEC 2025 Korea Third Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM3), held in Incheon, about 40 kilometres west of Seoul. The two-day SOM3 brought together some 5,800 officials from 21 APEC member economies, delegations from observers and the secretariat to discuss a road map on strengthening the service competitiveness of the Asia-Pacific region and improving the environment for business and trade as well as devising a new financial action plan for APEC.

Bung to testify in graft case on Monday
Bung Moktar Radin and Zizie Izette Abdul Samad were ordered to enter their defence last November on charges of corruption and abetment over a RM150 million Felcra investment. KUALA LUMPUR : Bung Moktar Radin, who was ordered to enter his defence on charges of corruption over a RM150 million Felcra investment almost three years ago, is expected to take the witness stand at the sessions court on Monday. M Athimulan, the lawyer for the Kinabatangan MP and Sabah Umno chief, confirmed the matter. 'Yes, the defence will begin their case on Monday,' he told FMT in a text message. The trial, to be presided over by sessions court judge Rosli Ahmad, is also fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Sept 2, 2022, then sessions court judge Rozina Ayob ordered Bung and his wife, Zizie Izette Abdul Samad, to enter their defence after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against them. Zizie is charged with abetting her husband. The High Court acquitted them of the charges following a revision application after it ruled that Rozina had erred in calling them to answer the charges. Last year, the Court of Appeal allowed the prosecution's appeal to order the couple to enter the defence, saying that the revision application was premature. Three months ago, Bung and Zizie failed to set aside the appellate court's decision. Bung, the non-executive chairman of Felcra at the time, was charged with two counts of receiving bribes of RM2.2 million and RM262,500 as an inducement to obtain Felcra's approval to invest RM150 million in Public Mutual unit trusts. He is alleged to have accepted bribes from Norhaili Madhi, a Public Mutual investment agent, through Zizie. He was also charged with receiving a bribe of RM337,500 from Norhaili under Zizie's name at the same location on June 19, 2015. Zizie faces three charges of abetting Bung in the commission of the alleged offences. Lawyer K Kumaraendran is appearing for Zizie, while deputy public prosecutors Law Chin How and Fadhly Zamry are representing the prosecution.
