Multiple children in hospital after falling ill at music festival in 'extraordinary incident'
A group of children were taken to hospital after an "extraordinary medical incident" that led to the cancellation of a music festival. The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod organisers confirmed on Wednesday the incident was due to a "flu-like outbreak", with several individuals exhibiting similar symptoms.
Public Health Wales stepped in on Thursday to confirm a "small group of children" had been affected by the outbreak. The agency reassured that while the children are currently in hospital for assessment, they are not in a serious condition, reports Wales Online.
Chris Williams, Consultant in Health Protection for Public Health Wales, said: "We are aware that a small group of children who were visiting the Eisteddfod at Llangollen were taken to hospital [on Wednesday] evening.
"Currently, the children are being medically assessed for mild respiratory symptoms, but they are not seriously unwell."
Festival organisers announced the event was given the all-clear to proceed as usual on Thursday morning. The annual six-day festival attracts performers from across the globe to compete in over 20 categories, drawing an audience exceeding 50,000.
Past participants include renowned artists such as Luciano Pavarotti, Julian Lloyd Webber, and Katherine Jenkins.
A festival statement confirmed: "Further to the previous statement, we can confirm that following the declaration of an extraordinary incident by the Welsh Ambulance Service, following Public Health Wales advice - the incident related to a flu-like outbreak and related to multiple people with similar symptoms.
"The extraordinary incident was called by the Welsh Ambulance Service due to the number of people who presented ill at one time. The Llangollen International Eisteddfod takes the safety of its audience, competitors, performers and volunteers extremely seriously.
"Therefore, following advice - we were forced to cancel an event in this way for the first time in our history.
"We are pleased to report our site has been cleared to re-open tomorrow at 9am, as we continue to welcome the world to Wales. We'd like to thank our staff, medical staff and our volunteers for their swift response this evening."

An earlier announcement from organisers said the event had been axed at short notice due to an "extraordinary medical incident". Festival bosses praised the medical teams who responded to the situation.
They concluded: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

BBC bosses 'unable to retrieve Huw Edwards' £200k salary' amid huge job cuts
BBC staff are reportedly angry at bosses who are yet to recoup Huw Edwards' £200,000 salary after over a year. The disgraced TV star, 63, pled guilty to having indecent images of children, including those as young as seven, in July 2024. He had admitted to three charges of making indecent photographs and receiving 41 illegal images from a convicted paedophile over WhatsApp. Edwards was handed a six-month suspended prison term, and the BBC subsequently demanded he repay five months' worth of salary, covering the period from his arrest in November 2023 until his resignation in April the following year. According to reports, there are members of staff disgruntled at bosses not reclaiming the money while cutting 155 roles in the news division as part of a bid to save an estimated £24million. 'Huw Edwards has not returned any money paid to him by the BBC after his arrest, in respect of any of his work for either BBC public service or the BBC's commercial operations,' the BBC said. 'The BBC has asked for all the money paid to Huw Edwards by the BBC for the period November 2023 (arrest) and April 2024 (resignation) to be returned.' An insider told The Sun that 'everyone is raging about it' behind the scenes. As well as strong feelings towards Edwards following his conviction, it's reported that are angry that 'gutless bosses seem unwilling or unable to do anything about it' in terms of the money. In May this year, BBC chairman Dr Shah reiterated calls for the money to be returned. Really, just give it back. You know you should and you should do it,' Dr Shah, who has been BBC chairman since March 2024, told Times Radio. He added: 'We've been asking him and asking him and asking him. We're getting legal advice on it.' The corporation has made a number of public requests to Edwards regarding the money, and in August 2024 the BBC Board said: 'Mr Edwards pleaded guilty to an appalling crime. 'Had he been up front when asked by the BBC about his arrest, we would never have continued to pay him public money.' BBC director-general Tim Davie had explained to Amol Rajan that the BBC's current policy indicates someone should be 'paid until charged', which is why the former newsreader received his salary after his November arrest. More Trending 'We want the money back and we've asked for it back, and we're waiting to hear back,' Davie added. Edwards had been on screens for 40 years and rose to become the highest-paid presenter on the channel with his 2023/2024 pay bracket of £475,000 to £479,999. Beloved EastEnders couple finally reunite but there's disaster ahead
This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs on BBC One at 7.30pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) and Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy) have finally reunited – but there may be trouble ahead… It's about time these two settled down together, after clearly harbouring their feelings and trying to move on with other Albert Square residents. In the last week they've been somewhat forced together, what with the whole family disowning matriarch Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal). As viewers will recall, Suki had decided to conceal Ravi and Priya's daughter Avani's (Aaliyah James) pregnancy from them, in a bid to raise the child as her own. Suki's wife Eve (Heather Peace) was firmly against the idea, and knew that the decision had to come from Avani. When she opted to have a termination, she took her to the clinic. Back at home, Avani came clean to Ravi and Priya about her recent ordeal and Suki was in the firing line. Ultimately, the clan decided they couldn't stand by her after the troubling secret and all moved into Ravi's flat. In today's episode, Priya was quite enjoying the new set-up, and while not the most conventional, they were hoping a day out in the city would be just the ticket to lifting everyones spirits. However, outside, an undercover police office watched their property intently. Ravi clocked that something was afoot, and when he arrived at his now defunct restaurant Walford East, dealer Okie (Aayan Ibikunle Shoderu) told him that their main base had been raided and he'd had to clear out the stash before it could be discovered. With other options exhausted, they were going to have to use Kojo Asare's (Dayo Koleosho) flat as their den. Kojo's best mate Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) was firmly against the idea, fearful that he could be deported back to Ghana if he was found to be in the possession of drugs. But Ravi wasn't taking no for an answer, he slammed a car bonnet down on Harry's hand and told him they had no choice. Later, Okie emotionally blackmailed Kojo into allowing him to use the flat. Priya was furious that Ravi had forgotten about their plans, and dragged him home for a serious conversation. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? She understood that losing the restaurant was a big deal for him, but firmly believed that they would be able to get by if he got onto the straight and narrow to support his children. More Trending Ravi noted that she was including herself in those plans, and leaned in for a kiss. Priya reciprocated, and the two soon headed to bed together. After an afternoon of passion, he assured her that he was committed to building a new life away from the criminal underworld, but of course he couldn't stick to his word! After contemplating telling Okie that their operation was off, Ravi realised that he had no option to continue. View More » Is Priya about to have her heart broken?
