Multiple children in hospital after falling ill at music festival in 'extraordinary incident'
A group of children were taken to hospital after an "extraordinary medical incident" that led to the cancellation of a music festival. The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod organisers confirmed on Wednesday the incident was due to a "flu-like outbreak", with several individuals exhibiting similar symptoms.
Public Health Wales stepped in on Thursday to confirm a "small group of children" had been affected by the outbreak. The agency reassured that while the children are currently in hospital for assessment, they are not in a serious condition, reports Wales Online.
Chris Williams, Consultant in Health Protection for Public Health Wales, said: "We are aware that a small group of children who were visiting the Eisteddfod at Llangollen were taken to hospital [on Wednesday] evening.
"Currently, the children are being medically assessed for mild respiratory symptoms, but they are not seriously unwell."
Festival organisers announced the event was given the all-clear to proceed as usual on Thursday morning. The annual six-day festival attracts performers from across the globe to compete in over 20 categories, drawing an audience exceeding 50,000.
Past participants include renowned artists such as Luciano Pavarotti, Julian Lloyd Webber, and Katherine Jenkins.
A festival statement confirmed: "Further to the previous statement, we can confirm that following the declaration of an extraordinary incident by the Welsh Ambulance Service, following Public Health Wales advice - the incident related to a flu-like outbreak and related to multiple people with similar symptoms.
"The extraordinary incident was called by the Welsh Ambulance Service due to the number of people who presented ill at one time. The Llangollen International Eisteddfod takes the safety of its audience, competitors, performers and volunteers extremely seriously.
"Therefore, following advice - we were forced to cancel an event in this way for the first time in our history.
"We are pleased to report our site has been cleared to re-open tomorrow at 9am, as we continue to welcome the world to Wales. We'd like to thank our staff, medical staff and our volunteers for their swift response this evening."

BBC staff are reportedly angry at bosses who are yet to recoup Huw Edwards' £200,000 salary after over a year. The disgraced TV star, 63, pled guilty to having indecent images of children, including those as young as seven, in July 2024. He had admitted to three charges of making indecent photographs and receiving 41 illegal images from a convicted paedophile over WhatsApp. Edwards was handed a six-month suspended prison term, and the BBC subsequently demanded he repay five months' worth of salary, covering the period from his arrest in November 2023 until his resignation in April the following year. According to reports, there are members of staff disgruntled at bosses not reclaiming the money while cutting 155 roles in the news division as part of a bid to save an estimated £24million. 'Huw Edwards has not returned any money paid to him by the BBC after his arrest, in respect of any of his work for either BBC public service or the BBC's commercial operations,' the BBC said. 'The BBC has asked for all the money paid to Huw Edwards by the BBC for the period November 2023 (arrest) and April 2024 (resignation) to be returned.' Beloved EastEnders couple finally reunite but there's disaster ahead

Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) and Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy) have finally reunited – but there may be trouble ahead… It's about time these two settled down together, after clearly harbouring their feelings and trying to move on with other Albert Square residents. In the last week they've been somewhat forced together, what with the whole family disowning matriarch Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal). As viewers will recall, Suki had decided to conceal Ravi and Priya's daughter Avani's (Aaliyah James) pregnancy from them, in a bid to raise the child as her own. Suki's wife Eve (Heather Peace) was firmly against the idea, and knew that the decision had to come from Avani. When she opted to have a termination, she took her to the clinic. Back at home, Avani came clean to Ravi and Priya about her recent ordeal and Suki was in the firing line. Billy Connolly warns of scammers making AI deepfake videos
The comedy legend said he had become aware of multiple accounts assuming his identity on social media. Fans who follow the comedian's official Facebook page have been sent messages by fake accounts pretending to be Connolly, the Daily Record reports. The Glasgow comedian, 82, said his Facebook page is his only active social media account, warning that scammers can use AI to convince people they are in contact with him.
