West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday slammed the Centre for major security and intelligence lapses and the 'total failure in stopping the Pahalgam terror attack'. Banerjee said there was an opportunity to capture Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the Pahalgam attack, when the combined armed forces had shown such valour. She criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for marketing Operation Sindoor 'In Pahalgam, many people lost their lives. When people died, you (Modi) are campaigning. We respect Sindoor. Sindoor is worn by women but you are shaming women's sindoor,' Banerjee said in the assembly, which led to protests by the BJP.'The Centre should have been more stringent as there have been major security lapses. Where did the terrorists come from? How did they get the weapons and disappear? Why have they not been caught till now,' Banerjee asked.Talking about that the External Affairs minister, Banerjee said he was a bureaucrat earlier and a nice gentleman, but 'there must have been some lapses'.The assembly tabled and passed a resolution on Pahalgam on Tuesday honouring the role of the armed forces for their precision strikes against Pakistan and PoK and to condemn the attack on tourists in Pahalgam. Discussions were held by both the ruling party and Opposition BJP for two hours.'I express gratitude to the three armed forces –– Army, Navy and Air Force. We salute them. I believe terrorism has no religion and no one can be pardoned,' she said, adding that Bengal assembly was the first where such a resolution has been passed and it should be replicated in all state assemblies, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. She criticised the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) bailout to Pakistan, saying that the country was being granted a loan, instead of being 'globally cornered'.Banerjee said that before elections, there should not be any 'Pulwama-like incidents', to which BJP MLAs protested.Banerjee said, 'We don't support terrorism. Terror has no caste, creed and religion. The attack on tourists in Pahalgam and the way people were killed, we condemn and condole it. We are in solidarity with their families. Those who lost their lives included army personnel Jhhantu Ali Sheikh. Adil, a porter and a minority youth, sacrificed his life."Banerjee also mentioned that in Gujarat, which shares borders with Pakistan, and which is the home state of PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Pak spies were arrested for passing on information.Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari thanked the Chair for moving the resolution. 'We support the resolution and participated in the debate,' he said.Adhikari said for the BJP, the nation comes first. 'We salute our soldiers, and honour those who have sacrificed their lives. Former PM, the late Atal Behari Vajpayee, had made APJ Abdul Kalam the first Muslim President, and your party voted for him. Our fight is not against any community; it is against those who live in India but engage in anti-India activities. We strongly oppose anyone who supports the Ansarullah Bangla Team,' Adhikari said.'It was a targeted killing (Hindu community) in Pahalgam. They were forced to recite the Kalma. Bitan Adhikari's (who was killed in Pahalgam) widow told me this. Similarly, Samir Guha's wife from Behala said the same. They identified Hindus and killed them. Yes, Adil Shah was killed,' Adhikari said.Adhikari asked why the name 'Operation Sindoor' was missing in the resolution and urged the Speaker to bring an amendment to include it.

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri accuses AAP of isolating Punjab from national development
Union minister of petroleum and natural gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of isolating the state from national development by failing to implement key central schemes. Puri, who was in Ludhiana to campaign for Bharatiya Janata Party's Ludhiana West bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta, cited Ayushman Bharat scheme as a 'glaring example of how people of Punjab were being denied basic benefits available in other states'. 'States that cooperate with the Centre's policies are witnessing robust development. Sadly, Punjab is not among them,' he said. Puri also raised concerns on Punjab's law and order situation, and termed the Bhagwant Mann government's war on drugs as a 'hoax'. Speaking about India's economic journey under the Modi government, Puri said, 'In 2014, India was the 10th largest economy at 2 trillion dollars. Today, with a 4.3 trillion dollar economy, India has surpassed the UK and Japan to become the fourth largest economy in the world. We are poised to overtake Germany by next year and become the third largest economy by 2026.' Citing World Bank projections, he said that with a growth rate of 6.5%, India stands out among global economies, significantly ahead of nations like the UK, Germany, and Japan, each of which is growing at just around 2%. 'The world is watching India with great interest. But Punjab's isolation from this national growth trajectory is unfortunate,' Puri remarked. Cheema hits back Meanwhile, Punjab finance minister Harpal Cheema hit back, stating that the BJP government had plunged India into a debt spiral. He said that when the BJP assumed power in 2014, the nation's debt stood at approximately ₹55 lakh crore, which has since ballooned to ₹215 lakh crore. On Puri's allegations about Punjab not implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme, he said the central scheme is riddled with many problems that prevent many from receiving its benefits. On the contrary, Cheema said, AAP's Mohalla Clinics had provided treatment to millions of poor families without any restriction. He also questioned Puri about the BJP's 'unfulfilled promises' of depositing ₹15 lakh into the account of every Indian citizen and creating two crore jobs annually, among others.

Won't allow Tamil Nadu to be ruled from Delhi: CM Stalin
COIMBATORE: 'Tamils have self-respect and we will never allow Tamil Nadu to be ruled from Delhi,' said Chief Minister MK Stalin during a government programme in Salem on Thursday. The chief minister released water from the Mettur Dam for irrigation in delta districts, and announced an increase in the procurement price of paddy to Rs 2,500 per quintal. 'Farmers will now get Rs 2,500 per quintal. Accordingly, the procurement price of paddy will be increased to Rs 131 for the normal variety and Rs 156 for the short variety. The normal variety will be purchased at Rs 2,500 and the short variety at Rs 2,545.' Taking a dig at Union Home Minister Amit Shah's speech in Madurai, Stalin said, 'Some people cannot bear the functioning of the Dravidian model of governance. A few days ago, Amit Shah came to Madurai. He criticised the DMK government saying we only make announcements and do nothing. He claimed that the DMK government is reversing the schemes provided by the BJP-led government at the centre. The truth is that the state government is providing additional funds because these schemes cannot be implemented using the funds allocated by the union government. The state government is allocating over 50% of the funds for schemes that bear Prime Minister Narendra Modi's name.' Referring to a scene from the Rajinikanth-starrer film Padayappa, he said, 'There is a dialogue — he is the groom, but the shirt he is wearing is mine. Similarly, the schemes may be launched by the union government, but we are providing the funds.'

Every penny given to the Centre by Tamil Nadu returned, says BJP leader Annamalai
COIMBATORE: Former president of Tamil Nadu BJP, K Annamalai, on Thursday said the two schemes – Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam and Muthalvar Marundhagam – introduced by the TN government in competition with the central government's Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma scheme and Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Periyojana (PMBJP) have utterly failed. He said the Muthalvar Marundhagam scheme has failed to attract people and also affected the supply chain of the PMBJP scheme. He was speaking to the media in Coimbatore after releasing a book detailing the BJP government's electoral promises and its accomplishments. The book launch was part of the celebration of 11 years of the BJP rule at the centre. Stating that the BJP has transparently shared information about its promises, Annamalai criticised the DMK government for failing to fulfill at least 50 of its 512 electoral promises, even after completing four years of its rule in TN. He highlighted that TN has contributed Rs 4,36,136 crore to the central government over the last four years, while the total transfer from the centre to TN has been Rs 5,47,380 crore. 'Every penny given to the centre from the state has been returned. We will share the data, and the state government can verify it,' Annamalai said.
