Chennai Super Kings have not had the best of times at home this season, losing three of their four matches at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in IPL 2025. Over the years, CSK had built an unbreachable fortress at Chepauk, but this season has proven to be a struggle for the home team. They suffered a loss to Delhi Capitals in Chennai for the first time in 15 years, and shortly after, they were beaten by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the first time since 2008.
On Friday, April 25, MS Dhoni lost yet another toss in Chennai, and he looked slightly disappointed when Sunrisers Hyderabad's captain, Pat Cummins, asked the home side to bat first. | CSK vs SRH - Coverage |
When asked about the surface and his thoughts on batting first, MS Dhoni admitted that he has found it difficult to read the pitch at Chepauk ever since it was relaid in late 2010.
"I've been saying this since 2010. When I mention that I'm not sure about the wicket, people expect a slow pitch, but that's not the case. The wicket hasn't been the same since we returned in 2010 after the Champions Trophy when it was relaid. Sometimes, batting first is a good option, sometimes batting second is better. The groundsmen are doing their best, and I think the old red soil suits the conditions here," Dhoni explained.
Over the years, the pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium has undergone several changes. Once regarded as a spinner's paradise, the Chepauk pitch has become increasingly batter- and pacer-friendly. In fact, during the 2024 season, CSK had a strong home record, winning five of their seven matches on pitches that favoured seamers more.
Heading into the 2025 season, CSK strengthened their line-up with three quality spinners in Noor Ahmed, Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin. However, the trio has failed to deliver together so far.
Earlier in the season, CSK's head coach, Stephen Fleming, also expressed his disappointment with the pitches in Chennai, stating that the team had not been able to enjoy a true home advantage in recent years.
"There's no home advantage at Chepauk. We've won a couple of matches away from home, but we haven't been able to read the wickets here in the last few years. This isn't something new for us, we're trying to adjust to the conditions every day, but it's still uncertain," Fleming added.
In a bid to revive their campaign, CSK made three changes to their playing XI. They brought in Sam Curran, Deepak Hooda, and handed a debut to Dewald Brevis, while dropping Jamie Overton, Vijay Shankar, and opener Rachin Ravindra.
With only two wins from their first eight matches, CSK now find themselves needing to win all of their remaining six fixtures to stay in contention for the playoffs.

WTC Final: Markram's defiant century at Lord's puts South Africa in driver's seat against Australia

Opener Aiden Markram remained unbeaten on 104 and shared an unbroken 143-run stand with captain Temba Bavuma (65 not out) as South Africa ended Day 3 of the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's on 213/2, needing another 69 runs to win. read more South African opener Aiden Markram embraces captain Temba Bavuma after completing his century on Day 3 of the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. AP Aiden Markram's superb century on Friday left South Africa on the brink of a dramatic victory in the World Test Championship final against Australia after decades of heartbreak in major tournaments. South Africa reached the close on the third day at Lord's on 213-2 in their second innings, needing just 69 runs to win, with eight wickets still standing. Opener Markram, dismissed for a duck in the first innings, was 102 not out and South Africa captain Temba Bavuma unbeaten on 65 despite spending most of his innings limping with a hamstring injury. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The pair have shared an unbroken stand of 143 as South Africa pursue what will be, if they achieve it, the second-highest successful run chase in a Test at Lord's. The highest chase was the 344 made by the West Indies in 1984. But South Africa, whose last International Cricket Council title came at the 1998 ICC Knockout, have such a long history of folding under pressure that their supporters will not be taking anything for granted against serial winners and WTC title-holders Australia. Australia's Mitchell Starc had starred earlier Friday with both bat and ball to put his team in charge. The tailender made 58 not out in Australia's second-innings total of 207 and then, in his main role of left-arm fast bowler, dismissed Ryan Rickelton (six) and Wiaan Mulder (27) to leave the Proteas 70-2. Starc almost had a third wicket when Bavuma got a thick edge only for Smith, in a helmet at an advanced slip position, to drop a fast-travelling catch and leave the field with a finger injury. But with any early moisture in the surface long gone, conditions for batting at a sun-drenched Lord's were now as good as at any time in the match. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Markram ton Markram, aggressive from the outset, punched and pulled Australia captain Pat Cummins for well-struck fours. With Australia appearing to miss absent former captain Smith's tactical input, Bavuma produced the occasional gem of a shot, including a glorious drive down the ground off Cummins. Australia spinner Nathan Lyon almost dismissed both batsmen, with Markram aiming a booming drive at a sharply turning off-break, only to miss the ball completely before it also beat wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Bavuma had made 43 when a slog-sweep off Lyon just evaded a diving Sam Konstas at deep midwicket as the substitute fielder attempted to pull off a low catch only for the ball to run away for four. Soon afterwards, the diminutive Bavuma, who has a history of hamstring trouble, completed a gritty 83-ball fifty. Markram went to 97 with a brilliant straight-driven boundary off Josh Hazlewood and, shortly before stumps, clipped the fast bowler through midwicket to complete his hundred with an 11th four in 156 balls faced. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It was only the 30-year-old's eighth hundred in 84 Test innings. Earlier Friday South Africa enjoyed an early breakthrough when Kagiso Rabada had Nathan Lyon plumb lbw to leave Australia 148-9 in their second innings. But tailender Starc, dropped in the gully on 14 by Marco Jansen late on the Thursday, kept the Proteas at bay, ably assisted by Hazlewood, reaching the 11th fifty of his 97-Test career. Part-time spinner Markram eventually succeeded where the frontline bowlers had failed when Hazlewood holed out to end a 59-run partnership for the last wicket. Paceman Rabada took 4-59 to finish with nine wickets in the match.

Australia vs South Africa, WTC Final: Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma bring Proteas closer to ICC glory on Day 3

Aiden Markram vs Australia in the WTC Final (Image via AP /Kirsty Wigglesworth) South Africa moved closer to winning their first World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's on Friday, reaching 213-2 in their second innings with Aiden Markram scoring an unbeaten century. The Proteas need just 69 more runs with eight wickets remaining to achieve what would be the second-highest successful run chase at Lord's. Markram finished the day on 102 not out, partnering with captain Temba Bavuma who scored 65 despite battling a hamstring injury. The pair built an unbroken 143-run partnership as South Africa pursued victory. The highest successful chase at Lord's remains 344, set by the West Indies in 1984. South Africa has not won an ICC title since the 1998 ICC Knockout. Australia's Mitchell Starc made significant contributions earlier in the day, scoring an unbeaten 58 in Australia's second innings total of 207. He then dismissed Ryan Rickelton for six and Wiaan Mulder for 27 as a fast bowler. Starc nearly claimed a third wicket when Bavuma edged the ball, but Smith dropped the catch at an advanced slip position and left the field with a finger injury. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Batting conditions improved significantly at Lord's under sunny skies, with early moisture dissipating from the surface. Poll Will South Africa secure their first World Test Championship title against Australia? Yes No Markram displayed aggressive intent from the start, scoring boundaries off Australian captain Pat Cummins through punches and pulls. Bavuma, despite his injury, contributed with elegant shots including a drive down the ground off Cummins. Australian spinner Nathan Lyon challenged both batsmen. Markram survived a close call when he missed a sharply turning off-break that also eluded wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Bavuma reached his fifty off 83 balls, despite being hampered by a hamstring injury. He had a lucky escape on 43 when his slog-sweep off Lyon fell just short of substitute fielder Sam Konstas at deep midwicket. Markram achieved his eighth Test century in 84 innings, reaching the milestone with his 11th boundary through midwicket off Josh Hazlewood. He had earlier moved to 97 with a straight drive off the same bowler. Bold prediction! Astrologer Greenstone Lobo picks winner of Australia vs South Africa WTC Final 2025 The day began with South Africa making early progress when Kagiso Rabada dismissed Nathan Lyon lbw, leaving Australia at 148-9. However, Starc, who had been dropped on 14 by Marco Jansen the previous day, formed a crucial 59-run last-wicket partnership with Hazlewood. Part-time spinner Markram eventually ended the Australian innings by dismissing Hazlewood. Rabada finished with impressive match figures of 9 wickets, including 4-59 in the second innings. The match situation leaves South Africa well-positioned to secure a historic victory, though they face the challenge of overcoming their history of struggling in major tournament finals against the defending World Test Championship holders Australia.

Ex-England Stars Son Set To Face Ayush Mhatre, Vaibhav Suryavanshi In THIS Series

The England and Wales Cricket board announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming U19 One-Day tour scheduled against India later this month. The team will face the likes of Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi who announced their arrival to World Cricket with fabulous IPL 2025 performances. Interestingly the English squad included Rocky Flintoff, son of one of the finest all-rounders Andrew Flintoff. Rocky has played 12 first-class matches and has one fifty-plus score to his name. The youngster caught everyone's attention with a century in Youth Tests. Flintoff had an alpha personality both on and off the field and once was caught in a heated verbal fight with India's World Cup Star Yuvraj Singh during T20 World Cup 2007. Yuvraj while recalling the brawl in an Instagram live with Kevin Pietersen revealed - "I think Freddie bowled two good balls and he bowled a yorker which I managed to hit for a boundary. Then he told me that this was a dash shot, he got pretty elaborative. He said I am gonna cut your throat off and then I replied saying you see this bat in my hand? You know where I am gonna hit you with this bat. I remember I was so angry when I hit Broadie for six sixes, I looked at Dimitri Mascarenas and then I looked at Freddie.
