"North East now gateway to Southeast Asia": Kiren Rijiju at Rising Northeast Investors Summit

India Gazette23-05-2025

New Delhi [India], May 23 (ANI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Friday that the Northeast region has emerged as India's gateway to Southeast Asia, adding that geographical isolation is an old concept and that they are at the forefront of development. He made the remarks while speaking at the Rising Northeast Investors Summit held in Delhi.
'The North East is now the gateway to Southeast Asian countries. India's Act East policy begins from the North East. Geographical isolation is an old concept; we are at the forefront of the development,' Rijiju said during the summit.
Rijiju said the Act East policy, which focuses on strengthening economic and strategic ties with Southeast Asian countries, begins from the Northeast. He emphasised that the region was now central to India's growth and international outreach.
He also said that the northeastern region has become very progressive and advanced because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision.
'The government of India has focused on the Northeast, from infrastructure to the farm sector to tourism and hydropower, and in every sphere,' he added.
Rijiju also said, 'The northeastern region is becoming a major economic hub of our country, and all sectors are rising, so people from industries and all backgrounds are participating. I'm very happy that the Northeastern region is no longer lagging behind in any sphere. Rather, it is progressing very fast. It doesn't matter now.'
The two-day maiden 'Rising Northeast: The Investors' Summit 2025' is being held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital to showcase the investment and trade potential of the Northeast Region on May 23 and 24, said a release.
Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, on Friday highlighted the transformative progress of the North Eastern states over the last decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the Rising North East Investors Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, the minister emphasised the government's commitment to the region's development. Scindia announced that gross budgetary support for the north-eastern region has seen a dramatic rise, from a mere 10 per cent to enabling an investment of nearly Rs 6.75 lakh crore in the last ten years.
This significant allocation, he noted, has been a game changer in redefining the growth trajectory of the region, turning it into a land of opportunity. He said, 'It is our very own Prime Minister who, over the past ten years, has increased the gross budgetary support from 10 per cent to enable an investment of nearly Rs 6.75 lakh crore in the North Eastern region'.The summit, aimed at attracting both global and domestic investors, sought to spotlight the immense economic potential of the North East.
The minister remarked that the region of the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, has for thousands of years been a cradle of India's ancient culture and commercial vibrancy.'There was a time when these eight states served as South Asia's global trading hubs, making a significant contribution in connecting the East to the West through both land and water routes,' he stated.
Furthermore, Scindia said that in the seventy years following India's independence, the region had remained neglected and in the shadows.'In the past ten years, the destiny and story of this entire region have transformed. And the architect of that transformation stands before us today in the form of our esteemed Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ji,' he said, praising PM Modi as the architect of this transformation.
Recounting past infrastructure gaps, the minister shared that N-E region once had only nine airports, and two states lacked any airports at all. Under PM Modi's leadership, the number of airports in N-E has risen to seventeen, giving the region a new thrust in connectivity and economic integration.
Organised by the Ministry of DoNER in partnership with FICCI and Invest India, The Rising North East Investors Summit, which PM Modi inaugurated, is a two-day event taking place on 23rd and 24th May at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The summit aims to highlight the North East region as a land of opportunity and attract both global and domestic investment. (ANI)

It has been proposed that the educational book/tour allowance should be increased from Rs 1,000 per year to Rs 5,000 per student per year, applicable to students in their second and third years, the statement added. It is not merely a revision of numbers, but a conscious step to strengthen the foundation on which our future artisans stand. "Even modest support, when thoughtfully directed, can empower students to complete their training with dignity and contribute meaningfully to the revival and modernization of traditional crafts," said Industries minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. These enhanced rates are proposed to take effect from the academic session 2025-26. It is pertinent to note that the current rates have remained unchanged since 2009-10 and no revisions have been made since then. Allowing Maha to accept foreign aid: Kerala alleges political bias

1 2 3 T'puram: Kerala has questioned Centre's decision to allow Maharashtra to receive foreign contributions, alleging political bias. Finance minister K N Balagopal told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday that Centre is showing selective discrimination in permitting foreign aid, particularly towards opposition-ruled states. Recently, Centre approved foreign contributions to the Maharashtra chief minister's relief fund under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). This is the first time Centre has granted an FCRA licence to a state govt's account. The fund is registered as a trust and the approval is specifically for receiving donations for social work. Balagopal said that though the permission granted to Maharashtra is reasonable under such circumstances, this move contradicts Centre's earlier stand during the 2018 Kerala floods, when countries including the UAE offered substantial aid. The UAE pledged Rs 700 crore, but the Union home ministry denied Kerala permission to accept it, despite a formal request from the state govt. The decision had sparked widespread controversy. "Disasters, not politics, should be the criterion," the minister said. Balagopal said that during Covid-19 pandemic, Centre allowed foreign donations to the PM CARES Fund through a special account while Kerala was denied similar approval. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like People Born 1940-1975 With No Life Insurance Could Be Eligible For This Reassured Get Quote Undo He said Centre's decision in favour of Maharashtra triggered opposition from several non-BJP ruled states, which see it as discriminatory. He also said Maharashtra govt's perceived closeness to the ruling front at Centre leads other states, including Kerala, to believe that this played a role in the decision. He also criticized BJP leaders who, at the time, made remarks blaming the floods on beef consumption in the state. The minister also expressed disappointment that Centre has not provided any aid for Mundakkai-Chooralmala so far and did not announce any support during the Vizhinjam commission period either. He urged Centre to uphold equal standards for all states and not allow political considerations to influence disaster relief decisions.

New Delhi: Anil Agarwal-led mining firm Vedanta Ltd on Friday, May 30 said the committee of directors has approved raising up to Rs 5,000 crore via issuance of debentures. The committee approved the issuance of 5 lakh unsecured, rated, listed, redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs) of face value of Rs 1 lakh each on a private placement basis, according to a regulatory filing by Vedanta. 'The duly authorised committee of directors at its meeting held today has considered and approved the issuance of unsecured, rated, listed, redeemable, non-convertible debentures (NCDs) on a private placement basis aggregating up to Rs 5,000 crore,' the company said in the filing. In the January-March quarter, Vedanta reported a 154.4 per cent growth in its consolidated net profit to Rs 3,483 crore which was pushed by lower production costs and higher volumes. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 1,369 crore in the year-ago period. During Q4 FY25, its income rose to Rs 41,216 crore from Rs 36,093 crore in the year-ago period. As on March 31, 2025, the company's gross debt stood at Rs 73,853 crore. A top official of the company said that the demerger of its businesses is expected by the end of September this year. 'We are on track to finish (the demerger) by the second quarter end,' said Vedanta CFO Ajay Goel while talking to news agency PTI. Vedanta Ltd is one of the world's leading natural resources, critical minerals, energy, and technology companies spanning across India, South Africa, Namibia, Liberia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan with significant operations in sectors like oil and gas, zinc, lead, silver, copper, iron ore and steel. The appellate tribunal National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has stayed the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) orders against the demerger of the multinational mining company into separate entities and subsequent listing. The Mumbai bench of NCLT had on March 4, 2025 rejected the first motion petition moved for the composite scheme of arrangement between Vedanta in the matter of Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd (TSPL), observing that 'material facts have not been disclosed' regarding its debt obligations, which was against the Companies Act.
