MNS accuses rivals of luring voters with cash in BEST credit society poll
Election for the BEST credit society, controlled by the Shiv Sena (UBT), is taking place on Monday. Its members are employees of the BEST undertaking, the civic transport and electricity provider public body.
The poll comes amid speculation of a possible alliance between the Shiv Sena (UBT) headed by Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for the forthcoming local body polls in the state.
In a video shared on X, Deshpande claimed a member of the BEST credit society received a pamphlet and in it was concealed an envelope with two Rs 500 notes.
'This game is to buy votes," he charged.
Deshpande said a formal complaint about this will be lodged with the election officer.
The Sena (UBT) and the MNS have formed 'Utkarsh panel' to contest the BEST credit society election. The panel comprises 21 members, of whom 18 are from the Shiv Sena (UBT), two from the MNS and one is from an association of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Leaders of the Sena (UBT) and the MNS have said the latter does not have enough strength in the BEST, but this poll will give the two parties a platform to come together ahead of the local body elections in the state. PTI PR GK

Advocate demands Rs 5L from NAC executive officer for waterlogging, property damage
Bhubaneswar: An advocate has taken legal action against the executive officer (EO) of Banpur NAC in Khurda district, seeking a compensation of Rs 5 lakh after his home got flooded during recent rainfall. Sitaram Agrawal claimed that his residence, located in ward 10 under the NAC, was repeatedly flooded with rainwater. Despite bringing the issue to the attention of the EO, no resolution was provided, he alleged. Agrawal earlier filed a writ petition before the Orissa high court, which directed the EO to address the flooding issue. However, according to Agrawal, the EO did not comply with the court's directive. "Ignoring the direction of the high court and with a careless attitude, the EO, with the intention to harass me, demolished the soak pit in front of my house," Agrawal stated. He further alleged that the demolition, carried out on May 23, blocked the entrance and drainage path of his home. The advocate claimed that the lack of a proper drainage system led to the accumulation of rainwater, resulting in different diseases affecting his family and significant expenditure on repairs. "We spent lakhs of rupees on treatment and repairing the affected parts of our house due to flooding," Agrawal added. Agrawal also accused the EO of using arbitrary powers to discriminate against him, noting that other encroachments in the ward were not addressed. "It shows the EO's mala fide intention to harass me both mentally and financially," he alleged. In response to his grievances, Agrawal issued a legal notice to the EO, demanding compensation for the damages, losses and medical expenses incurred by him and his family. The EO could not be contacted for his comments on the issue. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). FIRs against those who insulted tricolour at Thunag will be cancelled if they apologise: HP CM
Last month, BJP workers in Janjheli and Thunag areas, which suffered massive losses in recent disasters, held a protest and allegedly threw shoes and black flags on Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi's vehicle carrying the national flag during his visit to the area. Participating in a discussion in the Assembly on natural disasters, he said the government would not allow any person to insult the tricolour. Shimla, Aug 18 (PTI) Police FIRs registered against people who insulted the national flag at Thunag would be cancelled only if they tender an apology, said Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday. Mandi Police has booked more than 50 people under BNS sections 126 (2) (wrongful restraint), 189 (2) (unlawful assembly), 190 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), and 191 (2) (rioting). Janjheli and Thunag come under the Seraj Assembly constituency represented by former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur. Addressing the legislative assembly, CM Sukhu said the relief package for Seraj would not be confined to that region only, but would be uniformly distributed across the state. He added that Rs 250 crore had been released for people hit by the 2023 disaster, and the second instalment could not be released as some people had no land to build houses. Sukhu said that the government was ready to provide funds for shelter homes, but it was not possible for them to give other land for the purpose unless the Forest Conservation Act and the Forest Rights Act were amended to provide land in forest areas. Seeking the opposition's cooperation in this matter, he urged Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur to accompany him to Delhi to seek the Union Environment Ministry's approval, as not one biswa (45 sq mts) of forest land could be diverted without these laws being amended. Refuting the allegations of not providing help to the disaster-hit Seraj Assembly segment, the chief minister said he was the first to reach Seraj after the disaster, while the deputy chief minister, ministers and officers were engaged in relief works. Thakur was provided an NDRF helicopter, at the expense of the Congress government, for him to visit the far-flung areas of his constituency, Sukhu said. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said the Jal Shakti department alone suffered a loss of over Rs 300 crore. Officers and staffers of the department worked round the clock to temporarily restore the water supply, but huge funds are required for their permanent restoration, for which central help is required, he told the House.
