Pep Guardiola takes aim at Pierluigi Collina after Rico Lewis hit with new ban

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has let rip at FIFA and Pierluigi Collina after learning that Rico Lewis will now serve a three game ban after his suspension was upgraded
Pep Guardiola has taken a swipe at FIFA referees' boss Pierluigi Collina after Rico Lewis' ban was extended to three games.
Manchester City 's England defender Lewis will miss his club's final Group match with Juventus and their first knockout game after his suspension was upgraded. That comes on top of City striker Claudio Echeverri being ruled out for the rest of the Club World Cup after suffering an ankle injury.

City boss Guardiola suggested that Collina was just trying to exert his authority and insisted Lewis's challenge on Wydad's Samuel Obeng was purely accidental as he is not a dirty player.

Guardiola said: 'I don't know the boss for the referees, Collina? I didn't have the honour to talk to him. I am pretty sure the referee don't know Rico. Sometimes as a defender you have to be more aggressive but both on the floor and the reaction.
'I know it could be tough. It is Rico Lewis, I can imagine what would happen with another type of player. It is what it is, three games and he can be with his girlfriend and hopefully be back for the next games if we go through.
'I know Rico and the intention was never to hurt anyone. If FIFA want to show how huge they are, send me three games and we move forward.'
Argentina forward Echeverri limped out of City's last game with Al Ain and has been in a protective boot since. Guardiola admitted he does not think he will be back in time for the end of the tournament even of City go all the way in the United States.
City are set to make changes against Juventus again but they need to beat the Italian champions to finish top of the Group and avoid a potential last 16 meeting with Real Madrid in Miami next Tuesday. They will also have to cope with the sweltering heat in Orlando in a 3pm kick-off against Juventus.

Guardiola said: 'Problems in the ankle, two three weeks out. Unfortunately. I feel so sorry for him. We will play new players and in the next game too and in the second half.
'The selection has that in mind. In these conditions we are not ready to play 90 minutes and at half-time we will make substitutions.
'The heat is obvious. We can't change it. It's netter to change at the Atlanta stadium which is fantastic. All the teams have to handle it. The next World Cup, people know it already. We have to be ready to suffer.'

Monterrey down Urawa with quick-fire treble to reach Club World Cup last 16

LOS ANGELES, June 25 (Reuters) - Monterrey booked a spot in the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup with a thumping 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday to claim second place in Group E and set up a last 16 meeting with Borussia Dortmund. Three goals in eight first-half minutes sent Monterrey on their way to victory, with stunning long-range strikes from Nelson Deossa and Jesus Corona coming either side of German Berterame's cool finish. Deossa put Monterrey in front on the half-hour mark with a swerving shot from 35 yards and Berterame doubled the advantage four minutes later. Corona added the third with the pick of the goals from distance in the 38th minute before Berterame added the fourth in second-half stoppage time. The win, coupled with Inter Milan's 2-0 victory over River Plate, means Monterrey finish second and will take on Dortmund in Atlanta on Tuesday.

Inter Milan strike late to progress with 2-0 win over River Plate

SEATTLE, Washington, June 25 (Reuters) - Inter Milan scored twice in the last 18 minutes to beat River Plate 2-0 on Wednesday and progress to the knockout stage of the Club World Cup as Group E winners and send the Argentines home. Sebastiano Esposito scored Inter's first goal seven minutes after River had been reduced to 10 men by the dismissal of Lucas Martinez Quarta, and Alessandro Bastoni added the second in stoppage time. The 20-times Italian champions will face Brazilian club Fluminese in the last 16 in Charlotte on Monday with Monterrey, who beat Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0, going through in second place a point ahead of River. Martinez Quarta was shown the red card for bringing down Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the last defender with his teammate Gonzalo Montiel also dismissed for two yellow cards after a fracas in stoppage time.

Man City's Echeverri likely to miss rest of Club World Cup with ankle injury

June 26 (Reuters) - Manchester City attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri is likely to miss the rest of the Club World Cup after suffering a twisted ankle during their 6-0 win over Al-Ain, manager Pep Guardiola said on Wednesday. The 19-year-old Argentina international scored from a free kick as City ensured qualification for the knockout stages with their second group-stage win in a row on Sunday, but could not continue after halftime due to the injury. "He has some problems with his ankle. It'll be two or three weeks out unfortunately. I feel so sorry for him, for all of us," Guardiola told reporters ahead of their final Group G match against Juventus on Thursday. City are tied with Juventus on six points but sit second in the group. The runner-up plays the winner of Group H in the round of 16, which is currently Real Madrid.
