PKL Season 12: Puneri Paltan aim to reclaim the title with core and strengthened squad
Puneri Paltan have been one of the most consistent teams in the league, having reached the Playoffs in six out of the 11 editions. However, they finished a disappointing eighth last season with just nine wins in 22 games.
Ahead of Season 12, Puneri Paltan announced former Indian kabaddi captain Ajay Thakur as their head coach. The 39-year-old has been promoted to the role of head coach after he was appointed as their assistant coach in Season 11.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest kabaddi players of all time, Ajay was part of the Indian kabaddi team that won gold medals at the 2014 Asian Games and the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. He was awarded the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award in 2019.
Having featured in the first seven editions of the Pro Kabaddi League as a player, Ajay ended his illustrious PKL career with 816 points in 121 matches, including 794 raid points and 22 tackle points.
Meanwhile, Puneri Paltan appointed Ashok Shinde as the head strategist for the upcoming season. He was earlier named their head coach in the middle of last season after BC Ramesh stepped down.
Despite missing out on a Playoffs spot last campaign, Puneri Paltan decided to retain most of their players for the forthcoming season. Additionally, the Season 10 winners added eight new players at the PKL Season 12 Player Auction to assemble a formidable squad for a total amount of INR 5 crore. With that in mind, let's have a closer look at Puneri Paltan's strengths and weaknesses ahead of Pro Kabaddi Season 12.
Strengths
One of Puneri Paltan's undeniable strengths heading into PKL Season 12 is their strong raiding unit. Ahead of PKL Season 12 Player Auction, Puneri Paltan ensured they retained Pankaj Mohite, who was their standout raider last season with 110 raid points in 22 matches. Furthermore, they managed to retain their experienced raider, Mohit Goyat, who contributed 83 raid points in 19 games last season. Puneri Paltan have also retained their captain, Aslam Inamdar, who will once again play a key role in their attack. Earlier, in Season 11, Puneri Paltan lost momentum after their skipper Aslam was ruled out due to a knee injury.
Later, at the Season 12 Player Auction, Puneri Paltan further strengthened their attack by acquiring the services of star raider Sachin Tanwar for INR 1.058 crore. Considered to be one of the top raiders in the league, Sachin has already accumulated 1,034 raid points in 145 matches in his stellar PKL career.
Puneri Paltan have also signed Iranian raiders Mohammad Esmaeil Nabibakhsh (INR 13 lacs), Milad Mohajer (INR 13.50 lacs) and Indian raider Stuwart Singh (INR 13 lacs) to reinforce their raiding department.
Weaknesses
While Puneri Paltan's attack looks strong on paper, their defence could be a potential weakness in Pro Kabaddi Season 12. Even though they managed to retain their star right cover Abinesh Nadarajan ahead of PKL Season 12 Player Auction, they failed to sign any backup for Abinesh in the right cover position. Hence, any injury or loss in form for Abinesh could risk their chances of success in the upcoming season.
Apart from Vishal Bhardwaj and Gaurav Khatri, Puneri Paltan lack well-established defenders in their corner positions. Despite racking up 324 tackle points in 118 matches, Vishal will make a return to Pro Kabaddi after he went unsold in the Season 11 Player Auction. It will be interesting to see how Vishal performs after being out of the auction for one full season. As a result, a lot will depend on the right corner, Gaurav Khatri, who was their standout defender last season with 61 tackle points in 21 games.
Opportunities
As far as opportunities are concerned, Puneri Paltan have several talented youngsters who will be aiming to hog the limelight in PKL Season 12. All-rounder Mohd Amaan is one such player who will be looking to grab his opportunities after Puneri Paltan used their Final Bid Match (FBM) card to retain him for two seasons for INR 35 lacs. Playing in the left corner position, Amaan showcased his talent and played 14 matches for Puneri Paltan in Season 11.
On the other hand, Ajay Thakur will have the opportunity to repay Puneri Paltan's faith after being promoted as head coach of the Pune-based team. In his short stint as assistant coach, the former Indian kabaddi star got the best out of Puneri Paltan in the few matches he guided them through last season.
Threats
One of the biggest concerns for Puneri Paltan will be the fitness of their captain, Aslam Inamdar. Star all-rounder Aslam will make a comeback in Pro Kabaddi Season 12 after missing the majority of last season. The 25-year-old played seven games in Season 11 and was later ruled out after he suffered a meniscus tear in his knee, which required a surgical operation. With 480 raid points and 65 tackle points in 70 games, Aslam's numbers are pretty impressive, and hence his fitness will determine how Puneri Paltan's upcoming campaign pans out.
One potential area where Puneri Paltan could perhaps have done better during the Season 12 Player Auction was to sign another quality right cover. The PKL Season 10 champions currently only have Abinesh Nadarajan in the right cover position.
While Vishal Bhardwaj has decent experience in Pro Kabaddi, his performances have dipped over the last few seasons. The likes of Mohd Amaan and Rakesh will need to step in at the left corner position to provide support to the right corner, Gaurav Khatri.

With fantasy gaming being outlawed, cricket to feel the heat
Mumbai: Whether it was captain Ajinkya Rahane playing IPL 2025's opening tie in Kolkata Knight Riders' purple and gold or skipper Shreyas Iyer playing the final wearing Punjab King's orange, they had one common link – Dream11 flashed prominently on their jerseys. With fantasy gaming being outlawed, cricket to feel the heat Following the 'Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025' being passed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, IPL franchises could be left scrambling for alternate sponsors when the regulation becomes law. Dream11 is the industry leader in fantasy gaming and is set to be directly affected as the government moves to outlaw 'money gaming platforms'. Fantasy gaming was previously considered a game of skill. Once the bill in its current form becomes an Act, it will not be seen as one. Sponsorship is not the only avenue for generating cricket revenue that will be impacted. If fantasy gaming goes out of business, it is set to have a cascading effect on the entire revenue chain. 'Fantasy gaming apps have a symbiotic relationship in sponsorships as well as advertising. Once they become a lead sponsor in a tournament like IPL, they buy advertising time with the broadcasters. To make those creatives, they sign cricket stars for endorsement. It began as a sunshine sector a decade back and grew into a major player,' an industry executive, who did not wish to be identified, said. Chennai Super Kings had Vision11 as one of their sponsors. Suresh Raina was picked as a leading endorser. Last year, Sourav Ganguly-endorsed My11Circle became 'official partners' with IPL when it shelled out ₹625 crore for five years. It outbid Dream11, which in turn, made its move by picking up lead jersey sponsorship with five IPL franchises. With the remaining five franchises, who had pre-existing sponsors, the company bought alternate slots – with a few on the jersey sleeve, some on the helmet. The unspent money ( ₹515 crore) from the losing bid was spent to keep the brand in circulation during the tournament. According to industry estimates, 70 percent of fantasy gaming revenue is churned out during IPL. 'There will be a definite impact. One will have to explore alternative segments to fill the sponsorship slot if fantasy gaming ceases to exist,' a chief executive with an IPL franchise said. Outside IPL, Dream11's lead sponsorship deal with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) worth ₹358 crore that runs until next year's T20 World Cup will also come into question. If the regulation goes through, the Indian cricket team may no longer sport Dream11 on the jersey. So invested has Dream11 been – it is estimated to have 90 percent share of the fantasy gaming market – in cricket sponsorships that between 2018-23 it had a (gaming) partnership with the International Cricket Council (ICC) too. Dream11 was yet to respond to a HT query on the impact the bill may have on their association with BCCI and IPL franchises. Many current and former cricketers also have endorsement deals with the companies in their individual capacity. Last week, the Enforcement Directorate recorded the statement of ex-India allrounder Suresh Raina as part of its larger money laundering probe against many illegal online platforms that use multiple platforms for surrogate advertisements and collect funds from their users. Cricket though has faced headwinds before - be it Chinese mobile makers feeling the heat or the IPL spot-fixing scandal resulting in Pepsi dropping out. Each time, cricket's popular appeal has attracted an alternate sponsor. 'At the top level, talking about Indian cricket and the IPL, they will have someone else stepping in. But for the state level cricket leagues, it may not be easy because for them gaming was a major sponsor,' said lawyer Vidushpat Singhania, who specialises in sports and gaming laws. As per the bill, the government wishes to protect the youth from 'predatory online Real Money Gaming apps – that manipulate them through misleading 'monetary return promises' into compulsive and addictive playing, that leaves entire families in financial distress'. Industry bodies that include Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS) of which Dream11 is a founding member have written to the Union government seeking its intervention, arguing that a blanket prohibition would strike 'a death knell' for what they call a legitimate, job-creating industry.

YoYo Test no longer only benchmark in Indian cricket, Gautam Gambhir's recruit introduces Bronco Test
In a move to raise the fitness standards of Indian cricketers, head coach Gautam Gambhir and strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux have introduced the Bronco Test as a new benchmark alongside the existing Yo-Yo test and 2-kilometre time trial. India head coach Gautam Gambhir speaks to Jasprit Bumrah during practice(Action Images via Reuters) Traditionally used in rugby, the Bronco Test is designed to assess aerobic endurance and push players' cardiovascular limits. The Indian Express has reported that the idea to incorporate the test came from le Roux, who rejoined the Indian team in June. He previously worked with Team India in the early 2000s and has had stints with Cricket South Africa, IPL franchises Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings. The decision comes in the wake of India's recent five-Test series in England, where the management identified sub-par fitness levels among some fast bowlers. Mohammed Siraj was the only pacer to play all five Tests, raising concerns about the conditioning and durability of the rest of the pace unit. Le Roux is understood to have advised that fast bowlers in particular focus on increasing their running workload, rather than being overly reliant on gym-based training. What is a Bronco Test? The Bronco Test will now form part of the Indian team's fitness protocol. It involves five continuous sets of shuttle runs covering 20, 40 and 60 metres, totalling 1,200 metres without a break. Players have been asked to complete the entire sequence in six minutes. Some top players have already undergone the test at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. With Gambhir backing the move, the Bronco Test is set to be a key fitness evaluation tool going forward. The BCCI has long used the Yo-Yo test and 2km time trial as fitness markers for selection, but the inclusion of the Bronco adds a fresh layer of challenge focused specifically on endurance and match-readiness. The test is expected to be particularly crucial for players vying for places in the Test and ODI squads, where sustained physical performance over longer periods remains essential.

What is the Bronco Test proposed by BCCI to improve players' fitness level?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has tightened its focus on player fitness, introducing new measures to help cricketers cope with extended seasons. After mandating the Yo-Yo Test for selection, the board has now proposed the Bronco Test, a rugby-inspired drill designed to improve stamina and agility through shuttle runs. What is Bronco Test? The Bronco Test measures aerobic capacity and endurance through repeated shuttle runs. Players run 20 metres, then 40 metres, and then 60 metres, completing one set. This sequence is repeated five times in succession without a break, covering a total of 1,200 metres. Why is Bronco Test being introduced? The push for the Bronco Test comes after India's 2025 Anderson Tendulkar Trophy campaign, where several players, especially fast bowlers, struggled with injuries. Of the six pacers picked for the series, only Mohammed Siraj managed to feature in all five Tests without fitness issues. Special focus on pacers India's strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux has urged fast bowlers to focus on building endurance through running rather than relying solely on gym training, a recommendation backed by head coach Gautam Gambhir. Indian players have been set a target of finishing the drill within six minutes, making it a demanding challenge that tests stamina, speed, and recovery ability. Unlike strength-heavy gym workouts, the test focuses on sustained running, making it particularly relevant for pace bowlers. Bronco Test already in use The Bronco Test is already being conducted at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. While the Yo-Yo Test and the 2-km time trial have long been standard benchmarks for cricketers, the Bronco Test has been added to raise fitness standards further. Several contracted players have already undergone the test to establish consistent benchmarks. How does Bronco Test compare with Yo-Yo Test? The Yo-Yo Test, still in use by the Indian team, involves shuttle runs between two markers 20 metres apart at progressively increasing speeds dictated by audio beeps. After each 40-metre run, players get 10 seconds to recover before the pace increases. The test continues until the player can no longer keep up with the beeps, with Level 17.1 set as the minimum benchmark. Bigger picture With the introduction of the Bronco Test, Indian cricket's fitness framework is evolving beyond gym strength. By combining the Yo-Yo Test, the 2-km time trial, and now the Bronco Test, the BCCI is working to ensure players are not just strong but also match-fit, capable of sustaining high performance over long matches and series.
