Green Cards in limbo: What to know as replacement wait times surge across the US
From 1 January to 31 March 2025, USCIS took an average of 8.3 months to process an I-90 application. Just a few months earlier, between October and December 2024, the median wait time was less than a month, about 0.8 months.

US immigration system is under immense pressure
Immigration courts currently face a record-breaking 3.7 million pending cases. Green card holders are required to file Form I-90 every 10 years or sooner if their cards are lost, damaged, or contain errors.
The agency's website currently states that '80 per cent of cases for 'initial issuance or replacements' for I-90 are completed within 21.5 months,' while 10-year renewal cases are completed in '12.5 months' for 80 per cent of applicants.
Notably, between January and March 2025, USCIS received over 285,000 I-90 applications. That's a significant increase from the 189,000 submitted in the previous quarter. By the end of March, there were more than 356,000 I-90 applications still pending up from 265,000 just three months earlier.
This isn't the first time USCIS has struggled with fluctuating processing times. In FY2024, the agency had dramatically improved processing, bringing the average down to 1.1 months from 9.1 months in 2023. In 2022, the average was 1.2 months, while it stood at 5.2 months in 2021.
Interestingly, USCIS announced in September 2024 that green cards would remain valid for 36 months beyond the listed expiration date for lawful permanent residents who had filed for renewal.

'These receipt notices can be presented with an expired Green Card as evidence of continued status and employment authorization. This extension is expected to help applicants who experience longer processing times, because they will receive proof of lawful permanent resident status as they await their renewed Green Card,' USCIS noted.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind team visits eviction site, sets up shelters
Guwahati: A delegation from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani faction) visited Goalpara district in lower Assam on Tuesday to assess the aftermath of a recent eviction drive and helped set up temporary shelters for those evicted. The recent eviction drives at Hahilabil (also known as Hasilabil) and Ashudubi in Goalpara's Paikan led to the demolition of approximately 4,000 houses, primarily affecting Bengali-origin migrant Muslim families. The delegation comprised five members, led by the organisation's general secretary, Maulana Hakim Uddin Qasimi. The ASJU provided assistance by establishing temporary shelters, while local organisations and residents offered essential humanitarian support, including food provisions. The delegation engaged with affected families and evaluated the conditions at the demolition. "Whatever has happened in Goalpara was painful. People of our own country are being evicted. Govt first needs to arrange shelter for them, then other decisions may be taken," Hakim Uddin said, noting the deprivation of basic necessities and advised the displaced residents to remain patient. The organisation submitted a memorandum to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma through the district magistrate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kassel: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo The document criticised the demolition as discriminatory, highlighting its focus on Muslim-majority areas, while sparing similar settlements of other communities. The memorandum emphasised that many affected families resided in these areas for over seven decades and possessed legitimate Indian citizenship. Many were previously displaced by the Brahmaputra's erosion. A preliminary report by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal and Hafiz Bashir Ahmad Qasmi detailed that demolitions from Nov 2023 to July 2025 affected 8,115 families across Goalpara, Dhubri, and Nalbari districts.

Ulfa-I will not strike its own people in retaliation: Himanta
Guwahati: After United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (Ulfa-I) chief Paresh Baruah vowed to retaliate for the alleged attack on their camps in Myanmar, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said he is hopeful that Baruah will not strike his own people in Assam, which is also his (Baruah's) homeland. On Sunday, the banned insurgent outfit Ulfa-I claimed that three of its cadres were killed in a targeted drone attack by the Indian Army on its mobile camps in Myanmar. Ulfa-I said the strikes killed its senior leader Nayan Asom, while 19 other cadres were injured. Sarma reiterated that when contacted, the Centre informed the state govt that they have no information about the attack on ULFA-I camps. "Assam govt has no official information about any strike till now. Govt of India has not informed us that there was any strike. So, whatever we learnt, we learnt only from the statement of Paresh Baruah. We do not have any other additional information," Sarma said. He clarified that Assam police is neither involved nor aware of any such strike on ULFA-I camps. "I don't think there will be retaliation. He (Paresh Baruah) is from Assam, so why will he retaliate on Assam? If they hurl a bomb, it will harm Assam's land, damage Assam's schools. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Discover Why These Off-Plan Dubai Apartments Sell Fast? Meanwhile, Congress's Gaurav Gogoi said CM Sarma must be aware of the strike on Ulfa-I camps. "Many are saying Operation Sindoor took place again. For us, the black days of secret killings have returned, targeting our elder brothers," Gaurav added.

Farmers demand fair compensation for land acquired for power transmission lines
Members of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers' Association have demanded fair compensation for farmers who have lost their agricultural lands to the 66/11 kV and 220 kV power transmission lines passing through their fields under the Hunsur sub-division from the Gejjeyanavaddaragudi power station. The farmers, who took part in a protest, condemned the authorities for fixing compensation without providing proper information or holding consultations with landowners. They alleged that the officials prepared 'false reports' and fixed compensation without their consent. 'A minimum compensation of ₹6 lakh a gunta should be fixed,' the farmers demanded, pointing out that land prices in layout areas (in Kadakola and Vajamangala areas where power transmission lines also pass through their fields) range between ₹6 lakh and ₹10 lakh a gunta, while the authorities are offering ₹50,000 to ₹60,000, which they described as inadequate. They urged the district administration to withdraw the mandatory Aadhaar registration and meter installation for agricultural pumpset users, continue the Akrama-Sakrama (regularisation) scheme for pumpsets, and provide free electricity connections to farmers whose lands are affected by the high-tension I-Power lines. They also demanded electricity connections to houses constructed within orchards and agricultural fields for the benefit of students and elderly residents. Additional Deputy Commissioner Shivraj received the memorandum from farmers in the absence of Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy. The association's State prganising secretary Attahalli Devaraj, district general secretary Baradanapura Nagaraj, district vice-president Marballi Neelakanthappa, and nearly 100 farmers took part in the protest.
