Kansas City Chiefs OL coach Andy Heck recaps Josh Simmons' preseason debut

During Tuesday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs offensive line coach Andy Heck shared his thoughts on rookie left tackle Josh Simmons' preseason debut last Saturday. "It's a big job for anybody coming in to learn the details of the offense, assignments (and) techniques. Every play has a thousand little details and so picking those things up, that was job one in the spring where he (Josh Simmons) was doing less physical work with us." said Heck, "Since he has gotten to training camp, he's been able to every day add one or two of these details that are important to each play. So, I've seen him steadily improve, and his understanding - and we're able to have better conversations about what's going on and I think that'swhat we'll see his trajectory do is just go like this (points up)." Simmons played briefly in the starting lineup against the Arizona Cardinals but made a positive impression. Heck was happy with Simmons' performance, but refuses to compare him to anyone he's worked with through his coaching career. "I'd hesitate to compare guys; every guy is different. I'm still in a learning process myself, of what makes him (Josh Simmons) tick, how does he learn best (and) how can I help him get better? There's constant communication there," said Heck, "But I would say he's certainly as talented a player as I've ever been around. He loves the game. So, those are two good things: when you're talented and you love the game, and you want to be the best, you've got a great chance to be a good one." Simmons earned Third-Team All-Big Ten honors for the 2024 National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes. Saturday's game was his first since suffering a patellar tendon injury, ending his college career.

Mets' Carlos Mendoza Responds to Clay Holmes Rotation Question As Concerns Grow

Early in the season, the New York Mets looked like geniuses for signing Holmes, a two-time All-Star closer who hadn't started a game since 2018, to convert back into a starter. But the second half of the season was always going to be the real test. After putting up a 2.97 ERA in 88 innings over his first 16 starts, Holmes has compiled a 5.45 ERA since the start of July, tossing 38 innings over eight starts. On Tuesday, he had his worst outing of the year, allowing a season-high five earned runs and only making it through 3 2/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves. (Photo by)The whole Mets rotation is in flux right now, as Frankie Montas was demoted to the bullpen and top prospects Brandon Sproat and Nolan McLean loom as options to take over one or two spots. However, when asked if Holmes might be a candidate to be removed from the rotation as well, manager Carlos Mendoza brushed aside the question after the eventual 13-5 Mets win on Tuesday. "When you have a night like (this), you're always going to start questioning. But he's coming off an outing with five innings, 75-pitch efficiency," Mendoza said, per Brian Lewis of the New York Post. "He keeps saying he's fine, the sinker is 96 (mph), the movement. He just had a hard time throwing that pitch for strikes. So we'll continue to check on him, continue to make sure we're not missing anything. He's a big part of this team." Even if Holmes keeps his rotation spot, it's difficult to say with certainty whether he'll take the mound to start a playoff game. At his best, he's been one of the keys to the Mets' success, but his recent struggles, combined with his new career-high in innings, makes for an interesting storyline to follow as the season progresses. But hey, the Mets also broke a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday, so Holmes' bad day sure isn't the end of the world. Blue Jays Boss Breaks Silence on Bo Bichette's Next Contract

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Toronto Blue Jays enjoyed another win on Tuesday, maintaining their strong lead in the American League East division as several star players prove their worth. After signing a $500 million extension with the team, first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has turned in a fifth-consecutive All-Star campaign with a stellar .300/.399/.490 slash line so far. And his long-time running mate, Bo Bichette, is surging right alongside him and making a strong case for his own blockbuster deal. In his seventh season with the Blue Jays, Bichette is slashing .297/.337/.468 with 16 homers after a harsh decline at the plate last year. As he heads toward free agency at the end of the season, that production is putting some pressure on the Blue Jays to retain him. "On the active roster, the Jays have at least five pending free agents. None is more important than Bo Bichette, who's on pace to lead the AL in hits for a third time," Mitch Bannon wrote for The Athletic. "The Jays rarely sign extensions in the middle of seasons, though Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s $500 million contract earlier this year was a notable exception." (Photo by) More Martin/Getty Even though the Blue Jays seem unlikely to keep Bichette from reaching free agency with an extension, team president Mark Shapiro spoke out about negotiating a new contract with the shortstop, vowing to engage in talks in the near future. "I'm confident that, at the right time, we'll make an effort to (keep Bichette)," Shapiro said, per Bannon. At just 27 years old, Bichette is likely to earn a long-term deal reaching nine figures after this season. Spotrac projects that to be worth $147.9 million over seven seasons. So, if Shapiro plans to make the kind of effort that has a real chance of convincing Bichette to stay in Toronto, the team will have to prepare for another big contract on the books.
