Kate Middleton shares stamp of approval for ‘pacing' parenting technique

Miami Herald3 days ago
Kate Middleton is continuing her support for early social and emotional development in children.
On Aug. 6, the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood released a series of animated videos rooted in science to help parents better support their kids through early childhood.
The series includes seven videos, one of which explains a parenting technique known as 'pacing.'
In the YouTube video, titled 'Creating space for connection,' the narrator details how adults are inclined to move through life quickly, which differs from the slow-paced environment kids generally learn in.
'That's because everything they're experiencing is still new to them,' the narrator explains. 'And the tools they need to process all of this information are still being developed.'
For example, adults pick up on facial expressions and mood changes quickly, while many kids don't.
The narrator argues that slowing things down for children and allowing them to learn in an environment tailored to their pace can help children 'make sense of the world' around them.
Not doing so could result in an overwhelmed child, which often leads to a stressed or frustrated parent.
'When they don't immediately respond to something we've asked, our natural inclination is to go faster,' the narrator adds. 'We repeat what we've asked even quicker than before.'
'As a result, the child has even less time to compute all this new information and becomes pretty much overwhelmed,' the narrator says, adding that children often respond with freezing, crying or ignoring you.
To counter this, the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood urges parents to 'slow down.'
That might mean pausing after asking their child a question to give their brain time to process new information at their own pace, or lingering on a page when reading together.
'That's all pacing really is. Slowing down every now and then so that our speed matches their speed,' the narrator says — adding that this often creates more 'positive interactions and moments of connection.'
In a news release published on the Centre for Early Childhood's website, Middleton described early childhood as a 'golden opportunity to build strong foundations for future life health and happiness.'
She added that the films 'showcase how adults can create nurturing, loving interactions with children, helping to foster social and emotional development' in the child's earliest years.
The Princess of Wales hopes the videos 'transform our societies' and help raise a 'younger generation better equipped to face the future.'
Middleton, who shares three kids — Prince George, 12; Princess Charlotte, 10; and Prince Louis, 7 — with husband Prince William, launched the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood in 2021.
The videos build on her Shaping Us Framework, which was created by the Centre in 2023, per the Royal Foundation's official website.
According to the news release, Middleton was 'closely involved' in the making of the films.
Other videos teach parents how to grow an emotionally healthy brain, how to notice and navigate feelings, how to manage big feelings together and how to encourage back and forth interactions with kids.
'These core social and emotional skills are essential in forming healthy relationships and are fundamental building blocks that can carry us through life,' Middleton said in the release.

Should 'New Heights' YouTube glitch concern NFL ahead of Chiefs-Chargers Week 1 game?

Taylor Swift's appearance on the "New Heights" podcast led to more than 1 million concurrent viewers on YouTube. The video feed on the platform abruptly ended about one hour and 45 minutes into the stream, which left many confused, since the show had a timestamp of more than two hours. The issue was resolved, but with the NFL and YouTube streaming the Week 1 game in Brazil between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5, it begged the question: should the NFL be concerned about YouTube's capability to stream a game to a worldwide audience that will command far more than one million viewers at once? It's not an unfamiliar situation for the league. Last season, as the first-ever NFL games aired live on Netflix set for Christmas Day approached, the streaming service also faced questions about the streaming capabilities in the wake of the issues viewers experienced during the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight. Netflix had roughly one month to figure out the issues and largely aced the test, with hardly any complaints throughout the two games (and a Beyoncé live halftime performance). YouTube does provide the NFL Sunday Ticket Package and many people watch the league through YouTubeTV. But those are premium, subscription-based services with a number of viewers the company – owned by Google – is now accustomed to. (The tech issues for Sunday Ticket during the 2023 season certainly irked fans.) The scale of the Chiefs-Chargers game will exponentially increase the viewership numbers compared to those products, especially since the game is free to watch. A spokeswoman from Google confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that it was not a YouTube issue that led to the glitch. After the calamities of the Paul-Tyson fight, Netflix addressed its issues in connecting its backup servers – utilized to account for the heightened traffic on the platform – with the countless internet service providers (ISPs) throughout the world. Worth noting is that millions of people will be using YouTube simultaneously not for the purposes of watching the AFC West matchup, which could also strain streaming capacity. The NFL would not have handed out exclusive rights to YouTube – financial terms have not been disclosed but its almost certainly in the nine-figure range after NBCUniversal paid more than $100 million to air the first-ever game in Brazil in 2024 on Peacock – if the league didn't think the company could pull it off without issue. Ultimately, YouTube corrected the "New Heights" issue and fans had their "Tayvis" moment. But come Week 1, the company won't have that leeway.

Kate Middleton Interrupts Summer Holiday to Share Surprise Video on Instagram

Summertime and the living especially if you're a royal. It's common knowledge that everyone from King Charles to Kate Middleton and Prince William log off for August, pausing most of their engagements to hole up in royal residences ranging from Balmoral to Anmer Hall. But that's why it was such a surprise to see Kate interrupt her vacation to share a personal new video on Instagram that celebrates the joys of summer. It was part of her 'Mother Nature' series, where, via voiceover, the Princess of Wales speaks to the numerous benefits of the changing seasons and their impact on our mental health. 'Summer is a season for abundance. Just as the flowers bloom and the fruits ripen, we too are reminded of our own potential for growth,' Kate narrates as a montage of sweeping landscapes and buzzing bumblebees plays. She continues on, reminding others of the magic of this particular season: 'It is the time to ignite our inner fire and explore our own creativity, passions, and dreams. As we bask in the sunlit hours, friends and families come together: playing, connecting, being present—embracing the joy to be found in even the most fleeting of moments and shared experiences.'This is the second video to drop in her ongoing series—the first, which was a tribute to spring, came out in mid-March. For her latest, Kate adds a personal caption to the clip, evident by the fact that she signs it with her initial. It reads, 'Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. It has never been more important to appreciate the value of one another, and of Mother Nature. Here's to Summer. C.' It's hard not to immediately visualize the Wales's own summer plans. Kate has long been clear about her affinity for nature and talked openly on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast in early 2020 about how she's happiest when spending time of her role raising her kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, she shared on the show: 'That's what I would want them to remember, those moments with me as a mother, but also the family going to the beach, getting soaking wet, filling our boots full of water, those are what I would want them to remember. Not a stressful household where you're trying to do everything and not really succeeding at one thing.' Is this what their summer break in Norfolk looks like? It would seem so. As summer winds down, all we can say is #goals. Princess Beatrice Channels Kate Middleton in Latest Look (& It's Perfect for Fall) Solve the daily Crossword

Nintendo's popular new ‘Mario Kart' cow draws a protest letter from PETA

Geek Life: Fun stories, memes, humor and other random items at the intersection of tech, science, business and culture. SEE MORE Cow, a breakout star in the new 'Mario Kart World' video game, wears a nose ring that is viewed as a painful accessory by the animal rights group PETA. (Screenshot via Nintendo on YouTube) The moos turned to boos over the depiction of a popular new video game cow character. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is protesting the design of Cow, a scooter-riding farm animal in the new 'Mario Kart World' because the character wears a nose ring. 'Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths,' PETA said in a letter (in full below) Thursday to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa. Nintendo of America is headquartered in Redmond, Wash. The game launched exclusively on the new Nintendo Switch 2 game console, which released in June to much fanfare. And Cow has become a breakout star, as The New York Times reported in July, with videos on social media showcasing the bovine's popularity. PETA is less enthralled — at least when it comes to the nose ring. The organization is calling for Nintendo to redesign Cow's look, so it can 'race freely — without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines.' Read PETA's letter to Nintendo, and watch a trailer for 'Mario Kart World' below: Dear Mr. Furukawa: Greetings! I'm writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA entities have more than 10 million members and supporters globally. We herd there's a new star in Mario Kart World: Cow! She is already winning hearts everywhere—including ours. But one detail has us hitting the brakes: The brass ring in Cow's nose. Would you please show empathy towards bovines and remove the nose ring? Here's why this is so important: Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths. These brass rings are crudely stabbed through the sensitive septum of cows and bulls, which can cause lasting pain and discomfort. The dairy industry will also clip spiked nose rings on baby cows so that the comforting act of nursing from their mother causes her pain and the baby is rejected and kicked away. To control bulls, a chain might be fastened from the nose ring to the bull's horn for even more pain-driven control. The brass ring in Cow's nose glosses over real world violence and cruelty to animals. That's why we're asking you to give this beloved bovine a small but meaningful upgrade: Remove the nose ring and let Cow race freely—without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines. Every animal is someone. So leave the rings to Sonic and let Cow breathe free!
