I Heard Captain America: Brave New World Was Bad. I Finally Watched It, And It Became One Of My Favorite Recent MCU Movies

For a variety of different reasons, I was not able to catch Captain America: Brave New World in theaters, which is rare for me with Marvel movies. Though I didn't skip out on the 2025 movie because of the unfavorable critical response (CinemaBlend gave it two out of five stars in our official review), I admit there weren't a lot of people singing the film's praises. I was led to believe that this wasn't one of the best Marvel movies, but instead something bad, messy, and unfortunate. While one of those things may be true, I have to say that this wasn't a bad or unfortunate movie. Quite the contrary…
I finally got around to watching Captain America: Brave New World, and it quickly became one of my favorite recent MCU movies. Sure, it didn't have a top-tier Marvel story, it was messy at times, and it felt like a continuation of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but it was a whole lot of fun and was much better than I expected. Let me explain…
I will admit that Brave New World is messy at times – one of my colleagues previously pointed out issues with the Serpent Society, but unlike a lot of other Marvel movies from the past five or so years, the movie never dragged or wore out its welcome. One of the shorter MCU titles (two minutes shy of two hours, including the post-credits stuff), I was along with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and President Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross (Harrison Ford) from start to finish, and the story never lost my attention.
Whether it was digging deep into conspiracies involving unsuspecting people (like Carl Lumbly's super soldier Isaiah Bradley) being controlled like winter soldiers to pull of some crazy stuff, or focusing on Cap kicking all kinds of butt, I was vibing with the movie the whole way through.
I came into this film expecting some great action set pieces, and the movie more than delivered in this category. With multiple scenes where the new Cap takes on small groups of armed henchmen or soldiers, an explosive run-in between the United States and Japan over the celestial remains from The Eternals that sees Sam Wilson save the day just before a World War III destroys the planet, or the assassination attempt at the White House, there was so much to love here.
But, the sequence that I dug the most, one that was featured heavily in all the trailers, was the fight between Captain America and Red Hulk in Washington, D.C. Without giving anything away to those who are even later than me getting to this movie, this massive and highly destructive battle is one of the coolest one-on-one fights I've seen in the MCU since Iron Man and Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron. We've got Cap flying, Red Hulk destroying everything in his path, and cherry blossoms all over the nation's capital. I'm here for all of it…
Again, I'm not going to give anything away, but I have to point out that things aren't as they seem in Brave New World. As teased shortly before the film's February 2025 release, there's more to the villain side of things than was let on, resulting in a vast conspiracy that entangles pretty much everyone introduced. This aspect of the movie makes it feel right at home with the previous Captain America titles, as each of those featured some kind of conspiracy in one form or another.
I'm not saying this gets on the level of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (a top-tier MCU movie), but the balance between superhero movie and gritty conspiracy/revenge thriller makes for a fun and engaging experience. Add in all the tensions between world leaders, and I was a happy camper with this one.
I have come to terms with the fact that we'll probably never get a proper sequel to 2008's The Incredible Hulk for a variety of reasons, but Brave New World pretty much scratched that itch. I would even go so far as to say that this is essentially the sequel we never got.
With pretty much every character not named Bruce Banner showing up, the movie picked up a lot of the themes of the MCU's second feature film and expanded upon them, especially when it came to the strained relationship between President Ross and his daughter, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). Hell, even the villain's motivation stems from stuff that happened way back on the MCU timeline.
Truth be told, I would love to get a proper movie with Bruce Banner one of these days, but I'm not mad in the slightest that the latest Cap movie is also a Hulk movie (just without Mark Ruffalo's character).
Considering the late William Hurt, who played Thunderbolt Ross in every MCU movie up to this point, died in March 2022, the character had to be recast here. Although Harrison Ford is one of my favorite actors and someone I never get tired of watching, I was initially worried about him stepping in a decade and a half after Ross was first introduced.
While it did take me a few scenes to adjust to Ford's take on the character, not to mention a lack of signature mustache, I eventually came around and thoroughly enjoyed watching the Star Wars and Indiana Jones lead cause all kinds of mayhem. I have to admit that seeing Ford play a president again and be on Air Force One (albeit briefly) after all these years was also quite amusing.
So, do I think Captain America: Brave New World is the best MCU movie of the past five years? No, not really. Is it the worst? Absolutely not. The moral of the story should be: don't always write off a movie because the critics hate it, because you might be pleasantly surprised.

His dancing even played a part in him getting the job, as director Mike Flanagan revealed he saw Hiddleston grooving on a late-night show and 'it wasn't the dancing that made me say, 'That's him,' it was the joy on his face. It's that regardless of if he was nailing the steps, he was feeling and channeling this incredible happiness. I said, 'That is exactly what this movie needs,' and he's perfect in it.' The uplifting, emotional film is a stark change from what King is known for, and the same can be said for Flanagan, who has mostly worked in the horror genre. But, the filmmaker said, 'I think Steve, kind of at his heart, he's an optimistic humanist. Even in the darker stories, that's always there for him.' 'This feels more Stephen King to me than a departure, this is who he really is,' Flanagan added. 'This was a really special thing to work on together. I'm so grateful he trusted me with it and if it makes people a fraction as happy as his short story made me when I read it then we're onto something.' Flanagan also commented on releasing this film in this current climate, after initially reading the novella during the pandemic shutdown. 'It really gave me an enormous amount of hope and comfort at that time; I feel like I need that now maybe more than I did then, and I think unfortunately for us we're all going to need it, we're all going to need reminders of that,' he explained. 'So I hope as dark as things may be, people feel some of the love and optimism and the comfort that this story has in it.' The Life of Chuck hits theaters on Friday. Neckbreakker released one of 2024's most exciting metal debut albums. Now they're about to live their biggest dream

When Joakim Høholt Kaspersen co-founded Neckbreakker in 2020, aged 15, one of the Danes' dreams was to play Copenhell, his home country's premier metal festival. 'As a Danish band, that is the thing that you strive towards,' the guitarist says of the 35,000-capacity weekender. He was just 19 when that dream came true. 'We'd all been going to that festival for years before we played it,' he continues with a smile. 'It's a place where the entire metal scene unites every year, so, when we played, it was like playing a festival where half of the crowd are your friends.' Performing at one of Scandinavia's biggest festivals is just the first item on the list of colossal things these death metal upstarts have accomplished. Now aged between 18 and 22, they've already signed to Nuclear Blast and released propulsive debut album Within The Viscera in December 2024. In a 'full-circle' moment, they've also been announced as the opening act on Slayer's mega-gigs when they return to the UK in July, a fitting position considering the thrash legends were Joakim's gateway into extreme metal. 'I started listening to thrash and learned a bunch of Slayer [on guitar],' Joakim recalls. 'When I found Death's Scream Bloody Gore and to me that sounded just like Slayer but more aggressive. Before I knew it, I was listening to death metal and going to pretty much every metal show I could. I got exposed to a lot of different subgenres.' You can hear those influences on Within The Viscera, a tooth-gnashing, headbanging mix of the nastiest bits in death metal and beyond. Deathcore breakdowns and scathing lead guitar lines frequently join its melee of chainsaw-like riffs, while pummelling beatdowns are never too far away. 'I've gotten very, very much into hardcore,' Joakim says. 'But a lot of the drumming on the record was inspired by our old drummer Anton's [Bregendorf] love of rock music. His favourite drummer of all time is Dave Grohl.' Joakim formed Neckbreakker under the name 'Nakkeknaekker' in February 2020, . He admits it was hard work finding other members. 'I'm from Aarhus, which is a pretty big city,' Joakim says. 'But the other guys in the band are from smaller cities in Jutland. There just isn't a metal scene outside of the bigger cities in Denmark.' Making the search even harder was how young he was. 'When I went to shows and stuff, there weren't a lot of people my age,' he says with a shrug. 'Even the people that were, they probably didn't play any instruments themselves.' Nonetheless, Joakim did eventually gather a lineup…three weeks before COVID-19 forced shows to be cancelled for more than a year. Rather than impatiently split up, the band practiced incessantly for 18 months, holed away in their rooms perfecting their instruments. All that time writing and playing made their gigs as sharp as machetes once restrictions were lifted. 'I think it helped us because we didn't think about having to book shit or anything like that,' Joakim reflects. 'We just wrote songs and played them all day. I remember, we would have rehearsals that were 12 hours long, but we would just be playing the same four songs again and again.' Nakkeknaekker burst out of lockdown like a rabid pitbull, playing all over Denmark in 2022 before going international the following year. They dominated the New Blood stage at Bloodstock Open Air, where the crowd relentlessly moshed to their well-honed savagery. 'That was our second or third show out of Denmark and it was just incredible,' Joakim says. But while they'd enjoyed some serious momentum, the band soon realised they'd need to change things if they wanted to continue reaching international audiences. Their expansion abroad showed the band that the name Nakkeknaekker was no longer fit for purpose, with the members noticing how many people overseas struggled to pronounce it. So, they translated the moniker into English and added an extra K. The rebrand was unveiled in late 2024, when it was announced that the five-piece were the newest additions to Nuclear Blast's roster. 'There's no other label that I'd rather be on as a metal band, to be honest,' he enthuses. 'They're just amazing people. The whole team seems to really, really understand metal and understand music. You can throw any reference to anything at them and they'll know exactly what you're talking about.' Since then, exciting news from the band seems to come as frequently as the tide. Their set on the Sunday of Download will be followed one day later by a gig supporting deathcore mavens Fit For An Autopsy. Then, of course, will come the Slayer shows, taking place at Cardiff's 35,000-capacity Blackweir Fields and London's 45,000-capacity Finsbury Park – presenting possibly the biggest crowds the band have played to yet. 'Words can't describe how excited me and the guys are to get the chance to support Slayer,' he enthuses. 'It still doesn't feel quite real, but we are just honoured and grateful to be a part of such an insane lineup.' The guitarist struggles to think when asked what his band have left to achieve – granted, who could come up with an answer better than 'playing my dream festival as a teenager' or 'supporting fucking Slayer'? For now, he wants to stick the course, playing more places and climbing further up posters. 'We still want to tour the US and Australia at some point,' he says. 'We just hope everything is going to get bigger and bigger.' Within The Viscera is out now via Nuclear Blast. Neckbreakker will play Download on June 15 and London with Fit For An Autopsy on June 16. They'll support Slayer in the UK in July

Black Panther's Bigger Role in Avengers: Doomsday Teased by Letitia Wright
is set to return to as, presumably, Black Panther. The actress opened up about what it's like to step back into the MCU. Speaking to Flip Your Wig in a recent interview, Wright was asked about the upcoming role in Doomsday. While joking about the security team that keeps leaks from happening, Wright was asked about stepping into the massive ensemble movie. 'It's just an ensemble of greatness, so I was just really excited to be a part of it,' said Wright. 'I've been a part of it before but in a more smaller way. Now I have a little bit more.' The last time we saw Wright's Shuri, she was taking up the mantle of Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, following the death of Chadwick Boseman.
