Honda Civic Type R Coming To India; Volkswagen Golf GTI To Get A Rival Soon

NDTV2 days ago

Honda Cars India is likely to bring in the Civic Type R hot hatch to the country, in limited numbers, in a similar fashion to the Volkswagen Golf GTI. This comes as a surprise move from Honda in a bid to appeal to the driving enthusiasts in the country. This will be the first instance of Honda bringing the Civic Type R hot hatch to India, where we previously had the Civic sedan on sale for a few years. Yes, the Civic Type R will be expensive, but after the success of the VW Golf GTI, where all 150 units from the first batch were spoken for even before the prices were announced, Honda will have high hopes from the Civic Type R.
Performance car enthusiasts might know that the Civic Type R holds the record for being the fastest front-wheel drive production car around the Nurburgring, with a lap time of 7:44:881. The hot hatch gets a 2.0-litre VTEC turbo petrol engine that makes 325 hp at 6,500 rpm along with churning out 420 Nm of peak torque between 2,500-4,000 rpm. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox, something that purists will enjoy. The Honda Civic Type R does the 0-100 kmph sprint in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 275 kmph.
Currently, the Volkswagen Golf GTI retails for Rs. 53 lakh (ex-showroom) and we expect the prices of the Honda Civic Type R to be in the same ballpark, between Rs. 50 lakh and Rs. 60 lakh. What is yet to be seen is whether Honda will bring in the Civic Type R in the global spec or re-assess the set of features on offer, so that it could be priced more aggressively.

Car sales decline for 4th consecutive month in May

Ahmedabad: The downward trend of passenger car sales in Gujarat continued in May 2025, primarily impacted by rising vehicle prices, restrained consumer sentiment, and the ripple effects of the recent stock market crash. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to the latest data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), four-wheeler registrations fell 4% year-on-year, from 24,847 units in May 2024 to 23,843 last month, marking the fourth consecutive month of slowing sales momentum. From steep price hikes to vanishing discounts, several headwinds are keeping first-time buyers away from showrooms. "The entry-level segment has virtually disappeared. The typical first-time buyer — usually opting for a hatchback or compact — is no longer walking in. Affordability is the key issue. Incomes didn't keep pace with car prices. The cheapest entry-level model at our showroom cost Rs 3.6 lakh (ex-showroom) in 2020; today, it's Rs 4.93 lakh," said Jigar Vyas, CEO of a city-based car dealership. "Frequent price hikes and mandatory safety upgrades like six airbags pushed up entry-level costs further," he added. Even India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5.6% drop in overall domestic passenger vehicle sales in May, with its budget-friendly mini and compact models — including the Alto, WagonR, Swift, and Baleno — falling 12.6%. Dealers say the slump is largely concentrated in the mass segment, while premium and hybrid models continue to attract buyers. Rising demand for pre-owned vehicles is also denting sales of entry-level cars. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "With organised players entering the used-car space, buyers now have access to reliable, well-financed vehicles at lower costs. Many opt for a bigger pre-owned car instead of a new entry-level model at a similar price point," said Pranav Shah, chairperson of the Federation of Automobile Dealers' Associations (FADA) – Gujarat. Dealers further cited tensions between India and Pakistan as another factor behind consumer caution. "Many buyers didn't recover from market losses, and the geopolitical situation made them even more wary. Overall, spending remains very cautious," Shah added. Industry players are now pinning their hopes on Rath Yatra for car purchases. The sluggish sentiment extended to the two-wheeler segment, which grew just 1.8% in May—93,983 units sold versus 92,278 a year ago. Dealers expect rural sales to pick up in the coming months, aided by forecasts of a normal monsoon. Neglected Hubballi's TenderSURE road demands attention

Hubballi: The TenderSURE project, implemented to provide better infrastructure and enhance the city's appearance, requires immediate attention to restore its intended purpose. The 2.19-km TenderSURE road in North Karnataka's Hubballi requires immediate maintenance and oversight. Since its public opening in 2019, despite initial efforts by police and municipal authorities to maintain this Rs 35 crore infrastructure project, the road from Arts College Circle to Tolankere via Shirur Park deteriorated significantly and requires urgent attention. The situation worsened due to inadequate oversight from civic bodies and law enforcement. Vehicle parking along the roadside and commercial establishments encroaching upon pedestrian walkways have created congestion on this stretch, which extends from Arts College Circle to Tolankere via Shirur Park. Currently, pedestrians are finding it difficult to use the footpaths as shopkeepers have extended their businesses onto them. Despite having parking spaces in commercial complexes and others, motorists park their vehicles haphazardly on both sides of the road, causing traffic congestion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Local residents have expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of this flagship project. The road, which was meant to showcase modern urban infrastructure, now exhibits signs of wear and tear. The tiles on footpaths are broken in many places, and the road markings have faded considerably. Initially, during the road's inauguration, both police and civic officials collaborated to establish designated parking zones. However, the implementation of this plan was mysteriously halted. Currently, vehicles are routinely parked along the road's edges, alleged people. Umesh Dushi, a social activist, said traffic police initiated periodic drives to clear illegal parking and encroachments, but the problem resurfaces within days. The authorities need to implement a permanent solution, including regular maintenance schedules and strict enforcement of parking rules. Commissioner of HDMC, Rudresh Ghali, said a dedicated meeting with the police department would be arranged regarding the TenderSURE road. He said they would work towards clearing all obstacles from the road and strictly remove footpath encroachments. He said enforcement actions would commence shortly.
