Chaos to corridor: UP's plan for safer Banke Bihari darshan, the debate around it
Locals and regular visitors know the situation well. Toilets? Maybe a few and often in poor condition. Clean water? Mostly from small stalls. First aid? Nowhere close enough to matter in an emergency. On busy days, the narrow approach lanes become a crush, with no formal crowd management. The corridor blueprint talks about wider entry and exit points, separate lanes for darshan, rest areas for elderly pilgrims and medical stations. For a temple that attracts lakhs each year, the argument is simple. These are basics that should have been there years ago.FEAR OF LOSING CONTROL LOOMS LARGEThe pushback is led by the Sevayat Goswami community, hereditary priests who have served here for generations. Their main fear is not about amenities but about losing control over the temple's daily rituals and traditions. They also worry that the unique atmosphere, shaped over centuries, might be altered permanently.Government officials have promised that the seva-puja system will remain as it is, that sevayats will keep their roles and that anyone displaced (shopkeepers, residents) will be compensated and relocated fairly. The Supreme Court too, it seems, finds some merit in the argument presented by the state. But it doesn't seem enough to convince critics.THE KASHI MODELadvertisementThe Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi started with the same worries. In Varanasi, when the corridor plan was first made public, local groups and heritage voices worried about buildings being pulled down, the old identity being lost and the area turning too commercial. But as the work went on, older structures were repaired, some open space was created for rituals and access got easier. Now, even people who were against it at the start admit it has helped without taking away the temple's character.SOMEWHERE BETWEEN FAITH AND PRACTICALITYAs per the plan, the state government is set to acquire five acres of land around the iconic temple. But this area currently houses around 300 temples and residential buildings where people have lived for hundreds of years that will now have to be demolished. The government has contended that the corridor will help in the movement of devotees. There is also hope that proper development of the area will bring in more tourists and pilgrims.Faith will always draw crowds to Vrindavan. But the lanes outside the temple are not equipped for those numbers. And when something goes wrong, it is the devotees who pay the price. Those backing the idea say the corridor is the only way to avoid a repeat of 2022. Those against it argue that development should not come at the cost of heritage. Somewhere between the two is the middle ground: Safer, cleaner access without touching the rituals that define Banke Bihari.- EndsMust Watch

Delhi's Stray Dog Mother: Woman, Abandoned By Family, Dedicates Life To The Voiceless
Last Updated: Devi Ji has opened a small space for nearly 70 to 80 stray dogs in New Delhi, along with a few cats and parrots. The Supreme Court has recently directed officials to clear all stray dogs from the streets and move them into shelters. The decision has triggered debates among animal lovers and activists. While this order has divided opinions, the story of a kind woman from Delhi is touching people's hearts. Known as Devi Ji, she has opened a small space for nearly 70 to 80 stray dogs, along with a few cats and parrots. Despite having very little, she chooses to dedicate her life to these voiceless beings, feeding and protecting them every day. What makes her journey even more moving is her personal struggle. After losing her husband, her own children walked away and left her alone. Yet, instead of giving up, she found comfort in caring for abandoned animals. Recently, her story was shared by a popular influencer, Neetu Bisht, and it has quickly caught everyone's attention. Along with her story, a donation link and address were provided so that people can contribute in any way they wish. The influencer said, 'Her children left them after her husband passed away. Hearing this brought tears to my eyes. Meet Devi Ji, who takes care of 70–80 dogs in a small shelter. I had come to Delhi. On the way, I noticed many dogs gathered in one place. I wondered where these dogs were living. After asking around, I found out about Devi Ji, who looks after them. Along with the dogs, she also cares for cats, parrots and many other animals." Social Media Users Praise Devi Ji's Golden Heart Reacting to the post, a user wrote, 'Earlier I was scared of dogs, thinking they'd bite… but after adopting my pet, I learned they never bite unless they feel their life's in danger…Even street dogs just come close for love, not to harm. This changed my heart completely. Almost all my reels are now about these innocent souls… do check them, you'll feel the love too." Another shared, 'Thank you for sharing so much love and awareness. And I really wish to Visit her." 'Wish everyone had a heart like Devi mam and you ma'am," a comment read. Another mentioned, 'This is called peace. This woman has a golden heart." One more added, 'Influencers like you are needed." The apex Court asked the stray dogs to be placed in cages due to the rising cases of stray dog attacks on children in Delhi. Some of these incidents were severe, which pushed the court to address the matter urgently. What is the right way to fast on Janmashtami for lord Krishna and what you must avoid
Janmashtami is not merely about decorating the house or breaking a dahi handi; it is about keeping your devotion alive through fasting. Fasting today is seen as a symbolic offering of discipline and surrender to Lord Krishna, making it one of the most sacred rituals of the year. But fasting done wrong is just hunger with no meaning. What you must do while fasting on Janmashtami? First, you must wake up early, take a holy bath and wear clean clothes. Devotees traditionally wear light-coloured or yellow outfits to honour Krishna. After setting up the deity's idol or picture at home, begin your day with prayer, chanting 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.' Food-wise, go for sattvic choices – fruits, milk, curd, honey, makhana, sabudana khichdi or kheer. Drinking water, milk and fruit juices are allowed during the fast, so do not fear fainting halfway. In fact, many devotees perform a full nirjala fast, meaning no food or water at all, until midnight when Krishna is believed to have been born. Things you must avoid while fasting on Janmashtami Here is where people usually mess up. Avoid grains, rice, wheat, pulses, meat, alcohol, onion and garlic at all costs. Even tea and coffee are discouraged as they break the purity of the fast. Snacking on chips or packaged junk food just to 'get through the day' completely ruins the point of devotion. Do not spend the day scrolling social media or binge-watching shows while calling it a 'fast.' The essence is prayer, chanting, reading Bhagavad Gita and spending your day with spiritual focus. Without that, your fast is just a diet plan with zero blessings. Janmashtami 2025 The right way to fast on Janmashtami is a blend of devotion, discipline and celebration. If you follow the do's and strictly avoid the don'ts, your fast today will not just be a ritual but a divine offering to Lord Krishna. And when the clock strikes midnight, breaking the fast with prasad will feel like the sweetest blessing. FAQs on Janmashtami fasting 1. Can you drink water while fasting on Janmashtami? Yes, devotees are allowed to drink water during the fast. Many prefer to consume water, milk, or fruit juices to stay energised until the midnight puja. 2. What foods are allowed in Janmashtami fasting? Fruits, milk, curd, makhan (butter), sabudana, kuttu flour, singhara flour, and vrat-friendly snacks are allowed. Onion, garlic, grains, rice, and wheat must be avoided. 3. What is the best time to break the Janmashtami fast? The fast is broken at midnight, after the birth ceremony of Lord Krishna. Devotees usually perform aarti and bhajans first, then consume prasad before eating vrat-friendly meals. 4. Can children and elderly people keep the fast? It is not compulsory for children, elderly people, or those with health issues to observe a strict fast. They may follow a light fast with fruits and milk instead. 5. Why is fasting done on Janmashtami? Fasting is seen as an act of devotion and purification, symbolising control over desires and offering one's love and discipline to Lord Krishna. 6.
