Vaibhav Suryavanshi Drives England Crazy: ‘He's Tendulkar-Kohli Level Or Beyond'
Rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been on a roll for quite some time now. After showcasing a glimpse of his talent in the IPL 2025, the 14-year-old is currently in England as the vice-captain of the India U-19. And no wonder that he has garnered a fan following in the United Kingdom as well.
People may keep on debating about his age, but far from the noise, Suryavanshi has been doing what he is best at – scoring runs. The Bihar lad is turning heads in England with the sheer audacity of his strokeplay.
His fireworks in the IPL were just the beginning. In the ongoing U19 series in England, he's taken it up a notch. A 78-ball 143 against England U19 at Worcester has become the talking point across both camps. With 355 runs in four ODIs at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 174, including 27 sixes, Vaibhav has caused a stir far from home.
In the first Youth Test, he also picked up a couple of wickets and thus etched his name in cricket history. He became the first player to score a half-century and take a wicket in the same Youth Test match before turning 15.
The cricket fans in England are going gaga over the teenager's exploits. Daniel Peacock, an ECB analyst tracking the series, says English fans are already whispering his name alongside Tendulkar and Kohli.
'The people I've spoken to in the game – I think we all have the same feeling. We've watched and witnessed a young star in the making, something very special. I would go as far as to say he's probably the best 14-year-old in any sport that I've seen live. I think the sentiment in England is that we are watching a very special young boy playing cricket – and the expectancy is Tendulkar-Kohli-level, or even beyond," Peacock told timesofindia.com.
'People are starting to make noise about him here. Cricket fans already know who he is – even if they can't all pronounce his name. These games usually attract a few die-hards, but there's certainly been a little extra media attention (we've had the likes of BBC, The Athletic, Getty, etc.), and a lot of British-Indians have come to watch Vaibhav play in the flesh for the first time," he said.
Amid a squad full of promising names, it's Vaibhav Suryavanshi who's quietly standing out. At just 14, his performances have shown composure and maturity well beyond his age. While there's a long way to go, the early signs suggest he's a talent worth keeping an eye on in the years ahead.

Australia Announce Squads For ODI And T20I Series Against South Africa
Mitchell Owen has been given a maiden ODI call-up following an impressive run in the recent T20I series against West Indies. Big-hitting allrounder Mitchell Owen is poised to play one-day cricket for Australia after delivering an impressive international debut in the Twenty20 series sweep in the West Indies. The 23-year-old Owen was included in both white ball squads for next month's Top End series against South Africa, announced on Wednesday. Owen, a star opener for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash domestic T20 competition, scored a half-century in his first game for Australia, contributing to a 5-0 series sweep in the Caribbean. Over four games, he averaged 41.66 runs with a strike rate of 192.3, demonstrating his big-hitting prowess by hitting 12 sixes from 65 deliveries. Cricket Australia's chief selector George Bailey commented, 'As we build toward the T20 World Cup the flexibility and depth shown in the West Indies, outside of the obvious results, has been a huge positive. Mitch Owen and Matt Kuhnemann making their respective debuts and the preparation and work done by Nathan Ellis to allow him to play all five matches were highlights." Travis Head and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood return to the ODI and T20 squads after being rested for the white ball section of the Caribbean tour following Australia's 3-0 test series win. Bailey added, 'The smaller squad for a home series, along with the return of Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, see some players not part of the squad for this Top End series, but all remain in the frame moving forward." Test captain Pat Cummins is being rested for the white ball series against South Africa to prepare for the Ashes series starting in November, leaving Mitch Marsh to lead Australia in both formats. The T20 matches against the Proteas will be held in Darwin and Cairns on Aug. 10, 12, and 16, followed by ODIs in Cairns and Mackay in northern Queensland on Aug. 19, 22, and 24. Australia T20I Squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. Australia ODI Squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Lance Morris, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Nathan Lyon roasts Ben Stokes and England after handshake tantrum against India: 'Don't let them get a century'
Ahead of the fifth and final Test match of an enthralling Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, discussions have been dominated by conflicts and contentious moments between India and England. The drawn fourth Test in Manchester was perhaps the peak of this, as English captain Ben Stokes found himself at loggerheads with the Indian team and media for his behaviour and his actions. Ben Stokes finally shakes hands with Ravindra Jadeja after a contentious end to the Manchester Test.(Action Images via Reuters) While handshake-gate has become a matter of great discussion and debate online, most cricket fans seem to be on the side of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar for staying on-field to try and reach their milestones. Stokes has become a pantomime villain for many due to his and his team's comments made at Old Trafford, opening up opportunities for a laugh to be at his expense for some. One of these included a player from England's eternal rivals, as Nathan Lyon was on hand to make a smart remark that very easily broke down the antics on show and called England out for their behaviour in Manchester. 'Get them out. Don't let them get a hundred,' said Lyon straightforwardly and brutally, while speaking at a media interaction for the Big Bash League's Melbourne Renegades. Stokes, along with players such as Harry Brook and Zak Crawley amongst others, caught a lot of fire for trying gamesmanship after offering India the draw on Day 5 evening. England have been called out for their moral grandstanding on the pitch, with it being pointed out that India's batters were in the right to try and achieve their milestones. 'Don't want to watch what happens in Manchester…' Lyon also shared his two cents on the nature of the pitches being created in England, with the Old Trafford surface in particular coming under fire for seeing only 24 wickets in five full days of play. Lyon explained how more balanced wickets are crucial for the health of the sport. 'It's always been a great competition between bat and ball and that's the way Australia's produced wickets like that… That's the way cricket should be, you want to see competition between bat and ball," said Lyon. 'I think that's crucial, and all the fans, that's what they want to see, they don't really want to watch what happened over in Manchester last week.' England currently lead the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-1, but India have the chance to share honours with a win at the Oval this week.

Toronto Masters: Lorenzo Musetti Sinks James Duckworth, Holger Rune Downs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard
Italian Musetti got the better of Duckworth 7-5, 6-1 while Dane Rune pipped Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 to advance. Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune posted wins at the Toronto Masters over James Duckworth and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, respectively, to advance to the subsequent round of the event in Canada. Italian Musetti got the better of Duckworth 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 22 minutes while Dane Rune pipped Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 in a fixture that lasted an hour and 15 minutes to register the win. Musetti, a former semi-finalist at both Wimbledon and Roland Garros, decisively defeated Duckworth, advancing in 82 minutes. He broke serve for a set and 5-1 on his opponent's double fault and sealed the victory with an ace in the next game. The Italian is regaining form after losing his only grass match of the summer at Wimbledon and then losing in his Washington opener last week. His last victory was in early June during the Roland Garros quarter-finals. Musetti hit 17 winners, while Duckworth was undone by over 30 unforced errors. 'I tried to stay calm and focus on my serve," Rune said after his victory. 'There's sometimes not a lot you can do against his big serve, but I was trying as much as possible," he added. 'I had a good start to the second set. I'm very happy with the match in general. I've not served like this for a while. We've been working on small adjustments," the Dane said. 'My serving felt good and I trusted it all the way," he concluded. Rune is set to take on Frenchman Alexandre Muller in his upcoming Round of 32 fixture at the event in Canada with a place in the pre-quarters up for grabs. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
