Royal Thai Army says Cambodian army called to apologise over Chong An Ma incident

BANGKOK: Royal Thai Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree said on Wednesday (Aug 20) that he had received a phone call from a Cambodian army officer, apologising for the rogue behaviour of a Cambodian soldier who tried to disrupt a visit by Asean observers. Winthai explained that the Cambodian officer told him the soldier who caused the disruption during the Asean Interim Observation Team's visit to the Chong An Ma area in Ubon Ratchathani on Tuesday had been drunk. - Photo: The Nation/ANN On Tuesday, when the Thai side led the Asean IOT team to observe the Chong An Ma area, the Cambodian soldier confronted the team, complaining that he had not been informed in advance about the visit. Winthai said both countries had previously agreed to patrol the area unarmed. He added that when Cambodia had led foreign observers to visit the area earlier, Thai soldiers had been present quietly and did not disrupt the visit, merely complaining politely that they should have been informed in advance. Winthai concluded that since the Cambodian soldier was aggressive and very impolite, Thai soldiers had to remove him from the area during the Asean IOT team's visit. - The Nation/ANN

Cambodian soldier in landmine planting video identified as same from joint patrols

PHNOM PENH: A recent post by the Cambodian media outlet Fresh News International on Facebook claimed that Thailand had staged photos and videos of landmine planting to falsely accuse Cambodia. The post suggested that ethnic Thai Cambodians from Surin, fluent in Khmer, were dressed in Cambodian military uniforms and used equipment easily available in Thai markets. However, a Facebook page called "RTA Trend" posted a photo of a Cambodian soldier featured in both the photo and the landmine planting video, with the caption: "Trust no one standing so close! New evidence proves Thailand didn't stage it! Maly... Look here! Photos of Thai and Cambodian soldiers who once patrolled together – it's the same person in both the photo and the video!" - Photo: The Nation/ANN Additionally, the page further criticised the use of traps, stating: "Brutal and underhanded, a spike trap is a device used to capture animals or people, made from sharp wood or metal. It is set in a hole in the ground and camouflaged with wooden grids and leaves.' 'Found in the Phu Makua area, it clearly implicates Cambodia. This trap poses a significant risk to civilians, violating international humanitarian law and breaching the Geneva Conventions and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) (Protocol II).' - The Nation/ANN

Nearly two years' jail, caning for Singaporean man caught with at least 100 sexually explicit videos of children

Tan Wei Ting, 31, had pleaded guilty to one count of being in possession of child sexual abuse material. - Photo: ST file SINGAPORE: A man used a file-sharing platform to download sexually explicit videos involving children, and he did so up to twice a week. Although he would delete the content after viewing it, authorities later found at least 100 clips of such material in his possession. The prosecution said that the youngsters in the videos appeared to be under 16 years old and one of them was a victim of 'torture, cruelty or physical abuse'. Tan Wei Ting, 31, was sentenced to a year and 11 months' jail, and three strokes of the cane on Wednesday (Aug 20). The Singaporean had pleaded guilty to one count of being in possession of child sexual abuse material. Deputy Public Prosecutor Jotham Tay told the court that in either 2020 and 2021, Tan went online and found out how to obtain such content by using a certain peer-to-peer file-sharing programme. He then installed it on his computer and went on to download child pornography. The DPP said: 'The accused used (the program to download such content) about once or twice a week, queueing many pieces of such material onto the... software which would take time to complete its downloads. 'He watched (them) about once every two weeks, and would delete the material that he had watched.' Court documents did not reveal how his offence came to light. But on Feb 22, 2023, police raided his home and seized devices including the computer's central processing unit, which was found to contain the incriminating videos. Officers arrested Tan, and he was charged in court in 2025. His bail was set at S$15,000 on Aug 20, and he is expected to begin serving his sentence on Aug 25. - The Straits Times/ANN
