Anti-sacrilege bill: Punjab assembly panel seeks suggestions by Aug 31
The 'Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill 2025', proposing stricter penalties — including life imprisonment — for religious sacrilege, was referred to a select committee on July 15 for examination and to seek public opinion. The 15-member committee was formally constituted by Punjab assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on July 19 and held its first meeting on July 24.
According to a public notice on Thursday, the committee has sought suggestions from the public, religious institutions, non-govt organisations, experts, intellectuals, and various representatives of civil society regarding the bill.
Suggestions can be sent by the public in writing on WhatsApp number '8054495560' and on email IDs secy-vs-punjab@nic.in or pvs.legislation@gmail.com, or through the local MLA.
Under the bill, a person found guilty of sacrilege could face imprisonment of not less than 10 years, extending to a maximum of life imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which can go up to Rs 10 lakh. Anyone who abets such a crime will receive the same punishment.
The panel, which is headed by AAP MLA Inderbir Singh Nijjar, will submit its report within six months.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday hailed the disbursement of Rs 20,500 crore to 9.7 crore farmers under the Kisan Samman Nidhi and said it was yet another "farmer-friendly" step of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While visiting his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on Saturday, Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 52 development projects worth approximately Rs 2,183.45 crore. In a major move to support farmers, the prime minister released the 20th instalment of the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, transferring Rs 20,500 crore to the bank accounts of over 9.70 crore eligible farmers across the country at a function held in his parliamentary constituency. "Farmer-friendly Modi ji today took another step towards farmer welfare by releasing the 20th installment of the 'Kisan Samman Nidhi' from Kashi. Under this, a total amount of more than Rs 20,500 crore was transferred to over 9.7 crore farmers across the country through DBT," he wrote on X in Hindi. Additionally, Shah said, the prime minister also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated various development projects worth Rs 2,200 crore for Varanasi. He said these projects related to infrastructure, education, health, tourism and cultural heritage will play a significant role in the reconstruction of Kashi and for public welfare.

₹3,300 cr paid to Uttarakhand farmers under Kisan Samman Nidhi: CM Dhami
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday said with the release of the 20th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, an amount of more than Rs 3,300 crore has been provided to the farmers of the hilly state so far. Virtually taking part in a programme in Varanasi where Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday digitally transferred a total amount of more than Rs 20,500 crore to the accounts of 9.70 crore farmers of the country under the 20th installment of the scheme, Dhami said with this, an amount of Rs 184.25 crore was transferred to over eight lakh beneficiary farmer families of Uttarakhand. It takes the total amount paid so far under the scheme to the farmers of Uttarakhand to Rs 3,300 crore, he said. After 2014, historic steps have been taken for the welfare of farmers across the country. The prime minister is continuously working to double the income of farmers and raise their standard of living, he said. By increasing the minimum support price on major crops, the farmers are being provided a fair price for their crop. Through the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, the farmers are also being provided security cover for losses caused by natural disasters, crop diseases and pests, he said. Through the Soil Health Card scheme, by scientifically examining the soil of the fields, farmers are also being informed about the deficiency of nutrients and necessary fertilisers, which is improving both the quality of their produce and the fertility of the land. The chief minister said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi, the state government is continuously working for the upliftment and prosperity of the farmers of the state. Loans up to Rs 3 lakh are being made available to farmers in the state without interest. Up to 80 per cent subsidy is also being provided through the Farm Machinery Bank Scheme for purchasing agricultural equipment. Irrigation from canals has been made completely free in the interest of farmers. A provision of Rs 200 crore has also been made for the construction of polyhouses to increase the income of farmers. Along with providing a bonus of Rs 20 per quintal to farmers on wheat purchase, the price of sugarcane has also been increased by Rs 20 per quintal. The chief minister said that many important schemes like the new apple policy, kiwi policy, State Millet Mission and Dragon Fruit Policy have been implemented by the state government at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore. Under these policies, a subsidy of up to 80 per cent is being provided to farmers to promote horticulture.

Contractors colluded with Mumbai civic body officials: ED on Mithi desilting scam
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its probe into the Mithi River desilting scam, uncovering significant financial irregularities. Search operations were conducted across eight locations in Mumbai, revealing a network of collaboration between contractors and officials from the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC).The investigation stems from an FIR filed on May 6 at Azad Maidan Police Station, Mumbai, which accused 13 entities of causing a substantial financial loss to the BMC. Initial inquiries revealed that several contractors submitted falsified documents, including Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and No Objection Certificates (NoCs) for land use in silt gathered suggests these irregularities were orchestrated in collusion with officials from the BMC's Storm Water Drain (SWD) Department. This collaboration allegedly enabled the contractors to benefit illegally, contributing to wrongful financial losses exceeding Rs 65 crore. The ED's search operations have led to freezing assets worth over Rs 47 crore. Further examination has brought to light the misuse of official positions by BMC officials, particularly in the procurement and use of specialised machinery for desilting operations. These included Silt Pusher and Amphibious Pontoon Machines, incorporated into tenders during 2021-2022. The misconduct extended to favouring certain contractors through manipulated tender the ED conducted search operations at 18 locations on June 6 as part of this investigation. The total proceeds of crime seized or frozen in this matter now stand at approximately Rs 49.8 ED's recent search actions have also involved questioning notable figures such as actor Dino Morea and his brother, as well as targeting premises linked to several contractors and a BMC engineer.
